Not to knit pick, but Marsteller never had a 40 win season.  He had 38 official wins in 2018.  6 were against D2 and D3 opponents.  That same year, Yianni Diakomihalis, as a true freshman also had 38 wins going 38-1.

From what I can tell, the last two to officially do it was 2014 Gabe Dean 41 wins and 2015 Walsh 40 wins

Marsteller had 44 wins is 2017-2018.  Six of those wins were against lower division wrestlers.  He beat 4 D2 wrestlers at the PSAC championships and Lock Haven wrestled a dual against a D2 school (Wheeling) and a D3 school (Messiah).  Whether you want to use total wins or just official D1 wins Marsteller had more wins than Diakomihalis in 2017-2018.  Marsteller’s overall record was 44-4 and official record was 38-4.

I have no idea how you came up with 38 wins for Diakomihalis in 2017-2018.  The official Cornell record book has his record as 37-1.  Wrestlestat has his overall record as 36-1 and his official record as 34-1.  Counting up the matches on Wrestlestat I arrive at 37-1, but one is a forfeit in a dual, one is against an unattached Spartan Combat RTC wrestler and two are against lower division opponents.  I guess maybe Wrestlestat isn’t counting the forfeit?  Or maybe it’s one of the other three.  I don’t really know, but I didn’t find 38 wins anywhere.

Diakomihalis’s 2017-2018 season is similar to the other wrestlers I mentioned in that he wrestled in a minor conference tournament that year, the New York Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships.  This tournament invites all wrestling programs from all divisions in the state of NY.  Unlike the All Academy Championships and the PSAC championships this one is still going, but I don’t think any D1 programs participated this year.  In 2017 Diakomihalis wrestled a Spartan Combat RTC wrestler (a teammate wrestling unattached), a wrestler from SUNY Farmingdale which I think is a club (NCWA) program but may have been entered unattached, and a wrestler from Army Perp school which is definitely a club program (NCWA) at the State tournament.

Diakomihalis’s win total in 2017-2018 is anywhere between 37 and 33 depending hoe you count the forfeit and the 3 unattached/NCWA wins.  I think the forfeit counts and the other do not so I’ll put him at 37 total wins and 34 official wins.  This is well below Marsteller’s 44 total wins and 38 official wins.

Guys,

Matches against non-D1 opponents from D2, D3, NAIA and NJCAA DO count as official bouts .They do NOT, however, factor into the qualification process. They're official bouts, they count on the official record, they just don't factor into the qualifying record.

Insert catchy tagline here.

Thanks.  What about NCWA, redshirts enrolled at an NCAA institution, grey shirts, and post graduate unattached wrestlers?  Do those matches count as official bouts?

Sure hopefully JB can answer that too.  I don't see why Soldier Salute and Last Chance Open matches would be any different, but I suppose I left out teammates and high school kids.  Those are unique cases.

Certified/Assessed is the new buzzword to hang on to, not enrolled.

Redshirting wrestlers: Counts.
High School wrestlers: Does NOT Count.
Wrestle-Offs/Ranking Matches: Does NOT Count.
Postgraduates, non-certified athletes: Does NOT Count.
Grayshirts: Does NOT Count.
NCWA Programs: Does NOT Count (unless transitioning between varsity divisions - Thomas More during its transition from NAIA to D2 would count as an opponent. The "clubs" don't count. Apprentice School, does count - they have an NCAA waiver, although it's been years since the wrestled a D1 team).

Basically, if you've not gone through the weight certification process through the NCAA, you're not a countable opponent. I know some NCWA teams do the OPC, too, but that's almost another level of granularity there I don't really want to explore on the fact I may state something incorrectly with some schools who compete there.

The NAIA has different rules: Any match against a non-varsity opponent or a school that isn't a four-year, degree seeking institution does not count (For them, it can count for their opponents).

Qualifying results that factor in are a different tangent of the rules.

Only other guy I can think of that would have been close since Yianni was Chaz tucker in 2020 he was 31-0 going into the canceled NCAA's and probably would have been the 1 seed so I think 35+ wins was in reach.

They actually did seed the 2020 tournament before it was cancelled. Tucker was the 3 seed.   Seabass 1 seed and Gross 2 seed.  Tucker would have likely has 6 seed DeSanto in the quarters.  i don’t see any scenario where Chaz wins 7 matches in that tournament  🤷🏻

He could have won first round then lost his R16 match to Ridge Lovett then wrestled back for 3rd from there that would give him 7

Ok so based on what JB said, Chance had 44 wins.

