Seems like the only way Iowa moves past the Brands now is with a big donor....similar to OSU and the way NIL and everything else is going in college sport. Does Iowa have that billionaire....if so, who could come in and win with a big budget. Seems like the trend for recruiting would favor youth and recent street cred vs the CEO type that is needed.

My top picks

1. Burroughs

2. Dake

3. Others, Schwab, Popolizio, Casey Cunningham,  who else, hope they would not just go back to the Gable lineage by default.

They should mix things up.  Give Terry the opportunity to see what he can do!

It would be interesting to do an analysis of all colleges and college sports across the board where a school showed improvement by making a change in coaches. If the AD at Iowa can demonstrate a reduction in revenue from the men’s wrestling program, for what ever the reason, then maybe a case could be made to replace these guys.

Do you really think either Burroughs or Dake would come in to take over the program? That either would want to live there?  Do you really think either would be able to handle all the demands of being in charge? Why would Casey leave where he is?

Once the Terrible Two retire or are pushed off Iowa will drop even further.

There is no David Taylor waiting in the wings to take over the program.

Gary Kurdelmeier made the program a Champion & Dan Gable took it from there. Those days are over.

Tom is a good coach suffering from myopia - he can't see that changes have to be made. "We got the right guys" - "We gotta be better" - then it's SOS, Different Day.

I thought we would start hearing about a few small things after the Penn State massacre but other than some good performances from 'the usual suspects' we aren't seeing much. Yes, it takes time but for now we would expect more.

If the OSU move is the example, 250-500k a year would get a lot of good coaches to move. Especially when it comes with a loyal donor and fan base.

I’m not in the know but would the powers that be only hire an Iowa grad? If so, their applicant pool is fairly small with HC or Asst HC experience. Dresser would be a good fit but being a current cyclone may not be in his favor. Metcalf, St John same thing but proven coaches under Dresser’s wing. UNI Schwab would be a good option

If that was their policy they would have never won a NCAA team title correct?

We have covered this topic so many times in other threads I have lost track of all the available options I have listed. Doesn't matter anyway. You can list an option and people will tell you "who is out there that's better" people are too closed minded to understand that Iowa is a legacy program and would draw out a bunch of options that most people are not thinking of. No one thought that DT was ilon the coaching market until Okie st. Opened up. No reason to think that the same wouldn't apply to iowa coaching search.

Kemerer??  (he would drawl alot of interest from the Franklin Regional area not to mention PA), I have always respected Michael Kemerer as i bet alot of us do, total class act, maybe he brings in Jody Strittmatter (we all know his influence on young guns)

this is probably far fetched but......

Schwab would make a lot of sense although I like him at UNI

Even if you aren't a UNI fan, do yourself a favor and follow uni wrestling on insta. Schwabs coaching talks with the team will have you pumped up. He talks to people like he is talking to your soul. Seems like just an amazing leader.

I dunno if he's "ready" but I do think Kemerer is gonna be an excellent HC some day somewhere; word on the street was he was a finalist for the Bloomsburg job already

No parent in their mind would send their son to wrestle at a school under the leadership of Austin DeSanto. I’d bet the pig man’s farm on it.

What if the new coach brings in Eric Juergens.  Two time NCAA Champion, 2x 3rd at NCAA, 2x Big Ten Champion, Head Coach at Augustana (yes D3) so the means he handled technique, recruIting, fundraising, scheduling and dealing with Administration.  Strong ties to Young Guns as he runs the Iowa portion and does camps and clinics in PA, Wisconsin, IA and so on with Jody so he knows the High School scene.  Would give the die hard Iowa fans their Iowa tie with strong ties to PA and IA.

now your thinking brother "Greenwave"........

"Scottishsteel" i did not know that about Bloomsburg, thanks for the info

mix in Jody and Juergens with Kem as head coach and Iowa is, IOWA again, please dont get me wrong Brands is and will always be a legend, i think wrestlers of today are simply taking a different direction in coaching philosphy, Iowa has always had that "Bulldog" or "Pitbull" attitude, I personally like it, but now kids like it with a side helping of a "greyhound" (blazing fast pace) with a final serving of "Chihuahua" (endless motor that wants to attack even if the cards are aginst him, lol)....

the schools/coaching staff that are blending all that "dog-in-him-fight" into 1 room is the schools thats winning the new recruits + transfers.......

Nope.

Kurdelmeier wrestled for Iowa & was NCAA 177lb champ in 1958. Gable - did not wrestle for Iowa.

Before Kurdelmeiere Iowa had never won an NCAA Title. Iowa State was the big dog back then.

Kurdelmeier signed Gable on as a coach right away. World & Olympic Champion - a major coup.

Which brings us to Iowa & the idea of "only Iowa guys" for the coaching spot.

They might go that route but pickings are slim if you add in World and Olympic Gold as an attraction to get the job. Today the room really seems to need the marketing this brings. Regional Training Centers & Freestyle development is an attraction & having a coach with success at the highest level helps push that aspect & seems to give recruits & their parents the assurance the school is fully competitive.

It is hard to overcome "corn or cosmopolitan' as a choice for many. Iowa is seen as a lower class destination for a kid looking for a good experience and is thought below the more populous States. What, really is in Iowa? It almost makes North or South Dakota attractive - even Oklahoma looks good in comparison.

So - Coach, #1. Training facility & Olympic/World class partners, #2. Education & opportunities after, #3.

Iowa is in trouble and part of that is sticking with "Dan did it so it must be right" philosophy. Somehow forgetting that Dan Did It while adapting a bit here & there to maximize the abilities various wrestlers brought to the mat. We are not seeing that from the Terrible Two.

A tough Iowa program is good for Wrestling. A solid group of programs with legitimate shots at a title would be even better. That said - does Cael & Co have a real shot at Gables 9 in a row?

Wasn't Gable there for the first title?

The program needs a complete overhaul and face lift.

If Burroughs or Dake were offered a big enough payday AND given actual control of the program without external interference and allowing them to actually run the program the way they see fit either one would absolutely come.

Boosters need to fund the program and shut up. They should be there to give money and nothing else. Thats it. No interference.

But that won't happen.
