Is it time to allow tap outs in NCAA wrestling?

I don’t think we should allow dangerous holds. Safety should absolutely be the priority. So let’s get that cleared up right now.

But even without dangerous holds, tap outs would have benefits.

First, in the general population, tapping someone out is one of the goals of grappling. So if a clip of a tap out goes viral, people will intuitively understand what happened.

Second, allowing tap outs would prevent embarrassing holds from continuing. This would allow athletes to maintain their dignity.

Third, tap outs would provide an additional layer of protection against injuries. And again, safety is the number one priority.

Overall, it seems like tap outs would provide good benefits, and have little to no drawbacks.

What happens when you tap out?  Does it count as a fall?  Do you get 4 back points?

It would count as a fall.

I just realized that tapping out would be good for a wrestler who is absolutely too exhausted to continue, or simply mentally beaten.

if you tap out before getting pinned your coach should bench you. tapouts are so you don't get physically injured in a sport where the rules allow a guy to yank your arm out of its socket, not so you don't get embarrassed in front of your mom.

The student announcers in a recent PSU dual think we already have them. Distinctly heard them say something about “going for the submission”.

I’m not in favor, you have MMA and other combat sports you can do if you want to pursue painful/dangerous holds that the goal is either injure your opponent or they tap out to prevent injury. I don’t wanna see guys running nasty bars and torquing knees and legs to get a submission. I can watch MMA to get my fill of that.

Saving embarrassment? Wrestle better, give up fewer points. You can already submit in wrestling…guys working you? Just put those shoulders down it’ll be over immediately. Don’t want the world to see your taint? Don’t get spladled. Who was that Nebraska kid? I forget?

That happened during a scramble. Another scramble led to the announcer saying the PSU wrestler was "going for the pin".

Didn’t Nickerson tap out in an NCAA final?

Which one, v. Debuque or v. Donahoe? I don't think think he did in the donahoe one. I have time today I'll have to watch the 2009 debuque match. And see if he did there

Full of un-bias blasphemy.

Zain Retherford would have induced a lot of tap outs.  Knowing he was going to work a bow and arrow, many opponents would have tapped as soon as they gave up a takedown.
