They love to make huge cuts in Happy Valley.

Yeah despite being terrible at it. The PSU guys never seem to make it to the mat, guess cael pulls the plug if they're gonna be an eyesore, which i makes sense given the quality of their backups.

I don't know anything about that.  I just know that Retherford, DT, Brooks, and others have had to make some cuts which decidedly not "fun."

I'm thinking about cases like Facundo. Aside from Retherford I don't put any weight behind the above claims. Not that they don't cut weight but I doubt its anything beyond every other d1 room. I think the idea profits from the "fun" punchline. Its the inverse of all the idiot PSU fans who will tell you Mark Hall was really a 57 and stuff like that.

I'm a bit behind the loop. Was this weekend one of the events he had to wrestle at in order to qualify for the Japan Team Trials? Does this mean his international season is over?

No, he has another chance to make the team in June or July if he wins the Meiji cup.

He apparently needs special approval to compete there since he is missing this weekend, but I am sure he gets it

Kiyooka and Takahashi missed this stage last year and made the team

not wrestling this weekend anymore, kidney issues. Seems like he just can't make 57kg

Why 57 not an Olympic year. was he ducking  Suda or Higuchi? They both in the tourney?

He wants to get down in advance, I believe. Figure out if it's doable or if he has to target 65.

I think in Japan once you have established yourself at a weight and are medalling, it is pretty tough to lose your spot.

If you medal at an olympic weight in the year before the olympics you are automatically on the olympic team. It's huge for the olympic years but other than that they actually give zero advantage to returning medalists.

Didn’t Ono claim in the past that it was easy for him to make 57?  Too much processed American food?

I guess that's the way it was.  But I think that's why Spencer has lost his strength.

He's a tweener and I seem to remember him saying he could just as easily go 65 as he could 57. Maybe he's been holding his weight down a bit for the college season? You're probably right about the food though 🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦

This seems to happen more with 61 than any other weight at least recently. Vito, Ono, Abasghadzi were utterly dominant and seemed like p4p top guys in the world but just could not manage the cut or were far less effective up a weight.
