If they’re retired, they have a lot of time on their hands. Who cares what they do with it?

Why not just say “no trump”… their metaphor no kings makes them look like idiots.  Same idiots not on the streets with the previous not king presidents.  Organized idiots.

Calling it "no kings" makes it obvious why Trump is a threat to democracy and our constitution. The reason is part of the title.

When it upsets the wingers, it's a good title.

Didn’t say don’t do it.  It’s their right to do so.  I said they accomplished zero

the left isn’t pro commie or is it?

The No Kings protestors are being called out as massive hypocrites after waving COMMUNIST FLAGS in NYC

They don't like kings — but they like straight-up DICTATORS.

The dumbest political movement of our lifetime.

What has Trump done, that some other president has not, that makes him a king?

1.  No kings protests go on and are not stymied such as in Iran and Palestine and Russia.

2.  Kings are not subject to a judicial branch.   Trump has shown time and again he is subject to the judicial branch.

It is not that it upsets the supporters of Trump, it's that it is a ridiculous theme that has no basis in fact, reality or history.   If No Kings is attached to Trump, where is the evidence of him "trying" to be a king?   There is plenty of evidence he is not trying to be a king.   So the hyperbolic-ness of this is just astounding to a neutral observer?

Max Dean on having to self-censor his views to get good grades in school.

I suspect that Dean failed to address some portion of the assignment in his paper. I doubt the prompt was simply as he put it “What did you gain from these books?”  If the prompt he described was accurate then there problem is with the prompt - too open ended.

This is the course description for the class.  “This course raises the following questions:-How has censorship been justified? When, if ever, is censorship justifiable? What are the grounds on which censorship can be judged successful or incomplete? Who censors? Who is censored? What are local categories of censorship? Though books are banned for reasons of blasphemy, sedition, and obscenity in various guises in several cultures, are these global categories? How do writers write against a ban? How do they write within it? What are the roles of importation, technologies of circulation, and geography in the censorship of texts? How do border-crossings and forms of miscegenation offend? Is there a unifying aesthetics to books that offend?”

It would seem to me that the first question in that list, “How has censorship been justified?” was what the professor’s comments were getting at.  Reading these texts in the context of this class Dean probably should have addressed how censorship of the books or censorship present in the stories was justified.  Bringing up COVID is a little odd, but perhaps the professor thought Dean would connect with a current day censorship example with concrete consequences more so than the censorship in Fahrenheit 451.

It’s been a long time since I took a college class, but I have never seen someone get a bad grade for either being too conservative or not liberal enough.  I have seen students completely miss the point of an assignment, be confidently wrong, and either complete an assignment or participate in discussion on a topic without doing the associated reading with some regularity.  Not enough information here to know if Dean’s assessment is correct or if the grade was justified.

So you know more about a college class than someone who took it? 🤣

Who are you to deny his truth?

Not to mention, he had already attended an Ivy League institution.  He is clearly an intellectual, but he disagrees with you, so... (If he made a different pointm you'd be talking about how smart he is bc you know- Ivy...)

I'm not sure what we agree or disagree on.  I don't think it matters and that's kind of the point.

I think an assignment such as this should have a clear prompt and a handful of things the professor is looking for the student to address.  By Dean's tweet he wrote about one theme in the books.  There are more than that.  If the professor had 5 things they were looking for and Dean only addressed 1 or 2 then that explains the grade.  I have never been given an assignment to read two novels and write what I gained from them with no rubric.  Have you?  This should be a college course not a book club.

You do not know what the exact prompt or rubric was.  Dean does, so I am inclined to believe him.  He doesn't need to include every detail to make the gist of his story true.

Yes, when you capitalize the K, that is the commonly accepted abbreviation for the state in which the University is located.

There plenty of conservative professors and conservative university’s. If conservatives think schools are too liberal why don’t they try to change that?

A lot of the so called conservative institutions outside of BYU are not actually holding conservative values at all.

The only professors I remember that went out of their way to let you know their political beliefs were the far lefties.

As far as changing people, that is more of the liberal way. "If you don't agree with me I am going to vigorously force my beliefs down your throat one way or another and if you don't agree you are a bigot".
