They can also have 3 over age players on the team.  This is how Beckham was trying to make the Great Britain team in 2012.  Ultimately Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy, and MIcah Richards were selected as the three over age players.  That brings up another interesting difference is that FIFA recognizes some countries that aren’t members of the IOC like England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, etc.

Despite the format differences Soccer/Football remains one of the most popular events of the Summer Olympics.

It seems like FIFA does that with the UK.

Are there any other examples outside the UK?

Wait...was Beckham trying to make the GB team or UK?  I'm guessing UK? There is a difference...

So the National Olympic Committee for the UK including England, Scotland, Wales, and all minor outlying territories is the British Olympic Association and they use Team GB (Great Britain) as their team name.  Northern Ireland is part of the UK (United Kingdom), but physically located on the island of Ireland and not the island of Great Britain.  They are a special case in the Olympics with athletes eligible to compete either for the Irish or British Olympic Association depending on the sport.

Before London and the British Olympic Association was selected to host the 2012 games no team had represented the UK, Team GB, Great Britain, England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland in soccer at the Olympics in decades.  This is because to qualify for the Olympics in Soccer European nations must place top 3 at the U21 European championships the year before.  That tournament is run by FIFA so the teams recognized by FIFA (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) compete separately and not the country recognized by the IOC, the British Olympic Association/Team GB making it impossible for Team GB to qualify.  Ireland could compete in Olympic Soccer and potentially soccer players that usually represent Northern Ireland in FIFA competition could be selected, but Ireland has not qualified for the Olympics in soccer yet.  Top 3 in Europe is a high bar for a small country like Ireland.

The 2012 Olympics presented a unique circumstance in that the host nation qualifies in soccer automatically.  So the British Olympic Association could send a team.  That team, Team GB, was the one Beckham, wanted to play for.  Team GB has not fielded a team at the Olympics since 2012 largely because of the in ability to do so under the qualifying structure that uses a FIFA competition and the nations' desire to continue to compete independently in FIFA competitions.

There are some other nations outside of the UK that are recognized by FIFA, but not the IOC.  In addition to other overseas British territories overseas territories of France and the Netherlands compete independently in FIFA.  Outside of the British Isles the only such country not recognized by the IOC to qualify for the 2026 World Cup it the Dutch Territory of Curaçao.  I think this is the first World Cup appearance for Curaçao and they probably only made it because the field was expanded to 48 teams this year.  Men's Soccer at the Summer Olympics features a much smaller field of 12 teams.

That was never a possibility because England's group didn't draw into that section of the bracket.

Also not a possibility because the US won its group.

I have tickets to three matches, this being one of them, so I've been eyeing potential matchups since the draw. There's a decent chance I get to see France/Germany.

Well damn.  Buddy was telling me the other night it was a possibility, I’m not really following but that would have been super cool.  USA playing in Philly on the 4th would still be pretty cool regardless of who against.

USA plays on July 1 in Santa Clara.  They aren't playing on the 4th.

Well damn.  I guess next best is they don’t have to play on the 5th, so they can spend the 4th celebrating with the friends and fam.

I guess the USA group is based on the west coast so all of their elimination round games will be along the west coast until quarters or semis.   I've only watched one full game on the sling select, but I've seen parts of others.   But the cost of sling select was worth it for that USA vs Aussie game.   Those Aussies are one rough bunch.   Two guys almost knocked each other out heading a ball.   It was Aussie rools football down there.

You of all people are stranger to false social media posts.  The rationale isn't always political gain it can just be attention which translates $$ on social media.  The fiction of the US playing England in Philly on July 4th is more likely to go viral and get views than reality.  If a traditional news source made such a mistake it would be embarrassing, but on social media not so much.  Many will not remember where they saw it or notice it was false when it doesn't happen as it was only presented as a possibility to begin with.
