Yeah sure.  But you'll forever be dumb

Two of your champs won on debatable stall calls without being close to a takedown. It makes sense why you're feeling off and can't celebrate like you had hoped despite winning the team title. You thought you'd surpass 200 pts. It's okay to be bummed when Okie State stole the night. The tide has turned.

No dog in the fight; but I feel a little more sympathetic to Minto than MAM....

Granted it took him 6:30 to get on the offensive; but he did shoot about 40 times in the last half-minute and only got one stall call...

Compare that to 184 where McEnelly used a similar "Run" strategy as Haines and he got hit twice for a pt!

I would have liked to have seen a committed shot out of Haines....

There needs to be some level of consistency that is blind of the singlet the kid is wearing!

If the shoe was on the other foot; I don't think PSU gets banged twice for playing the edge....

Ex- Valencia clearly was the aggressor (10 shots to 1) and he was not awarded a stall!

So you're saying that desperation shots in the last 30 seconds should carry equal weight to controlling the handfight and moving forward for the first 6:30 of the match?

It's not Haines job to take a shot on a guy that is constantly clearing ties and retreating. Stall calls aren't a reward for being offensive, it's a punishment for evading. That is why Van Ness didn't get called for stalling, because he wasn't stalling.. Valencia was just spamming shots. That was an amazing match and if you think stalling was needed there, then idk what to tell you.

I honestly don't know how anyone can watch those matches and feel bad for Minto or McGowan.. they had 7 minutes to wrestle and chose to evade action instead. It's not like they just stood there staring at each other, one guy moved forward and in response one guy retreated rather than wrestle. It's not a bad call that cost them the match, it was the fact that they did nothing for 7 minutes.

Jordan Burroughs is not what I'd call a Penn State fan but he felt Minto was dinged correctly.

They were good calls. Inferior wrestlers are being coached to stall as much as possible in hopes of keeping it close and pulling out a last second win against otherwise better wrestlers. Seems more prevalent than in the past.

Both calls decided the match. Neither PSU wrestler was getting after it for a takedown. If this was freestyle, they would've both been hit for passivity and evened up the match. Terrible way to decide a champion.

Actually Minto and McGowan would have been the ones getting hit with passivity.

Calling stalling is good and the sport generally needs more of it. However, when you compare those finals matches to the way stalling has been called most of the time, I don't feel like Luke and Levi did quite enough to earn those calls. The right guys won of course, but I think letting them go and get it in SV would have been preferred to what ultimately amounted to a referees decision

The Stalling calls is not based on what Luke and Levi did. The Stalling calls were based on what McGowan and Minto didnt do.

Hate to say it, but we're going to see more and more low scoring matches unless stalling is called more frequently and more consistently. Refs generally seem to not want to insert themselves into matches, but defensive wrestling often pays dividends by rewarding the wrestler that didn't take the risk. Just ask Sergio Vega. The kid has great defense, but he literally waited 7+ minutes to counter a Mendez shot (couple half shots in regulation, but nothing really committed) in my opinion. Hard to blame Vega for optimizing his skillset given the rules and how matched are officiated, but it makes for some boring azz wrestling.

Said well above. Were Lilledahl and Haines ‘gifted’ the match?   Yes, kinda.

And those that wrapped and delivered the gifts were Minto and McGowan.  Whole lot of defensive wrestling with butt to edge.  Stalls were deserved.  Can’t wrestle like that and be rewarded.

All that said, a crap way to lose a bout, and a crap way to win a bout.

McGowan is good.  Now has lost to Lilledahl 2x due to stalling.  Think he will learn? I hope so.  Needs to find some confidence and trust his offense.  Looking forward to it.

Oh boy, looks like Askren thinks similarly. I'd like to see you guys argue with him, one of the greatest minds in the sport.

I don’t think he’s necessarily saying the stall calls were incorrect.  Just that it’s “wild” that it happened in 2 of their matches.

Hey genius, Askren didnt say the stall calls were bad unlike you. Its definitely wild that they won 2 titles because of a stalling point. Youre saying the stalling points were invalid which is not what Askren is saying, you really aren't very bright.

125 and 174 were decided solely on a stall call. Make these guys go get a takedown and earn it. Figures Penn State gets the call in their favor when neither of their guys did anything to earn it. But when you're the obvious team champ, you get these calls. These matches were the stinkers of the tourney, and don't bring in new fans. Fix this, NCAA.

WOW - it's difficult for me to believe that the same guy who was disqualified in his earlier match against Lilledahl for being called for stalling FIVE TIMES would stall.  Why I'm speechless to hear (and see) he was called for stalling again.  This from the same guy whose own coach called him disgraceful for the non-aggressive way he wrestled.  THIS is just difficult to fathom.

How can they get a takedown if their opponent is not engaging.  McGowan was pretty obvious.  His whole strategy was to lock fingers and prevent an attack.  Both McGowan and Minto got warnings, but still never attacked.  If you feel like the match should be decided by a takedown, why allow guys to do nothing so they get to 30 second ride outs?

Dispassionate Penn State grad and fan.

Pretty bold statement when they finished 50 points behind the team that had more champs and broke the scoring record for the third straight year.

They did have some good storylines and great wrestling though.

Excellent.  Replace dumb with unoriginal and you've pretty much got the bar scene quote from Will Hunting.

In his video Askren says he has “mixed feelings” about it

I cant believe people are trying to defend that Lilledahl stall point in particular.  It was egregious.

I agree. He wasn’t doing anything either.

I know you are just trolling but no I don’t think McGowan would have won.

Ok, so it would have ended in a tie?

No the better wrestler, Lilledahl, would have won on his own. That’s generally how it works.

Losing by 50 points and claiming the "tide has turned" is crazy
