Can someone explain what a NIL would look like if you were a top 5 in your class? What would someone have to offer to get a top prospect.

A Big Ten FB coach recently said that Quality transfers (qb’s and other big time talent) for football are going for $1,000,000.  Assuming 10% of that for quality wrestlers puts them at $100,000.  That fits with the rumors that AA’s Franek and Caliendo got six figures to go to Iowa.

I think the big money is being spent on transfers, not for high school prospects.  A guy who has already AA maybe a couple times is a safer bet than a top prospect.  In most classes there seems to be a guy or 2 in the top ten high school class that doesn't really pan out.

Huh?????  Where did I say it was a 1x payment or that they get that every year???   I’m guessing there’s money to get them there and then there’s money based on how they do which helps keep them there.  Oh and paying for their schooling is probably part of that.

I’m guessing there’s some big money to lure in the elite (top 5) recruits that the OP asked about.  Maybe not as much but it can’t be that far off.   Franek was a 1x AA and he did ok. Most top five overall recruits tend to do pretty well.

Anyone know what Real Woods is driving? I will take the under on all these numbers.

This is what Google found:

"Early on, woodies were kind of custom vehicles, made either by do-it-yourselfers or by third-party customizers who would add wood panels to your car for a price. Then, in the 1930s, you started seeing a bunch of cars from the big, American car companies that came from the factory with wood panels."

He seems like a smart guy. Maybe doesn’t need those nice rims.

Be careful googling "woodies"

Is NE coach saying $1M for one year and then they are free to portal out or is it $1M for a 4 yr commitment?

Gannon Gremmel is on record as saying he declined $40k to come back, although I’m not sure if that was without a scholarship.  $100k for top 5 guys (and not just the ones that went to Iowa) seems believable to me.

As far as NIL for recruits go, it seems tOSU has the edge there but no idea how those amounts compare to the alleged amounts that transfers have gotten.

Exactly. No one knows what these numbers mean, never mind if they are accurate. Even when the numbers are disclosed people don't know what they mean. Take Shohei Otani, for example. First it was a 10 year $700 million dollar deal, but then the structure was revealed and it was counted as a 10 year $460 million NPV deal. But even that isn't correct. Their NPV calc is based on all the deferred money being paid in 10 years. But only 1/10 is paid in 10 years.

The point is never trust the headline number, never believe the rumored number, and never trust someone else to do the math for you.

That was Rhule from Nebraska I believe. He said “Make no mistake: a good quarterback in the portal costs $1 million to $1.5 million to $2 million right now."

So...it just seemed like a message to the boosters.

It wasn’t the NE coach that I read about It was Minnesota.  It’s probably both but he was referring mostly to kids transferring with one year left.

That’s just it. With NIL there are no published numbers on what is being paid by clubs/boosters.  All that’s out there is rumors.

Correct. I have it on pretty good authority that one recent top recruit had multiple $100k+ offers, ultimately selecting a school that offered in the $150k range.

What do those numbers mean? Tough to say how they were structured or what ultimately came to fruition, but there's definitely a market for top guys.

The proven commodities (transfers) likely will continue to attract higher values.

It was the Minnesota Coach that I read about.  He said it was more than just QBs that we’re getting Million dollar offers.   He seemed like he was talking about what kids are telling him they’re getting when he calls them about transferring there.

When he wants to be a blue collar everyman he drives his Chevrolegs. When he is hitting a Saturday night at all the top spots in Iowa City he has been spotted showing off the Lamborfeeties.
