Made a post in another thread and made me want to check something. Woods was outscored 34-6 in second periods between the open and trials. On the other hand, he outscored his opponents between those two events 61-3 in the first. We may have our very own American Musuakaev.

@Jon_Kozak being our resident international savant I was wondering if you think this method could be effective enough to win a medal internationally.

Zahid has been living this life for years and brought home a medal in 2023 while hooked up to an oxygen tank

And the Iranian gassed worse than Zahid did, if I recall.

He gassed super hard against Taz at the olympics too had the match in the bag.

Great observation and stat. Part of it imo is that Woods isn't a huge 65er, but also that he's trying to wrestle a more controlled match if he has a lead going into the second period, as he mentioned trying to get smarter in freestyle. Conditioning is rarely an issue for guys who have toughed it out in the Iowa wrestling room, and Woods didn't seem to have a gas tank problem at the Muhamet Malo tournament in February. A bigger concern might be progressing his style. It's just a matter of time before international guys scout his floppy level change and start countering it.

I think Woods is our best shot at a medal this year so I'm glad he made Final X. I don't think he beats Kiyooka, Mamedov, or Amouzad but I feel pretty good about him against anyone else in the world.

Prior to this year, Woods hadn't wrestled freestyle since 2019. So, it's pretty incredible he made Final X this year. It also might explain some of his problems closing out matches.

I agree 100% Amouzad at 67kg and 65kg seem to be very different animals at this point as well. I could definitely see him beating Uulu or someone on that caliber.

He has a formidable gut wrench.  That's how he beat Mendez.
