You are moving the goal posts....your initial post states: "My approach to a wrestling program is that they are the least costly programs you can have. All you need is a room, a mat, and a coach who can drive a car and push a mop. Many very successful programs have that and no more. That is half a professor's salary." I ask again, in your own words and your own "approach to a wrestling program", what "very successful programs have a room, mat, a coach who can drive a car and push a mop and no more" and pay their head coach "half a professors salary." If you want to talk top end salaries of professors that are in admin, that's a different story. The average salary of professors at large schools are in that 125-150 range. BTW - Your reference to Moore's salary is when he was an assistant not head coach from, as you said, 8 years ago. Ben Stehura was the head coach.

What very successful programs have nothing but a room, mat, a coach who can drive a car and push a mop and no more? The average professor salary is in the 140k range at large universities (Iowa for example)... You can't get a head wrestling coach at a very successful program for 70k..... even assistants make more than that. Wrestling is one of the least costly programs due to the number of traveling participants, but there are many costs that go into a program.

That's not necessarily inaccurate.... the announcement was made May 14, 2008 after his freshman year had concluded and was effective immediately.

That's not what they are saying... "CSU made the difficult decision to discontinue these sport programs at the conclusion of their respective seasons this academic year as part of a strategic effort, which began in 2023, to address budgetary shortfalls across the University. Honest questions - How do you define "Manage up", why do you say that coaches regularly do a bad job ast it and why would you choose Gable, Cael, Ayers and Brands to teach this class?

The Pac-12 only gets the champion as an automatic qualifier this year due to being only 4 teams. All the rest go into the at-large selections.... so they only get 10. At the end of the day they will have 3 at 197 in the NCAAs. Lots of wrestling left for Pac12 wrestlers to earn an at large.

In 2015 when the program was dropped, it was brought back because students voted to increase their student fees to keep the sport: "After CSU announced earlier this year it planned to eliminate wrestling, students voted to increase their fees so the Vikings' wrestling program could remain The vote will add about $30 a year to the bill of a full-time student this year, before increasing to $90 in another year. Students taking fewer than 9 credit hours won't have to pay the increase, just the previous fee." The question is when did the school decide to absorb these increases for wrestling into their general budget or athletic budget, forcing the school to now drop? Was there ever a vote to take the fees back out of student fees that were raised for wrestling? I don't know what kind of followups or changes that were made through the years, but after reading a couple of CSU fan posts on social media (which may or may not be accurate), it seems there is missing information. https://www.cleveland.com/datacentral/2015/07/cleveland_state_student_fees_c_1.html https://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/2015/04/cleveland_state_wrestling_team_1.html

Yeah me too... he finished the season pretty strong last year. I expected top 12ish this year. Vasquez getting beat by EJ Parco was very surprising.... Adisson had a good win over Monteiro. I wonder who they go with down the stretch. Looks like split time with Valencia.

Ferrari will have Munoz #10, Little #5, Hopkins #31 to round out the season then Munoz and/or Little at Pac 12. We will see where he stands after these matches, but he certainly will not be battle tested like the others heading to the NCAA. Figs hasn't wrestled real great coming off injury, but he did the same last year. He lost to Spratley, Provo and Renteria in February...then went on a 10 match win streak to win it. I wouldn't pick him to win it right now, but I also wouldn't be surprised at the same time.

First coaches ranking is out... must have 8 D1 matches at the weight and 1 in the last 30 days... so some guys are not included because of that reason. The one that matters is the last one.
-
Read that it was personal reasons and that he left on good terms and that that the "door is open" to return.
-
Yeah - it is at least a start. I was glad they made it out of club status. Several schools have club teams like WSU, Eastern Washington and I think a few others. Washington produces some pretty tough kids.
-
I think he committed to 4 and enrolled at 2 - UPenn, Illinois, Oklahoma State, Iowa State
-
Negative Evergeen State College is NAIA ( Initially I stated JC) - They wrestle in the Cascade Conference - wrestled last season in the CCC championships, have wrestled a full schedule this season and scheduled for CCC championships again. Big Bend Community College - Just went 4-4 at the NJCAA national duals - This is their first year as full members of the NJCAA
-
No longer enrolled at Iowa State (a few outlets). No details yet.

WA high school wrestling has been pretty good for a while now. Not only do they not have a D1 team, they only have a couple JC wrestling programs and they are very underfunded and barely surviving. They have zero NAIA, D2 and D3 programs. With a large city like Seattle and many schools throughout the state, you would think it's a no brainer...unfortunately the colleges are not wrestling friendly. A lot of people have tried to change that, but it hasn't happened.

They have done well with recruiting the last two years and have the #8 class so far for 2026. The next couple years will be the real test of how they can develop their own guys they have recruited. They missed out on some good PNW recruits their first two years. Rademacher (OR), Whisenhunt (OR), Attao (ID), Hamblin (WA) will see the lineup again next year. Oregon HS wrestling is down right now and with their connections to California it only makes sense they recruit hard there. It's paying off as well since their 2025 and 2026 classes have some nationally ranked kids coming out of there. Utah HS wrestling has improved a lot in the last couple years, but OSU has tough competition there with Adam Hall taking over at UVU. He is a good guy and a good recruiter. I am looking forward to next year when some of our guys return, our younger guys get a little more experience.

C'mon ...he just beat the Wyoming backup by decision...is that not a reason to celebrate?

Day number # of CSUB not kicking out Aj Ferrari
Idaho replied to CowboyYe2024's topic in College Wrestling
Might have to backtrack to December … -
Yeah I agree. They had a couple trophy teams that were pretty good, but losing Sunkist (and funding) and Zahid were huge like you mentioned. Rebuilding the RTC is a big factor. If Ysaguirre, McClane and Larkin were in the lineup it would help a lot. It always seems to be a big mystery as to what is going on, but that's not uncommon in college wrestling. You may be right that they need a reset.
-
Yes he is the head coach - Larkin is the the co-founder of Valiant, director of operations and does some coaching.
-
Wildcard in the sense of his health and how it affects his wrestling... Of course he's good when he is healthy - he was in good health and put together a great run through the Pac 12 and NCAA.... prior to that he was in bad health and recovering and lost to the OSU backup.
-
Surprised to see Vasquez gassed - he moved up a weight so it shouldn't be a weight issue. He could still AA, but he is on the outside looking in. He doesn't seemed to have developed as well as I thought he would. Same with Chlebove. He seemed to make jumps last season and has looked a little flat. Schultz just seems like he is done. Ruiz is a nice spark for th team. He has looked pretty decent this season. On top of Larkin, where have Ysaguirre, McClane and Manville been?
-
Cool... I will have to take a look. Larkin has done a great job at Valiant.
