Reader went into sales/management for a roofing company, he didn’t get into roofing. As I understand it from the family, bit of a joke that he wouldn’t know his way around a hammer, but sales makes more sense

Those jobs are all going to pay them way more than being an asst coach.  Can't blame them for putting themselves and their families in a better financial position.

Pretty sure the telford job was more of an understanding with the coaching staff, telling him to have something lined up by the end of the season.

... or Tom & Terry were going to personally haul his ars out of Iowa City?  :classic_ohmy:

Lol not. More like they like Bobby and wanted make sure he had something lined up. Otherwise they would have kept him forever. Had Beth not stepped in

Full of un-bias blasphemy.

Yes I had heard that telford was out a few weeks ago and the rumor was yianni was in Iowa City recently. But I didn't know how to feel about it, I knew telford was likely out, I don't know who the replacement will be

Interesting.  That does seem to give more credibility to the Yianni rumor, but don’t they also need a big guy then?

You would think so, they might just be going away from the "big guy assistant coaches" the big guys anymore are athletic enough to wrestle like the middle weights.

This was a while ago, but Marty Morgan left as Associate Head Coach at Minnesota to work with Brock Lesnar.

Marty also was pretty involved in real estate holdings when he left the UofMN, he was doing pretty well financially/already stretched thin.

Not much money in wrestling, with a few exceptions. Can’t imagine most assistants make much. All these guys do it for the love of the game, even the few doing it for big money I think don’t care about the money.

And it’s a rough game. HEW is a thing for coaches too. Can’t fault these guys for moving in another direction to provide better for themselves and their families.

I know a few wrestling coaches and wrestlers who transitioned beautifully into sales / sales management. That’s a natural fit for someone with unique hands on experience and skills to motivate others to be the best they can be.

Plus the hours and time away from family; it was one of the main reasons I got out of Athletics - wanted to be a more present dad to my own son

Jon Reader was making $156,117 at Wisconsin.

Craig Henning got screwed in the 2007 NCAA Finals.

an income level few and far between for the average college wrestler who chooses to remain in the sport.

Wrestling is hard, and so is coaching. Often times pay is not great and the hours are brutal. It’s been heavily documented that most wrestlers make great employees for a slew of reasons, many of which are tied to the lessons learned from wrestling. I totally understand these guys going elsewhere as they are probably seeing better compensation and an increase in quality of life in a lot of ways.

Makes sense to assume that most coaches will be lifers, but also there is not a ton of ability to move up to HC gigs which are few and far between. Also, constant fundraising and seeking funds I would  imagine is not what most wrestling guys want to be doing, but it is very much part of the job.

Doing the job is hard, and doing it right is even harder on any level. That being said I totally understand anyone leaving for new opportunities that often come with increases in pay, opportunities for more rapid career growth, and an overall ability to have more time for whatever they choose.

Mr Mathew’s - thanks for sharing that man. What an amazing forum this would be if we can get those who’ve been there to open up to the masses like you just did. There are 1000’s of lurkers who choose to remain that way because those who think they’re better-than market themselves in a way that  intimidates those with less experience. Do what I do. Don’t care. Don’t get intimidated. Don’t give Damn. Share your experience and share your knowledge. If Im banned again for exercising my 1st amend right to free speech so be it. Share your experience and post it PROUDLY. These guys are done. They’re still providing incredible knowledge but that’s all they’re good for. They no longer matter AT THE TABLE and they know it. Their most prized fans are one another. Trust me on this.

Rassling- I am nobody, just sharing my two cents on the topic. I often default to the statement that wrestling is hard, because it is in all facets, coaching obviously lumped in there as well. I avidly follow wrestling and coach as well. I know all the time the job takes and don’t fault anyone for getting out and trying to do some other things. Personally, I have a unique situation bc my own kid, does not attend my school so I miss a ton of his stuff. He’ll be off at college after next year and I’m sure I’ll want to go watch that more, I’d hope if I moved in people would be ok, with that. But back to my initial statement I’m nobody, not a reader or a Telford.