Yianni had 37 wins his true freshman year (even though wrestle stat shows 34 in his overall record for the year). The only match that did not count was against teammate Michael Venosa (who ironically went to my High School) early season and is listed as Spartan Combat as he was grey shirting.  So Yianni career record was 114-2 and his freshman year was 37-1.  His sophomore year he has 29 matches listed but one does now count (same deal with Spartan). Wrestle stat does show that correctly as 28-0 (with 29 matches listed).
So Yianni is shown as having 118 career bouts (116-2) but really he is 114-2.

Could..but the likelihood of that happening is slim. I say that not in that he could not have ever lost to Ridge- although at that  point in Ridge’s  career and stylistic wise, I very much like Tucker in that match.I say it from the standpoint of prior to that tournament,  there was no way I saw him placing top three despite being undefeated.   His best win that year came over 8 seed Montae Bridges (2x).  He wasn’t going to beat #1 Seabass, #2 Gross, #5 RBY, #6 DeSanto, maybe not even 4x Blood rounder #4 Micky Philliipi (25-1).

Unfortunately for damn Covid we will never know!! grrrrrrr

Still struggling to see where you are coming up with 37-1.  If one doesn’t count that makes 36-1.  Jason Bryant said NCWA (club) generally doesn’t count either.  Diakomihalis wrestled two matches against NCWA wrestlers.

Corey Shie wrestled for The US Military Academy Preparatory School (USMAPS) not the US Military Academy.  This is an NCWA club program.  Does not count.

Paul Brohan represented Farmingdale State College. This is a D3 SUNY school on Long Island.  They moved up to D3 about 25 years ago, but I don’t think they had wrestling as a varsity sport at all in that time.  Before that it was a two year school and competed in the NJCAA.  As a NJCAA institution wrestling was a varsity sport.  I don’t know when it was dropped… Jason Bryant’s  Dropped College Wrestling Programs database did not have the information.  The bottom line Brohan was more than likely a NCWA (club) competitor or an unattached/uncertified and this match also doesn’t count.

I think that means Diakomihalis was 34-1 officially.  Matches against Venosa, Brohan, and Shei do not count.

I did have a conversation with Cornell's SID about Yianni's record as they had them counted. The rationale they had was pretty interesting. If Yianni had lost to any of those non-countable wrestlers, then they thought the rankings folks would surely have dinged him for that loss (since it would have been a real bad L, countable or not), so they have it on Yianni's match record.

I mean, you can argue the logic, but it is what it is. We know Ohio State doesn't list Stieber's matches as an attached freshman before getting the medical hardship year.

It makes records in this sport sooooooo much fun.

I don't know who had the last 40 win season but Jonathan Ross from Lock Haven has to have the last 50 win season.

Wow. 50 wins is insane. What's the modern record?

With the new information Gabe Dean had 2 40 win season.  Brett Pfarr I think falls just short.  He was 40-4 in 2016, but one of those matches was against an unattached wrestler from Gateway International Bible Institute that probably doesn't count.  Similarly in 2014 Turtogtokh Luvsandorj was 41-9 but one match was against an NCWA opponent and another against an unattached wrestler that doesn't count.

There were two wrestlers withing striking distance of 40 wins going into the cancelled 2020 tournament.  Neal Richards was 37-7 going into NCAA plus a win over Foca that doesn't count.  He was the 11 seed and 3 wins would be about the expected number for that seed.  Kizhan Clarke was 36-7 going into NCAAs with an additional win over an unattached wrestler that probably doesn't count.  He was seeded 15th which would be expected to only give him two more wins, but the following year he would lose in the NCAA final. 40 was on the table, but less likely than Richards.

2018 Chance Marsteller 44-4
2016 Michael Hughes 40-10 (+1 match against unattached wrestler that doesn't count)
2015 Gabe Dean 41-2 (+1 match against unattached wrestler that doesn't count)
2015 Kevin Devoy 40-7
2014 Jeremy Johnson 42-5
2014 Nick Gwiazdowski 43-2 (+1 unattached match that doesn't count)
2014 Gabe Dean 42-3 (+1 unattached match that doesn't count)

Ross was a redshirt wrestling in all opens for those 50.  Scott Moore had 54 wins at PSU in 2003. Three PSU wrestlers had more than 40 wins that season.  Scott Moore 54, Mark Becks 43, Josh Moore 40.  Josh Moore was the last PSU wrestler to record 40 wins with 44 in 2004.

The most under Sanderson was 38 by Taylor and Ruth in 2011.

Not sure what the overall record is.
