I hate this, why does the #2 seed get absolutely hosed with having to face the returning medalist? Even the #4/5 seeds get a little better draw in not being forced to wrestle the returning medalist. The returning medalist(s) should be the #1 and possibly #2 seeds with their bye to the finals. Here is how they should do it

As stated it happened multiple times at other events over a few year span from what I gathered. It wasn't just in Kazakhstan.

They introduced the blockchain stuff mysteriously after there was a bug found in the randomizer device they were using. There were random numbers that were NEVER rendered even after 1000s of events. If you check the draw numbers from 2018 and 2019 you will notice that the numbers 1, 4, 39, 53, 60, 66, 71, 79, and 85 are never drawn. Juniors in 2019 only had the #39 not drawn, but Cadet, Junior, and Senior worlds in those years had the other numbers not drawn.

What are reasonable expectations for NIU? Obviously 2 AA's over 20 years isn't good, just curious what you would want to expect from the program.

It wasn't 15 years between AA's, they had one in 2021 also. They have consistently had kids in the blood round.

Growing up our guys have their formal season(November-February/March) and then an informal off-season with usually something once or twice a month. Then on the international stage they compete at most a handful of times. This is a hard adjustment when you go from getting constant feedback of your skills and abilities to needing to get that feedback during practice scenarios. Hence, why you see guys do well right after a college season, then take a few years to adjust to an international schedule. You don't see this type of plateauing or regression in international wrestlers because they are used to that kind of schedule.

The refs seemed to give a lot more 4's to the defensive guys in this situation all tournament. Same thing happened for Snyder and I believe I saw it a few other times.

Freestyle is best for the highest level of wrestling. Just getting an exposure can show at least an ounce of difference between two highly skilled athletes. We have all seen extremely boring folkstyle matches between two wrestlers that are evenly matched end in something boring like a few more seconds of riding time. The freestyle rules allow for more than just control in order to score when you have two skilled wrestlers. The element of exposure forces a wrestler to be aware of their positioning at all times. Freestyle being 90% on your feet gives you a lot more opportunity for scores from a variety of positions. Both folkstyle and freestyle have their places in America which is great. There are exciting matches and boring matches in each style. There are weird rules in each style also.
