I have not been able to find any confirmation of this from an NCAA source. Can anyone confirm?

I will make all the 4 th place trophies for 1 million dollars. That will save them 3 million . I will also put in a bid to do the other trophies. If the other 3 trophies are 12 million dollars I will do them for 4 million dollars.

I was sitting in the same room as Pyles was when Anthony Holman of the NCAA explained that to the coaches. There's no more fourth place trophies in sports that don't actually determine their placement by head-to-head. So track and field and basically every individual sport x 3 divisions. I'm sure the cost is more than just "making the trophy," though. It does seem a bit high, but I'm also not a trophy maker and the small ones I've ordered from places like Pittsburgh Trophy aren't exactly cheap for the "cheap" ones.

Yeah, I will take the under on that $4 large. The NCAA says they hold 90 championships in 24 sports across 3 divisions. Lets say all 90 awarded fourth without head-to-head (they didn't), that comes to $44,444 per trophy and associated costs.

Remove the obvious: swimming, track and field, gymnastics, cross country, and diving (6 sports x 2 genders x 3 divisions = 36) and you have only 54 trophies at $74k per.

Maybe the NCAA just needs better accountants.

So 1 million dollars comes out to about 19,000 per trophy . I think I will make a healthy profit.

It's almost as if someone posted earlier about it not being about the trophies...

There's gotta be more to it than just the trophy itself. Gotta be.

I get the feeling that the contract to make trophys for the NCAA is similar to a government contract where it there is no checks and balances and hammers end up costing $10K.

And no one at the NCAA is smart of enough to dig into or rebid the contract so they just cut the 4th place trophy = $1M savings = everyone in Indy pats themselves on the back.

Dumb idea. Those national trophies in a school's trophy case probably do some amount of good for recruiting, and they certainly enhance then NCAA brand overall. Also, theyve been adding sports over the years and even increasing the number of athletes in various sports who would be considered "all-americans" (another great brand/recruiting/marketing tool). Why take honors away? again, dumb.

I remember in my 20s…. Working for a fortune 100 sized company.  (I’m an engineer in IT).    A request to estimate cost for some project came across my desk and my boss was like we don’t want to do this.   Make sure the estimate is rather huge.   When I asked why… he was like didn’t you hear me when I said we didn’t want to do this project.   Eye opener.    Big institutions are loaded with politicians, bureaucrats, red tape, etc….

Whether or not this consideration is worth $4 million, I don't know, but how many awards vendors/manufacturers can handle the NCAA's awards volume? They can't just run into the local shop and ask for Little League trophies.

I'm sure they get gouged, but if there are only a few vendors who can fulfill your order, those vendors do have some leverage. It could be even worse if they have a exclusive agreement with a vendor and no one bothered to list price ranges/restrictions, i.e., a bad contract.

Either way and for whatever reason, it stinks to lose a trophy.
