Blaze just got rag doll ridden in the third place bout…. Cost him the match.

he had a year in this room and has been  practicing getting off bottom since he was like 5 years old

I feel like you ignored most (all?) of my post just to make your point lol.

Blaze has had no offense all year against the top 133s. He has incredible defense. He has good counters. But the ability to get in on shots has been virtually non-existent and the ability to finish shots has been totally non-existent. if that’s who you are, then yeah, you’re prone to being ridden out (side note: I told my buddy “dumb decision” when Blaze chose bottom. I knew he wasn’t getting out. Seidel is the biggest hammer on top in the sport this season).

Does anything you’ve seen from Ono suggest he’s going to struggle similarly to get to his offense? If he does, I’d be surprised. I think Ono offensively is like Messenbrink level.

You could ragdoll ride Messenbrink for 2:00 and still lose 12-6 because of what took place in the other 5:00.

If he got out on bottom He would have went to ot.  Then rideouts.   If he was better at getting off bottom than his opponent he would win 2-2 on riding time.   He lost the match because he isn’t good enough on bottom.

who is shooting on Ono in the room…. Because it isn’t blaze.

your stipulating Ono doesn’t need to know how to get off bottom because he is to good in neutral.   We have never seen him in a folk style match.   Iron Mike Tyson has had competitive matches more recently than Ono.

It was just a dumb strategy for Blaze. He was never going to beat Seidel in rideouts. Seidel is IMO the best in the sport at riding & Blaze is maybe average? He would’ve been much better off with an additional 2:00 to push the pace. He had a better chance of scoring a point from Seidel getting hit stalling than he did escaping.

I don’t need to see Ono in a folk style match. I’ve seen how quick he is and how great he is at finishing. That doesn’t change. I’ve seen him dominate senior level freestyle. You saw the same stuff from Messenbrink when he was an under the radar transfer from Cal Baptist.

i’ll concede, maybe Ono will be poor on bottom. Good freaking luck neutralizing him on his feet for 5:00 or 7:00 to where that matters.

He’s shown you how he handles modern scrambling …. Cause scrambling doesn’t exist in freestyle like it does in folkstyle

The easiest position to learn, I am sure after 2 years in that PSU room, he can get off bottom. The Cubans at Iowa State never had issues.

Bastida looked fantastic on bottom last night.  He's gotten so confident in his skills from the bottom position that he waved off his coaches when they told him to choose neutral.

First time he has not got off bottom all year, does that constitute weakness on bottom? Do we now say he is a bad bottom wrestler?

No, but the scouting report was to attack in neutral.  They knew Trumble was going to have an advantage from the top position.  Tactics are important in high level matches. Bastian learned a hard lesson.

would not disagree with that at all.

Yojiro Uetake come over from Japan to wrestle for Oklahoma State from 1964-1966. He went undefeated all three years and won an Olympic gold medal for Japan in 1964 and 1968. I have no idea how well Ono will do, but to act like the switch to folkstyle is an insurmountable impediment to great NCAA success seems faulty to me.

So one guy did it 60 years ago = anybody can do it

Abe did it in the 90s, but it seems pretty rare for international (freestyle) guys to win in D1/folkstyle, at least not at the level PSU aims for. Is there a definitive list of overseas guys who came over and made the transition to folk? There's Bastida, Kharchla, Ech, Sakamoto. Earlier: Bekzod, Novachkov, Dhesi, Sanjaa, Gelogaev, Slavikowski, Abdurakhmanov... probably a bunch of others I'm forgetting or who never cracked the lineup.

And a couple you may have repeated! (I jest, I think you might be talking about Bek's brother Muz, who wrestled for American).  Bek had another brother as well, just not as good.  A few more Mongolians.  Then you had Jesus Wilson and Lazaro Reinoso wrestling for lower division schools.  Did Alexis Vila ever make it into a lineup? Miron Kharachala?

Sonny gave Cross his best match at the Olympics.

Also Kolat's fave workout partner.

I also think it is important to note that PSU had a Japanese coach on staff at that point.

Coach Oishi was awesome!

I think Ono is better than anyone on this list by a decent amount.

I also think bottom will obviously be his weakest spot.  It may matter all season for him.  It may matter once like it did with Batista.  Or he may be so good he chooses neutral all season and takes everyone down and it doesn't matter even a little bit.

I will also add there may not ever have been a more fun college wrestler to watch than Gelogaev.

Yesterday Pyles said he doesn't think Ono is even going to make the lineup!!

what’s the context behind that Bar? He won’t make the line up because he’ll lose in the wrestle offs or just won’t compete for what ever the reason? I’m really looking forward to this guy starting in November. I feel he’ll raise the bar even higher. I hope he starts.

Pyles thinks he won't be the best guy at any weight........with Blaze and Desmond there. Ono will wrestle a few times but won't be the guy in March.

you know there are certain things I’d bet $$ on and this guys success when he does start is one prediction I’m willing to put my $$ where my mouth is. Thanks for the feedback!

If this season told us anything its that freestyle results do not always equal folkstyle even with guys that wrestle both styles

Manville beat Vega this summer: National champ 0-2 at NCAA's
Robideau got beaten pretty soundly by Duke 3 time: National champ Third (yes I know cradle on his but)
Robideau beat Antrell: Split Second match soundly won by duke
Lilledahl teched his way to final x had 3 one score matches at NCAA's
Blaze beat davino 7-0: Davino won the h2h 2-1
Blaze teched seidel 2 years ago at nat freestyle duals and beat him 5-1 at u20 trials: Seidel won 5-0
Seidel lost to Isaiah cortez 6-1 at the open: First period tech for Seidel

Ono has a pretty good gutwrench.  My guess is that it won't work very well next year.

Seidel isn't the best in the sport at riding.  He got beat in the top bottom game by Forrest in both matches.
