Could just be a quirk in wrestlestat, but Jersey Robb and Brayden Thompson are suddenly listed as unattached.  Could they have withdrawn from school to preserve eligibility?

Someone on the VT board earlier mentioned Thompson was removed from the roster on their team page.  Quick check shows both are no longer listed.

Rumors is Robb and Thompson both were seeking a medical of sorts but asked to wrestle against Iowa State.  After turning down the match, they were promptly removed from the roster the following Monday.

Just a rumor.

How many backup 184 lbers does one need especially with roster limits ... plus the 197 made 184 on short notice.

I also believe the same on Thompson. I haven’t seen Robb in a while.

Robb hasn’t got a lot of time since Bixby. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him in Norman. Gonna be a tough road to get in at 84 in Stilly.

I mean if he's going for a medical shirt, it'd be pretty crappy to send him out for a single dual 2nd semester, which I assume would kill the chance of said medical...

Thanks for sharing this guys.  I think its just a function of being a contending team when you have high level guys who cannot crack the lineup and don't want to waste eligibility (and thereby precious NIL money) by riding pine.

Thompson is apparently asking for a medical hardship and not redshirt. He is also walking around over 200lbs. Can’t speak to the Robb situation.

That's every 184 lber. on Monday morning.😂

These guys should've gone in the portal as soon as Ok. St. brought in Merrill and Ryder. Both are NCAA qualifier level guys at another school.

Is a “medical hardship” different than a “medical redshirt”?

Keep an eye on Ronnie Ramirez as well. Thompson is a bust, Robb is/could be a stud.

Yep... with all the guys coming in they can juggle redshirts for a while, but at some point the wave comes crashing in.

Yea it sounded weird to me as well so I did some researching and this is what I found: (Anyone with better clarification feel free to interject)

Key Differences and Similarities

Definition: Both refer to regaining a year of eligibility when a season-ending injury occurs.

Approval Process: A medical hardship requires official documentation and approval from the NCAA or conference, whereas a standard redshirt is often a coaching decision.

Participation Threshold: To qualify for a medical hardship, the athlete must not have played in more than three games or 30% of the scheduled contests, whichever is greater.

Timing: The injury must occur before the midpoint of the season.

Result: Both allow the athlete to sit out and gain an extra year of eligibility.

In talking to some parents over the years, I was VERY surprised to hear what some of the top coaches asked kids to wrestle or "required" some matches that lead to greater injury.

Yes but also why would a coach keep guys on the roster who are planning on leaving after the year and refuse to actually compete while there. They are just deadwood at that point

Starters need workout partners.

So the guys are too hurt to wrestle in the matches but healthy enough to be good workout partners? They have enough guys on the roster without them

they could probably wrestle matches but want to keep medical intact.

If he is hurt is is super crappy for them to ask him to wrestle.

If he is not hurt and was healthy to wrestle but didn't want to wrestle because it would hurt his case that he is hurt, even while he's not, then I would say the team isn't the crappy one in that case.  There is no responsibility on a team to help an athlete game the medical hardship system with a fake injury.

It’s a pretty standard practice most coaches use to help there athletes though. You only have X amount of years to compete , if you don’t see the mat and are planning on transferring for your final year and a coach wants you to burn all that to wrestle in 1 meaningless dual then that coach is not a good person.

If you are on the team you should want to compete. Look at Gabe Arnold, Joe Sealey, and Connor Mirasola. They are "burning" years to wrestle for Iowa/PSU because they are part of the team and want to compete, not just save their 4 years for the perfect situations. (Even though Mirasola might be taking a medical this year)
