Idle offseason boredom talk: if the finals were re-wrestled this weekend, which results would flip?

At 141, no disrespect to Vega, kid is amazing, but I think Mendez wins in a rematch. He's just too good to lose twice. Stieber would have him drill with a life-sized gummy bear and Mendez would figure it out.

Jax imo over-respected Davino but would win by a bigger margin if he'd let it fly in a rematch. SVN-Valencia is the one I'd like to see the most and I have no idea how it would play out. I was a little surprised that WS predicts Bastida over Trumble after last weekend.

I'd put the O/U at around 3 different outcomes:
125 - Lilledahl over AMG, probably another boring match
133 - Jax majors Davino
141 - Mendez beast mode over Vega
149 - I think SVN could wrestle a better match and run up the score after getting a feel for Valencia, but I still like Aden's chances
157 - Whoever gets the first takedown wins
165 - MM wins with a broken arm after Cal puts him in a Kimura and is DQed
174 - Probably Haines in another close but boring match
184 - Zzzz...
197 - Barr by dec
285 - WrestleStat seems to think Bastida would beat Trumble 6-5? Idk

Wonder how much Vegas weighs today?  What’s the first thing he ate after championship?

If SVN jams two plugs up his nose 30s before the start of the match, he wins, IMO.

Any stoppage in action favored Valencia and harmed SVN. Unfortunately for SVN, he couldn't stop bleeding.

125- LL still. Same ugly match

133- Jax again, by a little more

141- Mendez, I agree I don’t think Vega winning would happen twice

149- SVN, he’s more aggressive and they prophylactically fill his nose with super glue

157- Who cares, can we re-wrestle the semi?? So the guy who shoulda woulda coulda won actually wins this time

165- MM, you could wrestle this 9000 times and the result never changes

174- Levi but he scores a TD or 2

184- McEnelly in another close snooze fest

197- Barr by more

285- Trumble again

Mendez was also just too good to lose to Vega the first time, but here we are. Still don't think Mendez finds a way to get a takedown. So he'd have to win in TBs

Maybe, but how? What's the strategy in this fantasy match?

One note: Mendez forced Vega out in tve first minute which seemed like a good  plan .... force vega to take ill-advised shots or give up points. But, Vega managed him.

Another note: In comparing tgeir initial meetings, Eche proved more problematic for Vega than Mendez. In the second Eche match, Vega had made adjustments. It's likely he'd do the same with Mendez, no?

vega goes 3-0 against Hardy, 2-0 against Ech, 1-0 against Mendez, and 24-0 against everyone.  No takedowns allowed.  Mendez didn't sniff a point in neutral.

And multiple posts declaring Mendez would win.  If Mendez opens up like suggested in this thread, he loses worse.  He was cradled in OT and would have been decked if Vega needed more than a TD to win.

I'll go out on a limb and take Vega in the rematch.

He did not. Mendez had zero success from short offense, and both times he attacked Vega's legs he put himself in danger. In fact, if the first situation plays out in the middle of the mat, Vega wins in regulation.

Another note: folks act as if the match is over when Vega finally surrenders a takedown. It's not.

What happened the second time he wrestled Hardy?

On a serious note related to thread, I say PSU has 2 more champs if they "rewrestled"

The amount of times Penn state wrestlers lose 2 times in a row to someone is so few that other than a handful of there lower ranked guys. That it makes me jelly. Ceal corrects ever mistake in tight matches and the go psus why more often than not the second time around

Full of un-bias blasphemy.

I'm assuming you know... But it went worse for Hardy than their first dual.

I think it's obvious that Penn State only set the team record two years in a row during the greatest dynasty in college sports in decades because they are cardio merchants

People still don't realize how strong Vega is because he has a lean build. His hands are huge and his functional strength is off the charts. His balance and core strength are top notch as well. And his cardio is second to none.

The only ways to beat him are A) at his own game, or B) lightning quick duckunders + blast doubles if you can get him off balance.

The only guy that could train Mendez for Vega is unfortunately a *too old, not flexible enough, not enough cardio anymore Jaggers. I'm sure he did all he could, but the training partners for a guy like that don't exactly grow on trees.

Vega was literally winless when he allowed a takedown all this season.

This!  Exactly!  Rob a Duke would not win a rematch.   (And he lost previously when the two wrestled freestyle)

It's crazy to me when people act like someone "would not win a rematch" when they won the first time. Like obviously there was some controversy, but it was at the end of OT. If it was so clear PJ was better, it wouldn't have come down to a controversial call. There's no reason Robideau couldn't win again.

IIRC many years ago the All-Star was wrestled a week or two after NCAA finals and I think some rematches may have occurred then.  My memory is really slipping with age though.  Hopefully, someone can fill in with details and any interesting results (especially revenge matches) that may have occurred.  (I seem to remember there was one such case, but - as indicated - my memory is 💩 tty.)

^ I did some googling using the wrestlingstats.com website as it lists the All-Star Classic results from 1967 (the first one) through 2009 and each of the NCAA championship brackets.  A quick comparison of results from those two sources reveals some interesting stuff, such as:

In the 1970 NCAA finals # 1 seed Mike Grant (Ok State) beat # 3 seed Bob Ferraro (Indiana State) by a 6-1 score.  Less than two weeks later, Ferraro pinned Grant in 4:56 at the All-Star Classic.  Both matches were held in the 150-pound weight class.

At HWT in 1967, #2 seed Curley Culp won by fall over # 8 seed Nick Carollo.  Carollo made the finals by knocking off the # 1 seed Dave Porter in the semis by a score of 5-4.  Porter bounced back to take third.  A couple of weeks later at the All-Star, Porter pinned Culp in 3:38.

Vega literally wore plastics and hopped around on the moon to make weight. But only when he got taken down later.
