Iowa is still a good program. Just not at the top of the class & slipping a bit more lately.

Many are calling for Tom Brands to be gone and some want Brent Metcalf hired to do the job.

When has Metcalf shown he would do much of anything differently than Brands and "The Iowa Way"?

He was very good as a competitor in college. Good on the International circuit. But definitely not an innovator, more of a grinder on the mat.

Is he that way at Iowa State as a coach? Has he shown any signs of moving past the old "beat them to death" Iowa mentality? Has he shown he can take good kids and make them better as they move through the room?

We have no real feel of how Dake or Burroughs would do as full time coaches. Right now we are seeing The Taylor Effect take hold. That is David Taylor is tearing it up at OSU so another big name has do be able to do it at Iowa.

Two good coaches have shown they are not Dan Gable. Would Metcalf be the third? One thing he has going is he was not there with Gable as the coach, just Brands trying to be Gable. Will Metcalf try to be Brands?

” Never attribute to inspiration that which can be adequately explained by delusion”.

No Metcalf doesn't move the needle anymore with recruits. If Iowa is looking to keep in house then they need Spencer Lee to have major success on the Senior level then take over. It's all about recruiting talent.

Goetz and Brands already met and his job is safe. I like to think that Metcalf has spent enough time away from the mothership to bring something new (same with Ramos and DSJ). He's said before that getting out of the Iowa room really opened his eyes to doing things differently. He also seems to have grown and matured A LOT since his competition days. That said, someone mentioned on another thread that ISU had some transfer-outs supposedly because of Metcalf's intensity. Who knows

IMO Iowa needs a big BIG name when Brands retires..........i.e. Spencer Lee, Burroughs, etc.

They need someone who high school recruits actually know and really want to wrestle for.

Spencer Lee post 2028 Olympics?

Getting a hire like David Taylor making a splash like that has never happened before. May not ever happen again. Timing has to work out for one of our legends to take over a top tier program like Iowa. Only JB and Dake can make that kind of splash. Give Spencer Lee some more to time to establish himself as one of the best Americans of his era, and he can make a big splash too

Tom needs to rally the troops and bring back the calvary.  Let bygons be bygons.  Ramos and Metcalf Assistants, Gilman coaching the RTC.

I think this offseason will very telling on what happens next at Iowa. Tom hinted at getting a succession plan in place during his recent interview.

If they bring in a big named young assistant during the offseason then I think that telegraphs the most likely scenario. If they don’t then I think it’s out of Tom’s hands as to who is the next HC.

All that being said, I think it’s fairly obvious that they should give Burroughs whatever he wants in order to get him onboard as HC. He is the by far the best next big thing from a coaching standpoint. If he wants the job this April then he should get it no matter what the AD told Tom. He might be fine waiting another year and getting his affairs in order out east before moving the family.

I agree. You get him when you can get him.

That was an interesting video. I feel like he made some really good points on Ramos that I hadn’t considered. The Terry thing was an insane suggestion though.

I think coaching changes are needed after a season like this and with all the outside pressure. Clearly, that won't happen with Tom. And I'm not convinced that it will happen regardless after the season based upon his frequent comments about "having the right guys in the room". He's too stubborn.

Burroughs appears to be the guy to make a big enough splash, and I can't see someone like him committing to anything but a head coaching job @ Nebraska or Iowa.

This, is the best option. Tom needs to become open minded and willing to accept new technique and new methods. He needs mend some bridges he has burned and learn from others. When people stop learning they become stagnant. That is how I see the Iowa program at this moment. If Tom can bring back guys like metcalf, ramos, gilman, Schwab, or show a willingness to be open minded and appreciate the technique and coaching strategy others are willing to bring, then the program will grow.

Morningstar and telford need to go first. Beth has already said Tom is safe, but a standard needs to be shown, mstar and telford need to be shown the door, bring in a new big man. Coon, davidson, someone, there is a lot of heavys out there with better resumes than telford. Mstar needs to go purely for the fact that anyone near his weight in the room has shown that they start to wrestle just like him. Boring, defensive, low scoring. Get him outta there

This is the key.  It's not really about being an innovator.  It's first, second, and third about recruits.  I love David Taylor and think he's doing a great job for the team I root for.  But he didn't make Jax Forrest great.  He made Jax want to wrestle at OSU.  The incoming recruits are better than ever and the care more about winning a gold medal than ever before.  If they think you can surround them with the practice partners to do that, then they consider your school.  If you can't then they don't.  Plenty of schools develop talent really well and don't get on the radar of top recruits.

John Smith no longer moved the needle for recruits.  Think about that.  Obviously the Brands do not.

Yep.  A great marriage of university and Coach.  Obviously nobody is drawing guys to non-premier wrestling universities.  And obviously Taylor wasn't going to OSU without promises about support that would give him the money and RTC athletes to land top guys.  When it all lines up it works.  It is clearly not all lined up at Iowa.  And putting the best technician in wrestling with no name at Iowa wouldn't work.  But putting the best name with institutional and program support would work.

Timing was perfect for David Taylor at Okie State.  Taylor had one hell of a mentor, and in my opinion, outside looking in, pretty much a "clone" of coach Cale.  He just rebranded it at Okie State.  Watch him on the mat side, in interviews, laid back persona pushing the fun factor in the room etc...  Both with NCAA and World level creds.  Taylor is smart and a really good communicator.  What's not to like about what he had accomplished in such a short time?  Now throw in the blue blood tradition and some deep pockets to grease the machine, and a rabid "blue collar" fanatic fase base that is searching for a winner to hitch their horse to.  Heck, not to mention the staff he has put together and regional training for next level.

If MU ever dropped wrestling, which is always a fear in the football hungry SEC, I'd shift my loyalty to Okie State, although I have a ton of respect for Schwab and Northern Iowa.

They’re obviously good for the apparatus, but get them administrative roles, that room needs an injection of life and creativity big time.

After hearing a quick JB talk at a camp he was coaching at, he seems to have matured fantastically, any team would be lucky to have him, but he strikes me as really digging the business and dad thing pretty good.
