Carl prioritizes his NCAA athletes participating in offseason tournaments in styles that aren't even NCAA eligible. Maybe when he figures out the bigger picture then Penn State can test their mettle. Until then, every dual win is meaningless even if they win 8+ matches every time and potentially set the NCAA tournament scoring record... again.

66 meaningless dual wins in a row.  And when they break the D1 record for the longest winning streak later this year also meaningless.

Exactly. Maybe if they showed up as a team to the biggest college team tournament we could take them more seriously.

I’m a PSU fan and have to say watching these matches without their participation made this event more exciting.

I would have loved to see Penn State in the National Duals.  Now that the season has started, I can rationalize why there they skipped.   They had so many wrestlers at various worlds it would have been a quick transition to the college season.  It's one of the reasons they had no one at the NWCA All-Star Classic.   I hope Cael reconsiders for next year, if there is a next year.

Dispassionate Penn State grad and fan.

Sounds like Hawkeye fans egos are still reeling after last nights performance. Everything's meaningless since they didn't come to the National Duals. Makes total sense.

At least they aren't mad at Tom Ryan and the Buckeyes for that beating they got. 🤷🏿‍♂️

Upcoming duals for Penn State:

Most of the Paycoms including both Paycoms finalists.

After both of them are at the very least doubled up, people will still call them cowards.

Yes. Part of fandom. They can't see the forest thru the trees.

Penn State is on the verge of breaking the all time D 1 consecutive win streak. Should take that record later this season.

Carl doesn't want dual meets deciding the team champion in wrestling.   He will do whatever he can to downplay national duals.  It's just the way he is.

Donald Trump was elected President of the US - validating this statement.

Yeah, maybe that loser Sanderson will be able to figure out how to create a winning team, huh?

Of course it did. If PSU had shown up there would have been no suspense as to who'd win. Instead National Duals ended up being wild with Ohio State unexpectedly winning the whole shebang.

Can you imagine Tom and Terry, holding each other with tears running down their faces, in the Iowa locker room after the OSU beatdown?

Nobody has ever accused the USA of not having enough idiots!

I wish we had more, honestly.

You could replace that with any presidential candidate from the Red or Blue aside for MAYBE Mitt Romney and your statement would still be entirely accurate.

Carl, rightly, thinks of the NCAA tournament as the crown jewel of college wrestling. Cael has also identified that wrestlers get worn out over the course of the season and limits the number of matches his guys wrestle. Since he considers duals a "necessary evil" (probably too strong a statement) he doesn't partake in national duals. I think this is short-sighted. Yes, national duals is just basically fluffery over bragging rights (which the fans love anyway, of course), but PSU could still participate. Why doesn't PSU just send their backups? I'm sure we'd all love to see how PSU's bench matches up against other teams' starters.

Cael loves duals, he just doesn't think it is the best way to crown an NCAA Championship.

Lots of great wrestlers who are capable of winning a natty title would be left out while others would be only to see their team lose twice and their season would end.

The final bout of the year last year was KOT vs Dean "FlyingCement" Hamiti. The final bout at the recent Paycoms was a FF. `
