Colbert's show was losing 40million a year.   CBS decided to kill it.   What is a business supposed to do with a losing project?   Keep it going just because they want to continue to lose money?   Is that the right thing to do?   If there were political reasons, they certainly don't outweigh the obvious and fully vetted financial reasons for the firing.   Is anyone here upset that Colbert was fired?   If so, did you watch on a regular basis?   Did  you find him funny?   Apparently, losing 50% of your market in a few years is a death wish for any media program.   Why should Colbert be different?

We need congressional hearings on why The Andy Griffith Show was discontinued.  Come on everyone loved Opey and he probably needs a job.

Hey, everything is on the table when the President tries to force an NFL team to change their mascot name to "Redskins." Truly bizarre times.

Didn’t watch his show but (off topic) he has one of the greatest quotes, or maybe I should say statements, I’ve ever heard. Will see if I can find it.

He wasn't fired. His contract expires in May and they told him they would not be renewing it and will cancel the show altogether at that point. He still has nine-ish months of shows to do.

It is hard to argue with losing money at that rate. And that is a late night show problem across the board, not just a Late Show problem. Between 2018 and 2024 ad revenue for these shows has dropped 50%. As a result a whole bunch of these shows have already been cancelled (Conan O'Brien, James Corden, and a few others I cannot remember).

All you say is true.   So why is Colbert so important that we need Congressional investigations?

Who says anyone is calling for Congressional hearings? Just Hurley. And he offers zero support for that claim. Take note that Hurley makes several statements in the opening paragraph that he backs up with links to related articles, but he has no link to his claim that Democrats are calling for hearings, and he names no specific politician. Hurley claims that Colbert is slanted (he is), but he appears even more slanted to Hurley because Hurley is just as slanted in the opposite direction.

Not one of those tweets is a call for Congressional hearings. And the Writers Guild of America is not a Democratic politician.

So, still no "Democratic politicians... calling for a Congressional investigation"

AI Overview

Democrats in Congress and other public figures have raised concerns and called for an investigation into the cancellation of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" by CBS
.

These calls for investigation stem from the timing of the cancellation, which occurred just days after Colbert publicly criticized CBS's parent company, Paramount, for settling a lawsuit with former President Donald Trump. The settlement involved Paramount paying Trump $16 million to resolve a lawsuit he filed over the editing of an interview on the CBS News program "60 Minutes".

Many believe that the cancellation of Colbert's show, a frequent critic of Trump, might be a politically motivated decision rather than a purely financial one, as CBS and Paramount have claimed.

For example, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts questioned the settlement's nature, calling it potentially "bribery" and calling for a federal investigation. Representative Pramila Jayapal of Washington has also stated that "People deserve to know if this is a politically motivated attack on free speech"

Warren called for an investigation.   Jayapal says the people deserve to know...    How will they know without an investigation?  Presumably, the admin won't go after CBS for this.   So it will be up to Congress to go after this.   How do they do that?   Holding hearings and investigating.  It's called deductive reasoning based on what is said and what is said means.

Art, Art, Art.

Tell me you are not becoming caviera and just blindly accepting an AI summary. Tell me you are not being taken in by AI's habit of taking two things one person said about two different, but related, subjects and claiming they are about a single subject. Tell me you know that the investigation Warren called for was related to the $16 million settlement over the 60 Minutes edit and not related to The Late Show's cancellation.

Dude, AI makes shiit up. It is what it does. It wants to answer, even when the answer is wrong. This is what is so insidious about it.

Against my better judgement I read some of the AI summary. And I instantly regretted it. At least you were honest enough to say it was an AI summary, unlike some others.

“CBS canceled Colbert’s show just THREE DAYS after Colbert called out CBS parent company Paramount for its $16M settlement with Trump — a deal that looks like bribery,” Warren wrote Thursday on social platform X. “America deserves to know if his show was canceled for political reasons.”

“If Paramount and CBS ended the Late Show for political reasons, the public deserves to know. And deserves better,” [Schiff] wrote.

Yes, I did read the AI and when I do, I quote it as such.  The Hill also reported on this.  How will they get America to know the reason for the cancellation of the show next spring?  An investigation is how.   That is how the math works out.  When a congress person is so concerned about a topic and says America deserves to know, they are talking about an investigation.   At least that is what it means to me.   If not to you, ok then.

Warren explicitly used the word investigation just days before in reference to Paramount's settlement with Trump so if she wanted an investigation of CBS's handling of The Late Show I am sure she would have used that word.
