I actually think it’s a fantastic claim by Nickal that he thinks he’d beat Taylor today. Father Time and all that but since their last match set, Taylor has lost to just Yazdani, Brooks, and Sadulaev, and won the Olympics 1x and worlds 2x, and gotten silver 1x and bronze 1x up a weight pretty recently. Whereas Nickal has beat some cans in a different sport and got roughed up in his last fight and has entered exactly zero WTT despite having multiple chances.

yeah if we were cool we wouldn't be interested in anything, or not pay attention to what we're interested to. If Nickal doesn't "air it out" soon i'm saying there is nothing we don't know and he's just posturing as if he has the moral high ground.

One of the highest-ranked uncommitted wrestlers from the Class of 2026 has committed. Coby Merrill (JW North, CA) the #7 overall recruit in the Class of 2026 has committed to Iowa State. Merrill is currently ranked second in the nation at 285 lbs. Merrill is a three-time California state finalist and an undefeated state champion in 2025. Prior to his sophomore year of high school, Merrill finished in third place in both styles at the Junior level in Fargo. The year before he was seventh in 16U freestyle and a Greco-Roman national champion. Merrill has also captured titles at California’s prestigious Doc Buchanan Invitational in each of the last two seasons. In 2024 at 220 lbs and 285 lbs in 2025. Earlier this year, Merrill competed at the U20 Open and finished sixth at 125 kgs after falling in the semifinals. Merrill is slated to compete in Fargo this week. Team California’s preliminary roster lists Merrill at 285 lbs for Junior freestyle, but he’s not listed for Greco-Roman. Surprisingly, Merrill is the first recruit from the Class of 2026 to give Kevin Dresser’s team a verbal commitment. Merrill projects as a heavyweight at the next level. That weight isn’t a pressing need for the Cyclones as they have Daniel Herrera currently as the long-term starter. Herrera qualified for nationals as a true heavyweight and is expected to redshirt as Yonger Bastida finishes his career in 2025-26. That would allow Merrill to redshirt his first year on campus before the two may overlap. But those are good problems to have and for another day. Before choosing Iowa State, Merrill took fall visits to Cornell, Princeton, and Stanford. His older brother Cody will be a redshirt freshman at Oklahoma State next year.

Willie and Basch reported it (among others) and I believe Willie said he talked to Gabe. My point about Bassett is that it's like when a guy wants to break up with his girlfriend but he's too chicken to do it himself so they gradually become argumentive and emotionally distant until the girl breaks up with him.

Didn't want to start a whole new thread just for this, so posting here: so yesterday, I'm out running in this ridiculous heat, decide to hit up a corner store for something cold. I spot this drink that says ENERGY, ZERO SUGAR, and BLUEBERRY, and am immediately like, "yeah, that sounds good" without really paying attention to the rest of the can. Only after buying it do I notice the bigass, extremely obvious Nittany Lion and Happy Valley United on the front. HVU sounded vaguely familiar, like maybe a PSU soccer club or somethign, and I didn't think too much of it at first. But when I got home I looked up the product and found out that it's a PSU NIL drink! HVU is PSU's NIL Collective and proceeds go towards the school's NIL slush fund. Ptoo! Ptoo! Next time, I'm either reading the can like a book or just sticking to water. Lesson painfully learned!!

headshuck started following Basset Recruiting Updates?

The best part about these updates is that Askren still seems like Askren. Sharp, thoughtful, smart. Sounds more or less like the Ben we know, which is great to hear.

Nickal has got to be one of the most annoying guys in recent memory to come out of NCAA wrestling... The entitlement and arrogance he speaks with on his podcasts is nauseating. He's the kind of guy that is either figuratively or literally going to get punched in the mouth in his life and hopefully is force-fed some humble pie.

I think Ronnie Perry only wrestled at States twice in high school, finishing DNP and 7th(?), and then lost to Zain in the NCAA Finals his senior year. Some other guys that come to mind are Stephen Neal, Ben Kjar, and Bernie Truax? Not 100% sure. There's also the story about how Bobby Telford was a total fish for a couple of years in hs until he stopped cutting so hard and adjusted to a healthier weight, like six weight classes up.

“There is a good-faith debate on whether the existing record supports a claim that Mamdani is a communist. However, there is ample reason to suggest that he is a Marxist. That should be a matter of significant concern, particularly as the possible head of government in the world’s greatest financial center.” Jonathan Turley https://jonathanturley.org/2025/07/02/the-end-goal-of-seizing-the-means-of-production-yup-mamdani-is-a-hardcore-marxist/

Didn’t Jaivon Jones get a medical redshirt?

It wasn't the main point he they claimed you couldn't get NIL until after high school graduation. Regarding the 250 mile rule. It's not enforced and I've heard it's going away although not sure on that. My whole point is that NLWC takes advantage of the same types of loopholes that CWC and everybody else does.

I’m not sure what his dad's trying to do, but I really hope this is his first and last video. He better not start some drama with Dabir, 'cause that'll just drag his son into unnecessary controversy. They’ve already had enough of that. Whatever he's planning, he should wrap it up fast.

He can't pay me enough to listen to him, or visit his podcast or whatever it is that he does.

don't like the bro-ese, but yeah. then again, the point is to drive traffic, and bc we are enslaved by the algorithm it will work. we're a bunch of marks.

‘One time David didn’t hold the door for me and another time he made me pay full price at his wife’s juice shop…can you believe this guy?’ *Cassar nods* ‘totally bro’
-
He didn’t say it was illegal for high schoolers to get NIL, he was mostly just claiming that getting an apartment in the area (which in this case was supposedly paid for by a booster) doesn’t satisfy the 250 mile requirement. I know it’s been stated elsewhere that those outside of 250 miles can still train there periodically (so Blaze training at NLWC wasn’t automatically illegal), but not sure exactly how much.

I'd love to hear him air out his petty grievances.

Rohn and Trenge for Lehigh in 2002 was another good 1-2 (and that's what they placed that year). Of their 9 combined wins at that tournament, 7 were pins.
