I feel like there’s less dependence on the portal this year than previously.

# of transfers in starting lineup, unless I missed any:

PSU: 2

tOSU: 1

OK State: 4 (interestingly, of their 10 starters counting Forrest, they have 22 total losses, and transfers have 17 of them)

Iowa: 4 (was 5)

Minnesota: 2

ISU: 5

Nebraska: 2

VT: 3

NC State: 2

Michigan: 3

I guess Dresser is this year’s “most valuable purchaser”

Over the last 5 years I think Iowa has had the most transfer starters by far of any top D-1 team.  Definitely a conscious effort to use NIL bucks to get transfers rather than develop homegrown talent.  Until this year it has worked well for them.

tOSU has 2 - Stiles and Fishback

Not a top team obviously but Rider has 7 transfers starting for them , mostly bc all the top guys got poached by bigger conferences. Still 7 guys isn’t bad for a school with 0 resources that looks like they wrestle in a cafeteria

If u are factoring the last few years Michigan would beat Iowa for that.

Wouldn't hey have really?  Numbers on that?

Penn State should score the most NCAA points from transfers as they are looking at Mesenbrink winning and Welsh top 4 at worst.

The race for second with transfers should be good though with Iowa State having the volume of potential podium finishers but no one other than Elam with a realistic shot at the finals.

Bastida does not have a realistic shot at the finals?

I’d also argue that Echemendia has a shot at the finals, he’d obviously have to be opposite of Mendez for that to happen.

Bastida isn't a transfer that I'm aware of.

It helps if I actually read what you wrote.

I still believe Ech is a potential finalist (if you count him as a transfer).

Mendez is a near lock but I believe you could see any of Vega, Hardy, Ech, Stanich, etc opposite of him.

Exactly.   I was using him as an example of someone that counts as a transfer in reference to Ech counting as a transfer.

Perhaps reading comprehension isn't your strong suit.

Oh, but it is.

You brought up a guy who had nothing to do with the situation who had transferred, and hinted maybe he shouldn't count as a transfer.  Not only is my reading comprehension in the top 1%, but it also allows me to read between the lines.

There were numerous PSU fans that tried claiming Kerk shouldn’t count as a transfer

I don’t recall much discussion of Kerk not being a transfer from the fan base. But doesn’t matter, he’s already graduated and gone.
I think when we get talking “the portal” in pejorative terms - hired guns, bags of money, 1yr mercenaries etc - we think some of the recent 1yr fill ins and maybe not the kids who come for multiple years at the new school.
That’s the way I look at it. It’s all the portal and they’re all transfers but I look at say a Kerk (followed Snyder, never wrestled at tOSU), MM (2 matches at Cal Baptist during a RS yr, he’s gonna end up a 4yr PSU starter), Caliendo (gonna end up being 3 yrs at Iowa) differently than I look at guys like a Parco, Teemer, Buchanan, Truax, etc. The 1yr fill ins - whether it’s to fill a hole in the lineup or improve over the current starter.

Regardless, it’s the new way of the world - portal, NIL, revenue sharing coming. The wild Wild West is here, like it or not. We ain’t putting this genie back in the bottle.

Several on here said kerk and mm don’t count as transfers.   I bumped a few of them.  The blue glasses can change your view if you wear long enough

Kerk wasn't the portal, was he (pre-portal)?

Also, he followed his training partner (Snyder).

Also, also, wasn't he Christian Carrol before Christian Carrol was Christian Carrol? 6 or 7 schools before he competed?

I never said he didn't transfer.  I said he was pre-portal, which is what this thread is about I thought.

Kerk was definitely a transfer. I can’t remember if he was pre portal days or early portal days. And yes I recall he committed to many a school before he actually enrolled in one and then transferred to another.
I have no issue with the portal, kids should be able to change schools like coaches can at the drop of a hat. Fair is fair.
But I do think not all transfers are created equal. I don’t look at a 1yr mercenary the same way I do a kid who found a better fit and ended being somewhere 3-4 yrs (5 in Kerks case due to the COVID year) after being somewhere first for a hot minute. 🤷‍♂️
