Projected Lineup Post Transfers

125 - Kilkeary (Dom pushes)

133 - Davino

141 - Bouzakis (Karson Brown pushes)

149 - Kade Brown (Shaw pushes)

157 - Stiles

165 - Cannon

174 - Smith

184 - Fishback

197 - Rogotzke (Shumate pushes)

Heavy - Feldman

I realistically see Davino, Cannon, Smith (if healthy), Fishback and Feldman AA…

I have serious doubts that Smith can hold 174 effectively all year.

my opinion only, obviously. He’s definitely AA caliber if he can.

Yea I made sure to annotate “healthy” on there for that reason…if he can’t Birden or Schriel can slide in there and still do OK

I think Cannon stays 65, Stiles puts his hat in the ring at 65. I also think Shumate starts at 97

Cannon was 57 last year and has said he wants to stay there. There’s no way Stiles survives another year at 49 though. Stiles going to 57 and Cannon to 65 is your best chance of having two AAs.

Shumate could win the 97 spot, he’s had a good Freestyle showing this offseason. Rogotzke has shown a better ability to transition back to folkstyle in their careers so far…but we’ll see.

Stiles and Birden both entered U23s at 74 KG, FWIW.

Oh I know. And I’m sure Stiles is beyond happy to just be wrestling comfortably during the offseason…competitively wise in folkstyle I like Cannon better at 65 and Stiles at 57.

I hear you, but Cannon and Ryan have said in several interviews since NCAAs that 157lbs is where Cannon will be next season.

That infers that Stiles will be either 149lbs or 165lbs.  I would wager him at 74 KG is less about being comfortable and more about testing the waters there.

Yep we’ll see if they’ll really put the individuals before team or not…I mean this team isn’t going to trophy either way so it is what it is

Cannon's ceiling at 157 is higher than either would be at 165.  That likely means more team points at NCAAs.

Stiles also is a more physical wrestler.  So long as he can add appropriate size by season's end, he likely has a better style for 165lbs than Cannon does.

Why ignore the actual horse's mouth on this?

I think a healthy Cannons ceiling is higher at either weight. Not to say Stiles isn’t tough but I wouldn’t doubt it if Paddy (similar style) wasn’t handling him in practice and he barely AA’d. Cannon has that MM light trait that’s just difficult for guys to adjust to, especially more traditional types like Stiles and the Paddy’s of the world at 65+.

I’m not necessarily ignoring it…the season just ended, the threat of the portal was there, I and others (none of us really matter) don’t think it’d be the best move for the team. I’m just waiting to see.

To add to your stance as well - the Devil's Advocate to myself, Cannon, and Ryan is that if Monster Mitch goes 174lbs, then the 165lb landscape changes rather drastically.

I think because they understand that Cannon is a contender at 157lbs and not 165lbs, then the aim is to get a Natty Daddy - especially since they aren't really in trophy contention next season as-is.

Last season Ryan mentioned more than once that 57 was a struggle for Cannon. Four losses with three to Duke. 57 really doesn't look to be a much better weight for Cannon even if Duke moves up, Still have Kannon, Robideau, Taylor, Cardenas and Kasak (if he goes).

Cannon at 65 with Duke still seems like a better chance (even with the three losses). Stiles at 57 may be a whole different wrestler...Lots of close losses at 149, but I'm struggling to see him beating any of the wrestlers mentioned above.

I started this reply a couple hours ago and I'm sure there have been responses since. Mea culpa... 🚬

I agree, I was one of the ones advocating he (Cannon) go 174lbs, if Paddy got an additional year/stayed.  The main aim is to avoid Mesenbrink, I think.  Of any animal they have from 149-184, Monster Mitch is the only one that is 'Next Topic.'

I also admit that when the talk of next season was happening, it was fresh off NCAAs and Mesenbrink was the assumed returning 165lb champ at that weight.  Now he might go 174lbs, so we'll see.

With regard to Mesenbrink - is there any value for history sake at remaining at 165 and making a claim at being the 165 GOAT?

He doesn’t care about such trivial things. He prioritizes joy and finds fulfillment in the process, not seeking futile theoretical message board titles.

I once made a deal with @Le duke that Mesenbrink would finish his college career with more titles than Haines.  I dont remember what the stakes were, but I have now won.  But if Dukey knew that MM would be a Nittany Lion, he probably wouldn't have made the bet.

Swiderski also at 74, and I saw someone say he would go 41

To no one in particular:

Is it so damned hard to put a leading '1' in an imperial weight class to distinguish it from the metric weight class?

I'll add to that... labeling with the apt -KG or -lbs takes nanoseconds.

… and is it really too much to ask people to type out National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Individual National Championship instead of “Natty Daddy”?

Quite simple. College wrestling doesn't use metric...:classic_dry:
