current rules for athletes to train at RTCs... discerning minds will notice the 250 mile rule was removed with this latest update to the rules after the shenanigans brought to light last summer with a couple of our top HS kids...

otto was "grey shirting" during the 2025 season after committing to iowa and was involved with all of the college practices during through january of 2026 before moving on...

he was not unique in doing this...

I think the legacy of the 4x champs will be hurt by this.  As 5x champs accumulate 4xers will be squeezed out of GOAT conversations.  How many people talk about 3xers that went 3 for 3 in the discussion of all time greats after we got a handful of 4xers?

I don’t think there’s going to be much of an accumulation of 5x Champions like people are thinking…

Agree.  Winning any one of the 5 titles will be at least 20% more difficult than winning 1 of 4 in the past, because each year there will be an extra class competing for the title that would have been redshirting in the past.

A similar thing could have been said when it went from 3 years to 4.  "It will be a long time until a 4x champ comes along because they will have to win as a freshman."

Eventually that happened and now there are 7. One of those, Dake, did it without a redshirt.  Two others won it as true freshman and redshirted later (Smith and Diakomihalis).  With more freshman winning this year than ever before it would seem that more freshman are ready to win today than in the past.

in 57 years, there have been 7 4X NCAA champs...

even considering the first took 35 years to happen and the other 6 have happened in the 25ish years since, it is not like there will be such a glutton of 4X champs that the accomplishment will mean nothing...

curiosity got the better of me...

the googlewebs tell me that in the first 40 years of the NCAA tourney, there were only 8 3X champs...

no legacies will be hurt by this new rule...

Freshman eligibility for sports other than basketball and football began in 1970.  Pat Smith won his fourth NCAA title in 1994.  It took 21 years, not 35.  Your point is still valid -- 21 years for the first, six in the 32 years since.  Kind of like Triple Crown winners in horse racing -- none for 30 years, then a cluster, then another long gap.

Well, I think looking at the past to see how many 5X Champs there COULD be moving forward may be a bit flawed.

Bassett probably had a good chance, but he'll miss out on his 5th year by a week or so.

Duke was SO close last year, Jax I think has a chance. And these guys are just so much better come in as Freshmen.

The floodgates won't open and you won't see 4-5 in the first 8 years, but these kids are so good now.

When the rule change to 4 years of competition from 3the nature of the rule change meant that no wrestlers that wrestled in NCAA competition that year could become a 4x champ. This change comes at a time when 3 true freshman had won NCAAs and now could become 5xers.  It also opens the possibility that Luke Lilledahl could become a 4x champ.  The rule change should add 5xers over time and also increase the rate of 4xers.  It might take 25 years, but it will water down the 4xer status similar to how the change from 3 to 4 watered down 3xer status.  It is inevitable if not immediate.

Wrestlers that won 4 or 5 titles and wrestlers with the chance to do so that already have 1 NCAA title.

From 1928 to 1967 there were 18 three time champs. Gemini is a crime against humanity.

Earl McCready, Jack van Bebber, Conrad Caldwell, Rex Peery, Ross Flood, Wayne Martin, Stanley Henson, Joe McDaniel, David Arndt, Bill Koll, Hugh Peery, Myron Roderick, Dan Hodge, Ed Peery, Larry Hayes, Gray Simons, Yojiro Uetake, Mike Caruso.

ahh ... Dick Hutton meets your time period.  Sure he wasn't a 3 for 3 but you said 28 to 67 so let's be specific and accurate to minimize the crime rate.

It's not Pat Smith that watered down the 3xer accomplishment.  Smith surpassed it.  It was all the 3 out 4s that happened post 1967 that watered it down.

Greg Johnson, Jimmy Jackson, LeRoy Kemp, Mark Churella, Ed Banach, Nate Carr, Mark Schultz, Barry Davis, Jim Zalesky, Ricky Bonomo, Carlton Haselrig, Tom Brands, TJ Jaworsky, Lincoln McIlravy, Joe Williams, Eric Guerrero, Stephen Abas, Greg Jones, Jake Rosholt, Ed Ruth, Alex Dieringer, J'den Cox, Zain Retherford, Kyle Snyder, Jason Nolf, Bo Nickel, Spencer Lee.  Many would have been 2xers if they only had 3 chances?

No one ever for any reason should have have 5 post seasons.  No one ever should be allowed to going forward.   Stop changing the rules every 5 minute….

Push our rules ball grabs the clinch 2 or 10 bronze medals per weight are dumb too

Not sure what you mean boss.

do you want past people to have 5 NCAAs.

do you want future people to have 5 NCAAs.

You may have to make a point to get a rebuttal
