Franek and Caliendo transferring in. Both middleweights. How is Iowa going to make this work?

Thought I had heard Franek was a pretty big 157lber last season, so who knows if he plans to move up?

For next year

125 - Ayala (Guessing we see Cruz to start the season)

133 - Teske/Schriever

141 - Woods (Block redshirt)

149 - Voinovich/Rathjen

157 - Franek/Siebrecht (Ferrari Redshirt)

165 - Kennedy/Caliendo

174 - Brands/Caliendo (Arnold redshirt)

184- Assad/Brands

197 - Franklin/Assad (Possibly AJ Ferrari)

285 - Cassioppi

One guy will be sitting between Kennedy/Caliendo/Brands .. unless Brands bumps up. Then either Assad/Franklin will be sitting.

The 65/74 situation will be similarly stacked for 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 as well with Arnold entering the mix.

Good problem to have IMO.

How bout this:

165: Kennedy

174: Brands

184: Caliendo

197: Assad

I think Caliendo has the Frame to bump up two classes. I also think you don’t want to move brands outta 174.

Caliendo is the best of the bunch in my opinion.  Problem is that 165 is the hardest class.   He's one of a handful of people that has beat Shane Griffith and did so as a redshirt freshman out of a mid major program and earned All American.  However this all shakes out, I would prioritize the correct placement of Caliendo above all else.

I think its official now that Caliendo is the second most valuable transfer of the offseason so far.  Mesenbrink is top because he has all four years left.  Will be fun to see these guys lock horns

I’d put Nagao at #2, as he has the higher likely point production, compared to Caliendo.

I'd have to assume Siebrecht cuts back down to 149 now to try to battle for that spot too?

This could see Iowa start a lineup with 7 transfers.  What is the most transfers a team has matted for a dual?

This looks right to me except maybe Siebricht will cut to 149 if he feels he can get that spot.

Not sure if Kobe makes that cut, but it's possible. Also unsure if Caliendo moves up. Just a projection

I am not believing a Focus will wrestle for Iowa until I see them actually take the mat for them.

Also, where does Swafford fit in there?  Does he try his hands up at 197 somehow?

"I know actually nothing.  It isn't even conjecture at this point." - me

Maybe? But Caliendo to 184 is a reach. Think he stays 165/174 most likely

Between the two of us, we need to keep pushing the narrative of Teske and Ayala switching.  I never heard it was a possibility but I think it makes a lot of sense.  Especially with Ayala being injury prone- build more mass in his upper body to help compensate for the should while bumping up to 33.

This is just idiotic lmao

I think they’re a pretty solid 3rd after adding Caliendo and Franek, but I’d still take Michigan over them for 2nd.

If they add AJ they probably pass Michigan.   And still likely only win a match or 2 against PSU…

I actually think Cornell will have a tougher tournament lineup than Michigan. Cornell has more high end scorers - Arujau/Foca/Shapiro(who looks every bit of the real deal in freestyle) probably outscore Griffith/Amine/Davison IMO. Then similar supporting casts of lower AA's + R12/R16 finishers. (Cardenas/Loew/Ramirez/Cornella) vs (DeAug/Ragusin/Cannon/Lewan)

I personally think Iowa ends up 2nd (shocker right?), but an argument for Cornell or Michigan above them isn't crazy by any means - still some unknowns with Iowa.

Possible.  Maybe there’s a bigger competition for 2nd than I thought.  Interestingly wrestlestat has Michigan #7 and Iowa #8, but #2 (Nebraska) and #8 are only separated by about 10 points.  They do already have Franek and Caliendo on Iowa, but currently have Caliendo as a backup.

Assad is in trouble?

Wrestlestat bases that off returning points only, meaning someone like Drake Ayala counts for 0 points. It's a lame assessment. Michigan has a good roster but probably a better dual team than tournament
