His family health issues definitely impacted his ability to both wrestle and more importantly stay in good academic standing. Allegedly he was being escorted to classes in his last semester while on the team. Also his dad was a toxic poster regarding the team. I would say a lot would have to change before we see TJ back in a VT singlet. Good to hear his mom is on the mend. I also heard that he and his brother stopped wrestling after the ACCs that year and did not help in the room during the NCAA Prep for the other 9 wrestlers going to the NCAAT. Not sure if it was true or not but that was one of the rumors floating around in addition to the academic issues. Edited April 15 by Hokie7PTMove

I’m sure they are embarrassed 1

I think the rumor stems from Haught's role shifting I don't know if there is any juice to it.

Preseason, TJ’s dad said something to the effect TJ could beat Starcocci, which obviously didn’t age well since he was the only non qualifier for nationals for the team. TJ’s dad even publicly suggested on the VT board that TJ would transfer after getting on the podium his freshman year. He said he needed to be respected. Many fans were supportive of TJ staying on the team and it’s assumed he was compensated to stay for his sophomore year and beyond. I and others called it for what it was, a childish temperature tantrum wanting attention by his dad. Well that failed and that behavior will likely resurface wherever he lands. I hope he goes elsewhere and that appears to be the case since he is in the portal 1

Go Hokies Posted April 15 Posted April 15 With being a Hokie Wrestling Alum, I agree with everything that Creek Chub is saying. I think it is best that the entire Stewart family move on from Blacksburg. 2
WrestlingRasta Posted April 15 Posted April 15 I had this weird feeling that Crookham was going to end up at VT and Siedel going 41. Obviously didn't happen, but none the less the Hokies are a squad I'll be watching with much intrigue over the next few years. 1

He got majored and lost to Ridge Lovett 14-8 in the 24-25 season, as well as taking a loss to Webster. Henson was 1-1 with Lovett and maybe it's a moot point, but IMO I thought Henson should have had the takedown that they overturned with the review in the finals. That is not to mention the extremely close calls that SVN had at B10s against lower competition. 2. I would say that Henson beat Ridge and (arguably) should have been up 3-0 going into the 3rd period in the finals while SVN got majored and lost 14-8 is evidence that Henson has passed up SVN. That good very well be a match-up thing and not all that relevant, but it's not "no data or evidence." I also think Henson is a terrible match-up for SVN. We've seen many guys keep it close or get leads on Shane early only to crack late where he is able to come back and win. Swiderski is like a poor man's Henson IMO and that match was extremely close. 3. You're ignoring context with that statement. Shane was absolutely good enough, that's why he was the favorite, to win the title this year, and he didn't seal the deal. The difference between this year and next year is that I don't think he will be the favorite going into next years tournament, and given that he couldn't make the run this year, I think it's unlikely he does next year against an even tougher field. SVN is going into his 6th season, so I don't think he's going to be making any big jumps in performance. Meanwhile, you're going to have Valencia entering his second year of a full college schedule, Henson will be back, and Vega will likely be entering the picture at 149 as well. I'm not saying SVN can't win, but I think it's a hell of a lot more likely that he doesn't. SVN beat Henson, two TDs to none. It wasn't close. Also, if PSU's trainer stuffs a plug up both of his nostrils at the start of the NCAA final, he wins that match comfortably. 1 1 1

Buddy, you're talking about a match that happened on the backside of the bracket more than three years ago when Henson was a true freshman. In 2025 SVN majored Webster 15-4 and then lost to him at B10s 3 weeks later. I'm going to say that what happened in 2023 between them has little to no relevance in what happens next year. My original statement was that he will not win NCAAs next year. Are you proclaiming that SVN will win the title or are you just upset because I think Henson is the favorite in that matchup? 2

AlderPeak Posted April 16 Posted April 16 SVN lost to Valencia. Valencia lost to Gaj, twice. Gaj was Henson's backup. If you're going the simple comparison route, that seems more relevant than referencing a match that happened three years ago.

In actuality Henson is a menace who's only public result this year was taking Bronze in a bracket that Kasak DNP in at Zagreb with two huge wins. 1

SVN beat Henson at the ncaa tournament they both wrestled 3 years at 149 and have identical records. Van ness has wrestled those 3 years in a much better conference then Henson and has bonus rate over 20 points higher in 3 ncaa tournaments Van ness has 10 bonus wins with 4 pins while Henson has 3 BW(1 tech ,2 majors) Does any of that point to Henson being the favorite going in? Other the projecting this magical jump he’s made in your head and people keep bringing up ridge or Aden Valencia we re talking SvN vs Henson not them and last they wrestled Van ness had 2 takedowns to 0 and controlled the entire match. These are just facts I’m convinced half of yall never wrestled in your lives with some of the stuff you say. Person A beat person b so he’ll definitely beat person c it’s nonsense wrestling is about match ups and styles. Like really how do you see Henson winning the match ? Be detailed how is he going to score bc the way I see it as bad of a match up Ridge is for SVN , SVN is that to Henson. I’ve always rooted for Vtech they been bringing in NJ guys since I was hs . Ive known Devon , Brandon and Shannon Carter forever and I was super pumped when Bassett and Miller flipped to Vtech but watching this fanbase slowly transform into toxic and obnoxious bunch like the PSU /ok state/ Iowa fans nowadays it’s disappointing. I know yall are excited and you should be but you guys just had a pretty bad ncaas so maybe pump the brakes a bit. 1

Henson's not a bonus machine, he's a heavy handfighter wear you down type of guy. He's good on the mat, good on his feet, and he has a very good gas tank. I see Henson winning the match by pressuring SVN and not giving him any space, russian ties, collar ties, heavy handfighting. Finishing quickly when he shoots (or bailing out instead of getting in a scramble). This takes a massive gas tank to do this against SVN and Henson has that. While you're alluding to a "magical" jump we aren't just pretending that we've heard Caleb is wrestling better than ever. We've had world class guys in the room pretty consistently with a goal of pushing Henson, also Henson spent time in a world class room in Japan with Kiyooka and other accomplished freestyle guys. We've only publicly seen him in Zagreb where he picked up two of his best wins ever. Taking SVN out of the equation. Caleb today looks better than Caleb when he won a national title. Why wouldn't we be confident that he can beat anybody out there? SVN or otherwise. I don't blame you for picking SVN, it's a reasonable argument, I'm just saying from my vantage point I'd take Caleb.

I appreciate your detailed answer , I also wasn’t referring to you when I was talking about v tech fans , more so the ones on X and Facebook. I think that’s a very reasonable take and breakdown for why you think he ll beat SVN, my personal opinion is he’ll have to out SVN SVN pressure wise to beat him and that’s a tall task for anyone, which is why I just think it’s a bad match up for Henson. And I’m not saying he definitely won’t win I’m just arguing based on everything laid out that SVN is favorite . I agree Caleb is 10x better then his freshman season but my point was so is SVN he’s just overshadowed by the all timers that have been around him in the lineup his whole career while Henson jumps stand out bc he’s the best guy on his team and arguably the best guy in his entire conference. I think when talking about the jumps each guy made people lose perspective because of that , just bc SVN is the 5th best guy on his own team doesn’t mean he hasn’t gotten a lot better since the last match up. 1
