I hope that the result of the crapstorm that is coming if they stick with the tariffs (economic retraction and mass layoffs) is less name-calling, tribalism, and a return to sensible economic policy. That's what happened in 08 and 09 with the measures put in place during the GFC. There is a very simple fix to this. Congress should be the body that determines whether to impose (or remove) tariffs. Not the whims of the executive branch.

We aren't going to make things when mass layoffs hit and nobody has money to buy anything. The way you apply tariffs is to target them at specific industries or countries. Are we forgetting what things were like in 08/09?

You don't increase domestic manufacturing by shutting down international trade entirely. Nobody is going to invest in building factories to make something, when you can't sell it internationally and the economy is in a recession because everyone is getting laid off. The way this should have been done is to target some specific areas where domestic manufacturing is critical (like chips, cars, etc), and then tariff those specific products. Even better, make deals with countries like Canada and within the EU that won't undercut your cost of labor but you actually want to sell to. What's doing on right now is not going to work. The market is down almost 20% because people realize that companies are going to contract, lay off tons of people, and then the economy as a whole will tank.

In a few years you can buy that car a beer. The price of cars going up probably won't have that huge of an impact on people since a car is something most people buy infrequently, and there is no real need to get a new car unless your old one is a piece of crap. However, the impact will be on car dealerships and domestic employees of the car companies that get laid off. I have to imagine the vast majority of these people are Trump supporters. In the long term, tariffs would bring jobs to the car manufacturing sector at the expense of higher prices and lower quality for consumers. I'm not sure how the employees who get laid off or can't sell cars while the supply chains are being redone will feel about it though.

It's not that simple. The SEC schools have been paying their players for years even though it was against NCAA rules. It's stupid to throw an accusation at an individual wrestler unless it is a Brock Lesnar type situation. Somebody we don't suspect at all could be on PEDs. Messenbrink only had 3 matches total that weren't bonus point wins. 2 of those three were against #2 guy, who he had teched earlier in the year. Hendrickson had a great season too with many pins, but we have always seen heavyweights be more likely to win by pin, especially against weaker competitors. Like I said, I think it should be Starocci because of the 5 NCAA titles. I simply said MM had a more dominant season than Hendrickson, who also had an extremely impressive season.
