Some interesting tidbits:

Might have to hold your horses on penciling in Jesse Mendez going 149 next year. Tom Ryan just said in an interview with Flo that if Jesse comes back, he’ll be 141

Bouzakis “could bump to 41”

Brandon Cannon will stay 57 (I’ve said this since March)

Stiles vs Birden 65 (also have maintained this)

Paddy Gallagher got another year but “will move on.”

May not mean much but he did mention Adam Waters before Dylan Fishback.

Feldman had a “season ending injury with ten seconds left of his last match of the big ten tournament.” High ankle sprain

Cliff notes.

125 - Threw the, "self discipline" right at Bouzakis.
133 - Davino loves it and is an "ultra-competitor."
141 - Wants Mendez back. Say's he deserves a fifth year. A proponent for, "Five for Five." Mentioned Brown first if Mendez doesn't come back. Then said, Bouzakis could go 41."
149 - Shaw/Chase/Brown mentioned in that order.
157 - Cannon is staying. Said, "He thought about moving up." AND "He's big." SEE: 125, "self discipline."
165 - Stiles is moving up. Will battle it out with Birden. Mentioned Paddy getting a year back, but moving on. Complimentary.
174 - Smith. Ryan spoke highly of him. Glowingly. Put the work in all summer. SEE: "self discipline."
184 - Fishback. Mentioned Watters and that he was hurt badly at U20's.
197 - Shumate
285 - Feldman

I really think saying Bouzakis could go 141 is a sneering remark, like he was half a breath away from saying, "or maybe 149 you know, he's a strong kid".

Every mention of Bouzakis seemed, "sneering."  He openly challenged Nic's discipline and commitment..

That seems crappy to me, but I'm not close to the situation.

It was said in a demeaning way or so it seemed to me. The fact that Bouzakis hated last season doesn't matter.

Tom also said this; "I'm really good at challenging my student athletes...more than I did my children."  "Causing discomfort on someone else's child is a lot easier than your own."

Wow. And what a great way to appreciate a kid that killed himself for a season cutting to 125 for the betterment of the prigram. Lost a little respect there....

Brutal

not as brutal as the 15 minutes of bumper stickers i had to listen to to get to that part.

In my experience people who listen to televangelists all day don't have great diets.

I don’t mind some religious stuff thrown in there but he is very hard to listen to in interviews because you can tell he’s constantly trying to think of something deep or intellectual and it’s just too much. I’m sure he’s a lot different and it’s probably great in the room when he’s just talking to the guys man to man but interviews…painful.

I didn’t take the Bouzakis comments as badly as others here…again I think he was rambling. But I think it’s clear Bouzakis won’t just get a spot and I think that’s what he’s trying to stress.

I think the biggest surprise for me during the interview was mentioning Shaw first when 149 was brought up…I just haven’t seen anything to make me think he’s the guy there but I’m not in the room or seen the offseason work so maybe…

Weight loss is a tough process and people handle it differently. Just because a coach wants a kid at a given weight because it fills out the lineup is a bad reason to diminish the kid if he doesn't feel it is "right" for him.

I come from the time when two University of Lacrosse Wisconsin guys died in the same year from weight cutting (just to wrestle in a D-3 lineup, much less). Coaches should really tread very lightly when assessing how disciplined a guy is when it comes to weight loss. I truly thought the sport was past that...sadly, I guess not.

this is a very naive post.

For the betterment of the program is very much a half truth here. It was the only weight he could go if he wanted to be in the lineup and he is undoubtedly being well-compensated as an athlete at tOSU.

I agree, however, that it is a pretty harsh way to speak about your athlete. It makes you wonder how bad it may have been and how much his patience has run out after 4 years. I don't recall him talking about Paddy this way despite not living up to the expectations coming out of high school. I'm guessing there is reason to be frustrated. TR doesn't typically throw his athletes under the bus.

Other than a full ride, you think he’s getting a good chunk of NIL money? Asking, as I don’t know. I felt like it was for the betterment of the team until NCAA’s with the way he wrestled at 125. I believe he was ranked #1 at one point in the season. Just fell apart when it counted.

In my mind, Bouzakis is the prime example of commitment to a program. I’d guess other programs would throw a ton of money at him and not make him cut to 125 to start. But he’d rather be miserable (cutting weight) and be at Ohio State. Maybe I’m a different breed, but if I just did what he did with that weight cut all season, and my coach even slightly indicated that I needed to be more disciplined, I’d seriously question my loyalty.

He (Tom Ryan) did say he was hurt at NCAA's.  I also remember Bouzakis saying in an interview he got really high in wt after big tens.  I am really surprised he did not say Nic did what was best for him and the team and wrestled a great season  then at tournament wt got high and was banged up.   Bouzakis was hammer coming out of high school.  Not everyone can translate to college.  Then they recruit Davino at his wt class and Davino was better.

Interesting their true freshman year.  Mendez did a crazy wt cut to 133 and Bouzakis redshirted.  But Bouzakis beat Mendez that summer in freestyle to go to U20's.

I agree with this. I don’t think it’s direct shade to Nic. I also was surprised Shaw was first up. I figured it would be Brown

Maybe this is what he meant by discipline.
maybe he had to cut a lot more for NCAAs than usual and it caused his sub par performance.

he did get majored by the 14 seed and pinned by the 11 seed

Tell that to the families of the two wrestlers who died because of excessive weight cutting.

"I truly thought the sport was past that."    I think this is what is deemed naive. Not the seriousness of weight cutting.
