Yeah it’s a lot of hassle to get one stud wrestler in Angelo. The dad has this weird “I’m an alpha male loon at me” vibe. If he wasn’t a wrestling dad he’d probably be protesting women’s rights or selling energy drinks lol

Askren has an ego the size of Missouri. No way he coaches under somebody. He'll even struggle with university administration, I guarantee it. Camps and stuff work for him because he's the boss. Was going to suggest Oregon State but y'all beat me to it lol
-
Exactly. Tough cut, content with his natural abilities, who knows. Though with all the shakeup at OU I bet he could go up a weight if he wanted. 184 isn't a strong weight for OU.

I wonder what happened with Tate Picklo. Tons of potential out of high school, cracked the D1 top #15 right away, has a funky style that's fun to watch and his limbs are made of rubber. But he didn't really progress and his body language on the mat was pretty poor. Williams McDougal will be a good rematch... last meeting Williams did a stupid back flip that could have broken his neck.

I'm not about banning people but Jimmy's return should have stipulations. Such as only starting 1-2 threads a week. Recently the guy posted something like 8-10 threads in 7 days, some not even about wrestling, and most about how great PSU is. It's annoying. Even if he posted nonstop praise about my team that often I'd be annoyed.
-
Exactly. AJ has quadrupled down on showing everyone he's a problem child, and most people don't want that around.
-
That's exactly the point, right? Humans are sort of programmed to want to believe in something, yet there's countless ways this belief takes place. So maybe we should just accept everyone's particular beliefs in divinity-or-not and move on. There are much better things to fight about, like a Dual Championship or whether Travis Kelce was being rude to his coach.

Hendselman #16 rankings by Wrestlestat 2 pm central time, ESPN+ If the Cowboys win Sunday, OSU’s 2024 class would become the sixth straight set of seniors to have never lost to OU in their careers and it would be the 18th Bedlam win in a row. Regardless of rankings it's always a great dual - spicy competition and packed house!

Wait until you guys hear that God is more of a life force than some mystical being in the sky, and that Jesus wanted us to emulate him rather than worship him. We might just keep this thread going indefinitely!

Amen Most divisiveness happens on your phone/computer too. Set the screen down and it’s amazing how alike we are.

Haha he does! Great way to describe it. I'm really excited to see what he turns into if he commits to the lifestyle, gets comfortable with the weight, gets familiar with how the competition reacts to his shots, etc. I get the feeling he's just never had to think about a lot of that stuff before and now there's a whole new level of understanding and analysis that he's been doing on autopilot with great success. Crazy potential with that guy!

Yeah it's pretty wild! Wicked fast

It's a combination of factors. Several new faces in the lineup, a couple of veterans growing into their weights, Coleman as coach (if you watch the duals he's got a notepad and is making notes), Caldwell promoted to coach, RTC and NIL started rolling this past offseason, changes to training methods, new facilities, two sets of warring brothers (Ferraris and Mastros) gone. Personally I'm just happy to see them doing well again - top five is definitely where the Cowboys like to be. 3rd in 2019, 2020 lost to covid, 3rd in 2021, and then a couple of rebuilding/ohnowebetterchangesomethingsquick years in 2022 and 2023. People were mad about the money but now they're mad about the timeline: it appears that PSU was doing the RTC and fundraising years before it was actually allowed by the NCAA. So teams like the Cowboys/Hawkeyes/everybody else were still leaning on the allotted 9.9 scholarships per season while PSU was using millions of private dollars to bring in elite college & HS wrestlers, train them with Olympians, and promise them jobs after graduation. The NCAA did eventually change their rules to allow all teams to do this, but PSU essentially got a several year head start and then also avoided sanctions when their actions came to light. This is just what I've gathered as a casual and interested fan of D1 wrestling, not trying to drum up rage or anything.
-
Or a failpin? Tons of raw talent, won several OK state titles without cutting weight or lifting much. If he applies himself to the D1 lifestyle he could really turn some heads... but if good enough stays good enough for him, he'll stay good enough.

