On FRL the guys were discussing the Iowa lineup and I thought they were potentially overly optimistic and CP said he could see them as high as 3 and no lower than 5 on the merit of paraphrasing "The Brands always finish top 5" I simply do not agree with either of those assesments

125: Leo Deluca - TBH I don't know a ton about him, but 125 has a very solid group of AA contenders and really nobody has been able to separate themselves from the pack outside of Lilledahl. I doubt Deluca does that this year and I'm not picking him to knock off guys like Volk or Spratley to make the podium.

Prediction: R12

133: Crookham - we all know the deal here. I honestly don't expect the same Crookham this season. I suspect he will be less effective for one of two reasons. A. He's going to have to change his reckless style for preservation of health, or B. He simply isn't able to do the same things after the injuries. Regardless, given the first I could see him knocking off one of the big 4, but with what I just said I'm not picking it, but I also don't see him losing to guys in the Knox tier.

Prediction: 5th

141: Bailey - people want to talk about how well Bailey was wrestling at the end of last season, but really, he beat Davis who DNP, Olivieri who DNP, and Vombaur who DNP. He then lost to Wyatt Henson to place. I think it's at best a toss-up between him and about 12 other guys at this weight this season.

Prediction: R12

149: Block - feel free to flip this and 157 - I feel the same way about either guy at either weight. Block had a great and fortunate end to his season last year. He wrestled well to get the job done, but his best win at NCAAs was also over the #8 seed (Swiderski). His best win last year was either Swiderski or Lamer while he lost to Zargo, Roberts, and Clark. I'm happy for him that he AA'd last year but I think it's way more likely that he finishes R16 than finds himself on the podium again at 149 or 157.

Prediction: R16

157: Williams - Assuming he's on the team, I don't think he does much. He's talented and wrestles guys close, but his best win in his college career is Stiles, Lamer, or Swiderski. Williams isn't placing at 149 or 157.

Prediction: R16

165: Schubert - He's solid, but I don't seem him placing. He's going to be in a dogfight with probably 15 or so guys at 165 and the odds of making the podium are low.

Prediction: R16

174: Arnold - Very happy for him that he was able to place last year, but 174 is a much better weight class than 197. Sure, if everything goes perfect and he's able to eek out win after win then it's possible he could make the finals, but I think the odds are substantially higher than he loses in the 1/4s and then someone like Singleton, Smith, Garvin, etc. in the R12 than it is that he squeaks his way through enough matches to make the podium

Prediction: R12

184: Ferrari - I can't help but wonder how much Angelo really loves wrestling. He doesn't try to make world teams, and he does as little wrestling as possible when he is out on the mat. Angelo will continue to be in every single match, but I'm going to pick him at the bottom of the big 4 because of how little he has shown when it comes to a desire to wrestle or score points.

Prediction: 4th

197: Harvey - I don't know a ton about Harvey other than he was a notable recruit and he didn't show out during his RS year. I'll pick him to qualify but that's about it.

Prediction: NQ

285: Kueter - I don't feel like I have a great idea of who Kueter is as a 285 at this point. However, I am feeling a little bullish on him, especially if he's healthy with this field. I expect a more consistent Kueter this year and I think he continues the streak.

Prediction: 2nd

TLDR; While I think nearly everyone on Iowa's roster has a good ceiling, I think the realistic expectation for the majority of their roster is to be in a toss-up match in the R12. When it comes to each individual, if you made me choose whether I think it's more likely that they AA or DNP, I would say DNP for every weight other than 133, 184, and 285.

125: 2nd and 3rd was thrown around and do not get me wrong I am a big fan of Leo Deluca but we have 1 match in his college sample that is including u20's because he has not competed in that either and in that 1 match he beat Mack Mauger 2-0 who I think at his very best is a r12 guy this year. The prediction was based on "really big recruit" "Iowa 125" "reports he looks great in the room" and while I understand 125 is volatile when we are talking about a freshman being a high podium guy I need more than the quotes above and most notable results being losing a close one to Knox in 2023 and beating Blaze in 2022 2 months after Blaze lost to Jake Crapps.
my prediction: Ceiling 7th Floor r16

133: This is probably one one of Iowa's lock weight which is partially why I am so pessimistic about them. Crookham is incredible as evident by beating Vito twice but I think there are a lot of reasons to be concerned here. The obvious one being he has had one full season in the last 6 years going all the way back to missing his junior year of high school and a big part of his senior year. When you couple that with putting him in the toughest weight in the country from a top 5 perspective coupling that in with there now being much more familiarity with how he wants to wrestle, I think he will be in some dogfights with guys like Van dee, Andricck, Lopes, Knox.
my prediction: Ceiling 4th Floor injury or 7th

141: Nasir was wrestling much more like the guy we have come to expect towards the end of last season, he did fall short of the podium, but I liked what I saw and he has had another off season to grow a bit more into 141. Nasir is notorious for choosing neutral in the third down 1-0 and staring at his opponent so if he stops doing that he’s probably going to win 3-4 more matches than he usually would. I have been on record saying I think 141 is going to be one of the weaker weights this year if everyone goes where we are anticipating. Given that I think that Nasir has a strong chance to get back on the podium but I do not see him creeping into that top 4.
my Prediction: Ceiling 5th Floor r16

149: Ryder Block is very good and generally given the type of year he had and his age I would be super bullish on him. However this weight went from being arguably one of the weakest last year to one of the strongest and I am not entirely sure where he falls. He did have SVN on the ropes at big10’s but you cannot argue he fits into that tier 1 which is the 3 national champs + SVN so that’s 4 spots on the podium. Then you have Jaxon Joy, Seth Mendoza, Sergio Lemley, Echemendia, Frost, Buesgens, Larkin. I think Block can beat some of those guys but I also think he could lose to any of them. That makes it very hard for me to be confident that he AA’s again.
my prediction: Ceiling 7th Floor r16

