The World Cup is kicking off in just a few days, and the Islamic Republic’s team is playing their first match against New Zealand on June 15th in LA. What do you guys have planned for them? You know, they're constantly chanting Death to America and burning the US flag.

Im glad they qualified, especially in the wake of all the distractions. Country under constant attacks and in turmoil. Props to them for staying focused. I hope they do well and I realize that very few people over there wish death to ordinary US citizens. Especially those of us that want to leave the middle east alone.

They're not Team Iran. They're Team Islamic Republic.

Their anthem isn't Iran's national anthem. It's a song praising a corrupt regime.

And that flag they're carrying isn't Iran's flag either. It's the Islamic Republic's flag, which replaced Iran's original flag after the revolution.

I remember the last World Cup where the USA handily beat Iran to get through the group stage.

As seemingly per usual…. Iran was killing its civilians over protesting stuff.   It’s seems to be a broken record that is always playing.

Some on here forget your anti American tirade that got your last account banned …. You’re a little sick with the connotation of having something  planned.    What do you specifically mean by that

Iran vs Egypt in Seattle on Gay/Transexual LGBTQ++++ Pride Day.   Yes, we are sensitive to our visiting Muslims.

They have been qualified since March of last year.  That predates the current war, the internal protests/uprising, and the previous war last June.

I went to the 1995 World Championships in Atlanta. I'll never forget how loudly the Iranian fans would cheer for Dave Schultz, and how much they hated the Brands brothers.

I was going to go to a game or two here in Seattle.   With the games I don't care about going for minimum $400 and the ones I did going for minimum $700, I decided to buy Sling Select for $20/month and will watch at home.   Too rich for my blood.   But I can't wait to hear how the Iran vs Egypt game goes on the day Seattle celebrates Pride Day.   That should be interesting.

The ones you don't care about will likely come down in price.

Not down to $40 I don't think for all the games.   I've got a ton of sick leave so I could just be sick for a month and barely dent it.  The germ of a major plan!!!

Can anyone tell me why soccer is in the Olympics?    The players couldn't care less about the Olympics.   Its the World Cup they are all about.    Same with baseball, basket ball now that the pros all play, tennis, golf.  Gimme a break.    They have much bigger events than the Olympics.   Wrestling, gymnastics, swimming, track and field don't.

Just saying.

I think men's Olympic soccer is also U23, which makes it extra absurd- if still the case.

If true, that is a tacit admission of my point.

They can also have 3 over age players on the team.  This is how Beckham was trying to make the Great Britain team in 2012.  Ultimately Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy, and MIcah Richards were selected as the three over age players.  That brings up another interesting difference is that FIFA recognizes some countries that aren’t members of the IOC like England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, etc.

Despite the format differences Soccer/Football remains one of the most popular events of the Summer Olympics.