Cade Devos #5 184 Plott v. Berge #7 197 nSurber v. Tanner Sloan #4 285 Doucet v. Rasmussen #60 Yes I used “OSU” just like the Lord intended. 6 pm central, ESPN+. Both teams undefeated in conference duals and riding momentum. On paper the Cowboys take it but it’s SDSUs best season to date. Williams and Thompson have good opportunities to prove themselves and climb the rankings.

As an outsider, I have to think that the Brands’ bad attitudes and constant “us vs them” demeanors wear down their athletes. It’s probably hard to stay motivated for 4-6 years when working for guys who’s emotional range seems to start and stop at “f*** you”. Again I don’t know, just my observations on a less tangible part of leading/coaching.

Is this the year Oklahoma State steps up at The Big Dance?
alex1fly replied to AgaveMaria's topic in College Wrestling
Hopefully so. OSU will need him if they want to make top 5. Other options at 197 are a backup and a stud who's in redshirt. Yep exactly. -
Me too! I don't know the history or hurdles but it makes sense from a fan, wrestler, and "good for the sport" perspective. Have to think the broadcasting network would make good money, too. I picture all of college wrestling fandom watching each dual and viewership blowing NCAA tourney numbers out of the water.

Lol I love "PTFD". Don't forget Mastro who never figured out how to shoot or get off bottom and then quit mid season to run a zoo. PTFMD might be a little wordy though lol This Cowboy fan is hopeflu though! Squad is looking real good. Winning tight matches, getting bonus points, gassing out their opponents. If that continues then they certainly could place 2nd. I'd be happy with top five, for sure. Or even just seeing them perform to the best of their abilities. The last two years have been a blur of "what are they doing out there?" with a few bright spots in Fix and Plott. If I recall correctly OSU did place 3rd in 2021 and placed 2nd in 2019 or 2018. So it hasn't been THAT long since they've done well at NCAAs. But two years is a long time to be down in Cowboy Country. -
For the sake of discussion, who are the light schedulers? And what's the minimum # of matches required to go to NCAAs?
-
I'd be curious what the wrestlers think about it. How many prefer resting as much as possible, ducking hard matches, and only caring about the 3-5 days of wrestling in March (conference and NCAA tourneys)? Versus how many just want to go and compete against anybody over several months, prefer the dual atmosphere, etc?
-
From a fan perspective, duals are more fun for more people. It's a regular event on a weekend or an evening. Couple hours and you're done. Hype, excitement, momentum. Anyone can enjoy themselves at a dual, from serious fans to newbies to aspiring and former wrestlers. Less risk of injury to the athletes too. Tournaments are more of a grind and better suited for parents and die-hards. It's hard to follow all the matches/brackets and you often have to take time off of work to attend or even to view online.

Exactly. Thanks! Glad to see I'm not the only one that was scratching their head at that. -

I like that stuff too. Something else Coleman did that stood out to me... during 174 SV period, Thompson got a takedown and refs awarded the points but didn't stop the match. Cowboy bench is losing their minds, Coleman included. But then at like 10 seconds left, Coleman just shrugs and sits back down. That's some finesse - knowing when to fight for your team and when to cool it down because you know it doesn't matter. That kind of finesse has been missing from the Cowboy bench for a while now and it's nice to have it back. Another odd Missouri coaching choice I noticed. I forget which match but the Mizzou guy was up like 5-2 with a few seconds left in the 3rd. Mizzou guy gets a questionable TD that doesn't get called but Mizzou coaches lose their minds and pressure the refs to review the no-call even though Mizzou has no brick left. But the thing is, TD or not the Mizzou guy is winning by a regular decision and the dual is already locked up for OSU. Not trying to call anybody out, it just seemed like a weird thing to grandstand on. -

Man, we (OSU) look like a bunch of bruisers out there. Quite different look than the last couple of post-Ferrari stress syndrome years. It's so awesome to see! Missouri did have some head scratchers. No backup at 133, sent out a backup at 149, at 125 they lost their brick and their guy got two stall calls within the first two minutes, and Mauller took basically zero shots. I"m used to seeing Mauller well, maul people. And also the refs... my goodness. What are they doing out there? I've never felt more consistently confused than this season about stall calls, stalemate calls, when they award takedowns/escapes, and edge of mat violations.
