Given how accessible film is these days, imagine how successful Gable would have been in an era where he could have been cherry picking the best talent from all over the country? The numbers he put up with Iowa guys were incredible imagine if he had the recruiting advantages Cael does!

Given thread title thought you were going with Danny Mac would be too busy on Twitter and other social media to train properly and we would of never heard of Larry Owings or for that matter ever had the opportunity to watch a match on national TV or ESPN.  😉

Interesting idea.   He completely dominated college wrestling as a coach for years.   He may have done better these days but his mindset of nose to the grindstone doesn't sit as well these days with youngsters as much as having fun.   Maybe having fun is all in the attitude.   Obviously the PSU guys grind it out but they think it is fun.   Perhaps Iowa's guys think it is hard work.  Both are the top 2 teams in the nation with two different philosophies.  Cael somehow has made it work and made it work fairly quickly.   Prescient he was padawan.

Don't think that's entirely accurate.  He was drawing rasslers from many other areas of the country as well.

He would most likely be as successful again. He was a force of nature and got his wrestlers to buy into the reality that they were Champions - and they went out and proved it. Cael is the same - just different methods.

Both are great leaders who get their kids to push for excellence even if some don't quite get there on the mat.

Not sure I agree that video would have helped him recruiting wise that much. He was more looking for the type of personalities that would buy into his training methods and would run through walls for him. Can you see that in match video that much?

Agree. I can think of national champs from NY, NJ, MD, ND, SD, OH, CA, CO, and  IL over the Gable era.

I recall that story as well, although I think over the years, Gable's philosophy changed such that he realized that it was healthy for an athlete to have other interests in their lives besides wrestling, even if wrestling was to be the main focus during their prime years.

As for the internet era, one of the things about Gable was that he was very adaptable and always willing to try new things to gain an advantage.  So he would have definitely worked it to his favor.

Gable had plenty of Champions from Iowa, how about Barry Davis, Jim Zalesky, Tom Brands, Terry Brands, Royce Alger, Mark Reiland, Jeff McGinness , Mark Ironside, Jesse Whitmer, Daryl Weber, Bruce Kinseth, Lee Fullhart

No doubt. He balanced those great teams with Iowa kids and out of state talent.
