When you have a phone that can find Iran very easily, why teach that in school.   This goes for basic math facts as well.   Many HS'ers are ignorant of basic math facts because we can do that stuff on a calculator  easily.   Schools say they want to teach critical thinking but how can you think critically if you don't know the basic facts with which to think critically with?  The schools are failing the kids.

This isn't a left or right issue.

This is we aren't teaching kids or even adults how to be aware of the world around us. As somebody who actually has a degree in geography, it's sad.
