Lawsuits by Detransitioners Skyrocket as Transgender Movement Retreats

WASHINGTON / April 15, 2024 – The transgender movement is facing setbacks on multiple fronts (1). Last week a comprehensive review of gender identity services for youth in the United Kingdom concluded (2):

  • “The strengths and weaknesses of the evidence base on the care of children and young people are often misrepresented and overstated.”
  • Thousands of young people received life-altering treatments with “no good evidence on the long-term outcomes of interventions to manage gender-related distress.”
  • “Social justice” ideology is driving medical decision-making, and “the toxicity of the debate” has created an environment “where professionals are so afraid to openly discuss their views.”

In 2007 Boston Children’s Hospital opened the first pediatric gender clinic in the United States. The hospital boasted its Gender Multispecialty Service has “expanded our program to welcome patients from ages 3 to 25.” During the following years, trans medicine became a major money-maker, as nearly 9,000 transgender surgeries were performed annually in the United States (3) with a market value of $1.9 billion in 2021 (4).

Medical treatments for gender dysphoria typically include puberty blockers, cross-sex hormone treatments, and eventually surgery on the genitals and breasts. The Mayo Clinic claims on its website that puberty blockers “don’t cause permanent physical changes. Instead, they pause puberty.” (5)

But numerous research studies point to the opposite conclusion (6).  A recent study, for example, reveals that puberty blockers for boys cause mild to severe sex gland atrophy, resulting in long-term fertility problems (7)...

How anyone can countenance this transitioning exercise among minors totally baffles me.   We are supposed to protect our younglings.  Not experiment on them to their irreparable harm.

I'm 99% sure I understand what this means but at the same time trans ideology has become so confusing that I'm second guessing and wondering if it means girls who identify as boys then transition are not capable of being fertile.

It’s not nearly as black and white as you make it out to be. Denying gender-affirmation for minors across the board has consequences too. Suicide rates will rise. Many will suffer tremendous emotional damage.

There’s a rational middle ground (and I think most doctors are already there). Gender confirming surgery for minors is extremely rare. It’s mostly chest masculinization, which is actually more common among teenage boys.

I’d support limiting any sort of surgery for minors, but I think the risk of puberty blockers is acceptable and we need to trust the parents and doctors to make the best decision for the kid.

What you’re essentially advocating for is the government telling families which medical care they’re allowed to seek for their children.

And fwiw, very few minors are receiving gender-affirming care, be it puberty blockers or surgery. The vast majority of trans teens don’t start treatment until they’re older if at all and the rate of detransition is extremely low. Recent studies have it at 2-10%, with most of them having never started any sort of treatment. Family and social discrimination is the number one cited reason for detransitioning.

Most of this social panic is ideologically driven and not about protecting kids. It’s about forcing other people to ascribe to your ideology.

The ultimate source of there being any gender-affirming care for minors is the extremely high suicide rate among trans teens. Doctors are very afraid if they don’t treat them quickly, they will kill themselves. That’s the reality they deal with.

If you want to slow the process down, you should be focused on creating a more hospitable society for these kids to go through their own process.

when multiple studies have returned results of 50% of trans youth considering suicide, it’s not just fear, it’s reasonable concern.

and again, i can’t stress enough how few trans teens are actually receiving drugs and/or surgery. the vast majority do not.

there are 300,000 trans minors in this country. only 5% of them have taken any sort of hormones, about 1% on puberty blockers.

right wing media would have you believe that every kid who comes out as trans gets hormones within the week with little oversight. that just isn’t true.

Science around the world is showing there’s reasonable concern to restrict this process.  Keep turning a blind eye to reality there skippy

UB meant to say, "you are being sold a crisis that I do not believe exists."   UB has been directed to various reports and doesn't believe any of them.   He's a good progressive.

No, you are citing extremely isolated incidents and numbers out of context to portray the image that these things are happening all the time, everywhere. They aren't. If you cared, you'd take the time to read baseline statistics on it and not your political hack websites.

Have there been some doctors who acted too hastily or unwisely? Yes, undoubtedly, because that happens across every field of medicine. Is there an epidemic of trans teens undergoing irreversible and/or damaging medical treatment? No, absolutely not.

