Rich people pay the most, by far during all of their working years.  The medicare tax is not capped.  Then they pay more in retirement due to the IRMAA brackets/surcharges.  So the rich already pay much more for Medicare than everyone else.  Cut benefits?  Sounds like denying healthcare to people based on income.  Sounds a violation of equal treatment under the law (14th Amendment) and Civil Rights Law if there is a disparate racial outcome.

Furthermore, where does "rich" begin?  If we just take all of the money and assets from billionaires and kill them (i.e. raise their taxes and cut their benefits to the maximum extent possible) it will not make more than a 90 day bump in the trajectory of all of our financial trends.  So, then what?  Keep redifining "rich" downward until it means "above average".  Where is your endgame here?  An unsustainable system remains unsustainable until the underlying structure and assumptions are recognized as such.  Playing with percentages and brackets and winner/losers never has worked very long and never will.

Bernie sanders before he was a millionaire

You can do both. Realistically, you have to. The whiny wingers constantly say cut spending but then don't want to cut any of the actually bloated big programs like military, Medicare and ss. Idiots.

When he wasn’t a millionaire he wanted them taxed.  When he was a millionaire he wanted billionaires taxed.

About the original assertion of this thread - RV posits that America is a crap country because 45 other countries and city-states have a long life expectancy than we do.   I countered with the opinion that geography and who pays when you get sniffles are less a determinant of longevity than your genes.  I have not done the math on proving or disproving my hypothesis yet but did come across this interesting article from about 15 years ago.  I hope my commenting brethren here find it interesting.

Summary:  America is not as bad at this healthcare gig as the Hate-America-Firsters think we are and we are the best at treating people diagnosed with cancer.  If we could just stop hitting each other with cars and bullets then our longevity would jump up quite a bit.

The place in the world that takes the most legal and illegal immigrants in the world can’t be the worst…..  unless you’re an angry hater.

I’ve said it before.  I’ll say it again.  If you say this is the worst country in the world.  If you say you hate it here.   If you say you’re ruled by someone you think is literal Hitler and you stay on purpose when you have the means to leave.   Something is wrong with you.

I found an article in The Lancet about a study supporting my assertion that hyphenated Americans live longer than their un-American genetic brethren.  This is a jargony long article and divides Americans into 10 categories (3 Black, 3 White, 2 Latino, 1 Asian, and 1 Indians& Eskimos).  If you look at our American Asians they live longer than the average of the Asian countries.  Remember to add India and Pakistan and Vietnam, etc. for the world non-American average.  No fair comparing our basket of pan-Asians only with the Japanese.  If you look at our American Africans you see they live much longer than the average of African Africans.  Surprisingly, our American Latinos outlive our American Europeans despite all of our racism and anti-brownness and rich jerks doing things like wanting to keep their own money and property.  Our American Europeans are about the same as their European counterparts taking into account the Eastern Euros are shorter lived than the Scandanavian Euros and we have boatloads (Get it?  See what I did there?) of slavics here.  And, all this great American longevity comes despite us not having universal health cost sharing.

Another interesting point.  The longevity difference country by country showed about 30 year difference highest to lowest.  Our 10 Americas have a difference of about 15 years mostly reflected in pulling the bottom up rather than pushing the top down.  Once again, WooHoo, America!

The article is long and horribly statistically jargony but the pretty graphs do a good job of making the points discernible.

Conclusion:  Non-Crap Country

Now, the little hidden horror in the original article:

The toxic sexist Matriarchy is killing men off globally!!!  Worldwide conspiracy.  Right there in plane sight - all those little old ladies (black widows, actually) looking all frail and helpless!

Agreed. We can do both, and we basically have to. Reducing spending only gets us so far.

Need to tax both the millionaires and billionaires to get there.

Let's do all three and tax the Bernies as well.  Actually four - everybody that says we should increase taxes should just voluntarily pay more.  Nothing is stopping you, 50% of the population will make a huge impact.  When the repubs see how well the dems voluntary tax increase is working they'll jump on board.

Alternative is continued increasing deficits. The gutless wingers whine about spending but then only want to cut programs that are already tiny. Don't touch the military, ss or Medicare. Idiots.

The government will spend 10x% of our taxes every year every time period.   No matter what you give them they will spend more.   There needs to be an end somewhere and neither party gives a shit because it’s someone’s else’s problem down the road.

politicians and politics sucks.    Term limits for all.

You wingers are stupid and hypocritical. You complain about the deficit (but only when dems are in power), but then you want taxes to drop while we continue to escalate military, Medicare and social security expenses. Only cut stuff that's already teeny tiny like npr, planned parenthood, usaid, etc.

Basically, you DO want deficits to continue to skyrocket.

Untrue generally.   Conservatives want deficits to go away by means of less spending.   You (and I do not count you in with other liberals in this case) want to lower deficits by cutting defense and raising taxes.    I believe I have that right.

Liberals in general on both sides of the aisle do not have an issue with deficits you are correct.  They want more spending and more taxes.   That's why neither party does much about deficits.

Millions of us complain about the deficit, taxes, and expenses regardless of who is in charge.

I'm not going back to read this entire thread so can someone tell me in a sentence or two what life expectancy has to do with quality of life?

You want less spending but don't want to cut any of the truly big programs like ss, military or Medicare. You actually want those to go up every year. Your math is garbage.

Lifespan and health span correlate strongly. Health is a big part of quality of life. If you can't see that, you're beyond help.

I have said on here many times that I'm for a 10 or 15% cut across the board.   Period.

That's what I want.