157: Jordan Williams on his best day can probably go with just about anyone at this weight. I was excited about his season after a very strong summer but once again given recent circumstances we are left to wonder just how locked In he is. Fortunately, we could have some clarity on that at u23’s. Ultimately it is hard to foresee Jordan putting together enough matches in a row at nationals to be a huge contributor although I think he has all the ability to do so.
Ceiling 7th Floor Does not compete at the end of the season

165: I expect that Schubert improves his wrestling this year in an on paper much better training environment with PK and Caliendo as well as Gabe. However this weight is rather deep so to predict him confidently to do much better than round of 12 is not something I feel very strongly about. There is the element of him dropping in weight that could be good for him but I also believe 165 next year could be much deeper than 174 was this past season. Kannon webster could be going up adding another huge threat to the top that already includes PJ, Ruiz, Blaze, Lockett then you have guys like Will Denny, Bryce Hepner, Noah Ninninger, LJ Araujo, Noah Ninninger those all feel like 50/50 matches to me for Schubert.
Ceiling 5th Floor r12

174: After AA’ing up at 197 and now returning to his best weight class Gabe feels very safe to AA and I think he will and could place very highly on the podium. I am not sure I would go as far as to say I could see him wrestling on Saturday night like the flow guys did, I do not know that I feel its in his range of outcomes to beat a Minto or MM but I could certainly see a top 3 finish. We have not as of yet seen Gabe show an ability to separate himself from guys in that top 20ish range though which is always scary when you’re having 1 exchange matches potentially from round 2 on at nationals.
Ceiling 3rd Floor r12

184: Recency bias makes me want to put him as the clear 4 out of the big guys at this weight, however it cannot be forgotten that he is 2-0 against Sinclair who would probably be my pick gun to my head to win it next year. Ultimately if he can get on his offense more I think he can be the best but having to beat 2 or 3 of these guys in sudden victory is a daunting task.
Ceiling 1st floor 4th

197: I actually thought Harvey had a better redshirt year than a lot of people gave him credit for. All of his losses were competitive and while losing to Nelson and Platt is not ideal when you are expecting someone to be a big point scorer we have seen crazier jumps from a redshirt year to a first year in the lineup. I think Harvey is probably more of a guy that we see make steady year over year progress, and I am not predicting him on the podium this year but I think he will have very good moments.
Ceiling r16 floor DNQ

285: Under the assumption Doucet is not starting Keuter should be the preseason favorite, although if you think about Doucet not starting because Ross is the guy it does not take a ton of extrapolation to think he is the favorite but I digress. Keuters ceiling is a national champion but seeing him lose to any of Ross, Merrill, Mirasola 1a or 1b, Feldman, Ziola, Carroll would not surprise me and I would pick a few of them over him personally.
Ceiling 1st floor 6th

I could be overly critical and underselling some of these guys but the token of their floor being 5th with by my estimate 3 all American locks when I believe teams behind them have much higher floors and potentially even ceilings for that matter is just to me an oversight.

Great stuff! Appreciate the work!

I guess if they’re healthy and over performed at NCAAs I could possibly see 4th? Coupled with someone else having a bad tournament/a significant injury pre NCAAs.

But it sure does look like 5th could be their ceiling and maybe 7th the floor?

125 has like 5? AAs back and some other super recruits. 133 is loaded and Crookham is very injury prone. 141-149-157-165 potential but I’m not expecting big points, 157 might even be on the roster, who knows? 174 should AA, but does so little upsets can happen. 184 ditto. 197 I still think isn’t very deep so maybe a higher AA finish here than you’d expect. 285 does Keuter stay healthy? Who’s going at a few other places? I would think AA for sure, but it hasn’t seemed to come together for him yet.

Just to add-on, the results of my predictions would have them ~8th place based on an estimate of their point total versus team finishes in 2026. If Iowa finishes in the top 5 with this roster that would be very surprising to me unless we see some unexpected jumps from guys in the second half of their college careers.

I'd say Block doesn't wrestle like the Iowa guys who stagnate, he must remind the Brands of randy lewis or something, but I think he will actually keep getting better. 5th.

Joy, Echemendia, Wasilewski, Buesgens, Mendoza, Frost, Lemley, Larkin.

Block lost to Andrew Clark at B10s last season. He lost to Joseph Zargo, Drew Roberts, and twice to Ethan Stiles during the regular season. Block has never beat an AA who has placed higher than 7th. And he finishes above everyone I just mentioned?

We're talking about a guy who took 9th at B12s and then beat Eugene Harney, Austin McBurney, Michael Gioffre, Carter Young, and Casey Swiderski at NCAAs. He is currently ranked 8th and hasn't beaten anyone ranked higher than 20th in the current field.

One thing I said already about Deluca (that he was the biggest recruit in bad recruiting year on an overexposed program that doesn't recruit that well), also applies to Ludington. I feel like when I hear the name its cause "Iowa has to have something to talk about next year".

Also with Deluca and Crookham having histories of injury its hard gonna be really hard to fight off the "Iowa hurts everyone" narrative.

Deluca was/is tough as hell. Another kid that was around on some of these dual teams. He has had more injuries than any kid that I know at that age, and that is saying something.  A better bet would be: does he make it the whole year, my money says no. I think he has had two knee injuries, and two should injuries....to date.

So many teams have a ton of talent, so I’m not sure how Iowa will do. I would think that they will probably perform as they have the last couple of seasons. I do have to say that Iowa has performed very well at the Nationals these last couple of years, credit to the wrestlers and coaches.