Can we stop pretending this is about protecting kids? It's about you thinking being trans is wrong and 1 trans kid is too many. Anything that makes being trans easier or more pleasant is to be attacked. Every possible barrier to living safely and comfortably as a trans person is to be attacked.

What the doctors and parents should be rushing their trans kids into is not drugs and surgery but mental health treatment.  Some of you are sick in the head to try and play mental gymnastics to make it okay for kids to get trans surgery or take drugs to block puberty.

No we cannot pretend this isn't about protecting kids.

Houston doctor accused of taking Texas Children's Hospital patient information on transgender care

Why, this was a year after TX outlawed transgender care of minors.   Why would someone have to be a whistleblower if the hospital was following the law?   They weren't and are now called on it.

Seattle Children's hospital does the same thing only WA has no laws restricting the mutilation of minors, so it is ok.

UB, please tell me the kinds of life altering decisions minors can properly make.    As a society, we don't allow them to drive until 16, we don't allow them to drink until 18 or 21 (age of adulthood), we don't allow them to purchase firearms, we don't allow them to vote.    Now why would we tell a person that they are not mature enough to vote but they are mature enough to say they want their breasts removed or their penis cut off or that they want puberty blockers (this is age 1-13, very mature individuals) that can cause lifelong fertility issues?    What makes sense about that to you?

You are saying that while kids arent' mature enough to drive because of their lack of decision making ability, they are mature enough to surgically alter themselves or chemically alter themselves.

You are saying that while kids cannot buy guns because they are not mature enough, they are mature enough to surgically alter themselves or chemically alter themselves.

You are saying that while kids aren't mature enough to drink, they are mature enough to surgically alter themselves or chemically alter themselves.

You are saying that while kids aren't mature enough to vote, they are mature enough to surgically alter themselves or chemically alter themselves.

That is crazy thinking bro.   CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY.   And yes, this is about protecting minors.   You are the one not protecting minors by your crazy logic.   Your position is not compassionate, it is monstrous.   There is no compassion in letting a kid fire a gun unsupervised because he wants to.   There is no compassion in allowing a kid or allowing parents of a kid to make this decision.   It is monstrous and barbaric.

I told you I agreed with you on no surgery for minors. You are not representing what is actually happening. Penises are not being cut off minors. I know that's the image that conservative activists want to put in people's heads, but it's not happening.

Surgery for minors is extremely rare. Puberty blockers are extremely rare. Hormones for minors are rare. All three are reversible.

Straight kids also occasionally get cosmetic surgery as minors, including the same surgery that makes up 99% of the surgeries on trans minors. Straight kids also take hormones for medical issues as well. They also take medication that can impact fertility long-term.

You weren't freaking out about that and I'm sure you'll defend it now. Why? Because it's not about that for you. It's about eliminating transgenderism. You think every trans kid has been groomed or is severely mentally ill and any action that validates transgenderism is wrong.

You don't care about protecting kids. You care about people not living the way you want them to.

The reason you know the hysteria about puberty blockers is BS is because they were invented decades ago for non-trans children and have been used safely for that entire time without documented substantial long-term effects.

Now, when that same medicine is given to trans kids at the same doses for the same purposes, it's "barbaric?"

@mspart didn't know this because his entire view on the issue is shaped by his ideological attitude towards transgenderism and the conservative outrage propaganda he consumes.

https://www.vice.com/en/article/epnzjk/no-one-had-a-problem-with-puberty-blockers-when-only-cis-kids-took-them

"Endocrinologists in the Netherlands were the first to study puberty blockers in trans children, and recently told the Scientific American that, out of about 1,500 teens who were treated, none experienced any major side effects. Those researchers further found, perhaps unsurprisingly, that trans and nonbinary adolescents who receive gender-affirming care have fewer suicide attempts than those who didn’t receive early care."

or maybe someone can answer this question:

if puberty blockers are so barbaric and dangerous, why do all the GOP laws have exceptions allowing them to continue to be prescribed to non-trans kids? are non-trans kids not worth protecting from this evil?

A reliable source would site the 'recent study' they are pulling information from. It could be reasoned that they are just making things up to support their position, if they do no provide the information for the readers to investigate. Am I wrong?

Is SAVE a reliable group? Please explain your answer?
