  1. I am always torn when I rate the greatest all time wrestlers for the USA - like most people I tend to put John Smith at the top and now I have him in a dead heat with JB. Still the level of greatness that Bruce displayed over a 14 year period where he dominated in this country and was able to medal in 13 of 14 years with 5 golds is amazing. At times I think he should be our #1.
  2. Actually that is usually how you get stripped of a title in combat sports - you lose to someone.
  3. There is a repeat champion if you include the 2020 Olympics which took place in 2021. Otoguro won those with Aliev Silver and Rashidov and Barang with bronze. That tournament is more indicative of the worlds best than the 2021 WC as many of the top guys did not attend that. 5 of the top 6 countries placing at the Olympics sent a different rep to the 2021 WC - the 6th Hungary did not send Musakaev or anyone else.
  4. This is what was said in the 1992 USA wrestling yearbook in the BB write up - "He enters the Olympic year after a rare non-medal performance at the 1991 World Championships, where he placed seventh. Closer Inspection shows that Baumgartner was a victim of bad breaks. In the 1st round he lost to the tough 1989 WC Ali Reza Soliemani of Iran. His other loss was to Turkey's Mahmut Demir , who poked Baumgartner in the eye to score the winning points in overtime." After that book was published prior to the 1992 Olympic trials BB went on to have some of his greatest years. He went Gold, Gold, Silver Gold, & Bronze over the next 5 years that included 2 Olympics.
  5. If Brock wrestles like he did in his Bronze medal match he can beat anyone in the NCAA this year - that was some display of defensive wrestling - well worth checking out on Flo for anyone who hasn't seen it.
  6. If MM is beating Facundo soundly in the room and the PSU coaching staff thinks he can be a contender for the National title at 165 why not start him there? He certainly looked big enough when he blow torched his way through the 163 lb JR FS bracket.
  7. I should have kept reading the thread before replying
  8. NHS67 said yep to this - I am pretty sure the answer is no - last season MM was RS at Cal Baptist - I don't think he can take another regular RS.
  9. I heard that Zach Braunagle Ill. 197 was taking an Olympic RS
  10. I think Real Woods and Joey McKenna are bad examples as I am pretty sure both had completed undergrad degrees at Stanford prior to leaving.
  11. The 118 lb. weight was eliminated in the 1998-1999 season when they added the 7 lbs. to all of the weights due to the deaths of some wrestlers that year from weight cutting. I was 118 way back in the 70s and I weigh less now than my natural walking around weight was then (138 lbs.)
  12. It has been a while since AJ has wrestled and I expect Cass will still have about 20 lbs on him (Cass mid 250s AJ 230 to 235) We will see - I hope there is film of it for the fans. AJ has to get admitted to Iowa 1st.
  13. I do not think it will be a forgone conclusion that AJF will beat Tony C out for the spot at heavyweight. If AJF is not capable or interested in making 197 anymore he will have to take the spot from big Tony on the mat.
  14. Does "their own team" mean any team at the institution they attend or only the team that they actually are a member of?
  15. From what I understand from reading the attached article he will still be considered the "defending WC" - he will be stripped of medals won after 8/6/15 t0 8/5/19 - not his 2014 world title.I believe he retired not to much after that loss.
  16. Kerk weighed in at 257 lbs at the B10 tournament - the B10, B12, tournaments had the actual weights for the Hwts listed in trackwrestling last year.
  17. Agreed as far as needing someone to replace KS at 97kg - we haven't had such a consistently great heavy guy since big Bruce was competing 25 + years ago.
  18. 57 kg - Vito A 65 Kg - Yianni 74 kg - Dake 86 Kg - DT 97 kg Snyder 125 kg - Gable If USAW is still offering the same award from the Living the Dream fund that they offered to JB in 2016 (and I think for Snyder in 2020) then a Gold in Paris could earn Gable $500K - the same would apply to Taylor - That is 10 Xs the amount Gable could have earned at this years WC. I think he is going.
  19. I am guessing you are kidding on your height projections - Someone with Dake's build would be abour 6'4" to weigh in at 213. If you want to scale up weight you need to cube the ratio of the heights to project mass.
  20. Tony Cass weighed in at 252 lbs. for the Big 10s as reported on track wrestling. I doubt he ever got below the mid 240s last season. That is still a lot less than he weighed in previous years.
  21. This is hardly fair - Tazhudinov is obviously physical but he beat both Kyle and AS with excellent technique and movement. He is 20 years old and just coming into his own - similar to B Satiev in the 1995 WCs. Boltakaev had been around quite a while and had made a sudden unexplainable leap in ability that was more physical than technique based - more akin to Ben Johnson than Buviar Satiev.
  22. The main thing he did prior to winning this WC is win the 2023 Asian Games in April - he beat Goljei of Iran in the SF which is notable - I went back and watched his SF & Final matches from that tournament and it looks like he has improved a lot in the last 6 months.
  23. Lee has a reasonably good draw considering that he should be able to win his first 3 matches without beating one of the top 10 wrestlers in the bracket. On the down side the top half of the bracket is much tougher and he will probably hit Iran's defending WC in the quarters. The lower part of his side of the bracket is the strongest 1/4 - it includes Otoguro, thre Russian, Musakaev and the Kirgizstan guy.
  24. Carr is done this year but O'Toole has two more years if he wants to use the extra one.
  25. None of the Cornell (or other Ivy) wrestlers are going to "get a free Covid year" - To get the extra year to participate you actually had to wrestle in the 2021 season. That is the year that would not count against your eligibility. As no Ivy wrestlers competed that year they will not be getting a 5th year of competition anywhere.
