 “Nobody really remembers when it first began. Some coaches say it's been around forever, while others say it started to catch on only over the past 10 years. ”

Giving credit to the term “gray shirt” to Mike Grey and changing the spelling would have been a great story.

The Ivy League has this really pretentious rule based on the notion that their student-athletes should be going to college primarily for their education. Many of the ivy leaguers are arrogant enough to think that taking classes at their fancy university is better than doing so at the local community college. Cornell wrestling is out to disprove this by showing that you can go to community college first, and then seven years later graduate with the same degree.

Back in the day when I attended (and admittedly ancient times) I believe each college required each student to take a certain number of elective courses out of your college.  One could take, say, L.Pierce William's "History of Western Civilization", or maybe Carl Sagan's Astronomy class (both very intense but VERY interesting); or one could take, perhaps, Wine Tasting 101 in the Hotel School - not as difficult, but also satisfying!  It was really a personal choice.  What do you want?

I had the pleasure of taking Sagan's Astronomy course (not the grad-level exobiology course) when he received his Pulitzer Prize for "The Dragons of Eden."  Yes, he wore turtlenecks all the time.

I'm sure that each of those PSU guys whose major is listed as "RECREATION, PARK AND TOURISM MANAGEMENT" takes nothing but the most rigorous courses.

Beau Bartlett says RTC's aren't allowed to practice at the same time as the college team, and that PSU "abides by the rules."   Around 21 minutes in.  I guess the Cornell "grayshirt practice" might be separate from the RTC practice?   

Bartlett seems pretty cool though.
