Looks like this is based on Sparks getting a medical for 2022, despite wrestling in 2 duals but also in the Scuffle in January

i don't believe Southern Scuffle was considered 2nd semester. it was Jan 1 schools are in then.

Ferrari, on the other hand, wrestled in duals in the second semester.

there is also a second criteria where you can't have participated in X % of teams official dates and it appears Sparks didn't, and AJ did.

Hope not. "Olympic Redshirt"? Did he even wrestle in the trials?

Tough wrestler but a third class dipshiz.

He didn’t attempt to qualify for the Olympics, in any sport, that year.

He earned the Olympic redshirt, regardless of whatever path he took (or didn't).  He can use it at his own discretion.

You, and everyone else, are allowed their opinions.  They (and you) are wrong, though.

You are correct on him being a dip$hlt, though.

He earned that too.

Pretty sure only medical is in question.  Can he get additional exemption for being trapped in a burning SUV?

Thanks for adding that “in any sport” part.  Wasn’t sure if maybe he tried to make the fencing team

2020-21 - won title as a true frosh for Ok. St; season doesn't count against his eligibility due to covid rules.

2021-22 - injury-shortened season. Unclear whether he gets a medical redshirt.

2022-23 - did not complete.

2023-24 - did not complete.

2024-25 - 3rd at NCAAs for Bakersfield.

How does the NCAA treat the 2 season he didn't compete? I thought the rule is your clock starts once you start wrestling and doesn't stop for breaks. Am I wrong about this? Or is the argument that those 2 yrs. off are his redshirt and Olympic redshirt yrs?

This is my understanding.  So the only question is whether he can get a medical for 2021-2022

By rule Ferrari does not qualify.

To get a hardship waiver for an injury:

  • The injury or illness occurs before the first contest or date of competition of the second half of the playing season. In wrestling the first date of competition of the second half is defined as the 10th competition date for the team. Ferrari was 10-0 with all of his 10 coming in dual meets, the last of which was January 23. This was the eleventh competition date for the team.
  • The injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than three contests or dates of competition or 30 percent of the maximum number of contests or dates of competition of the playing season. The maximum number for wrestling is defined as 17 and the 30% provision is defined as 6 in the rules. He is clearly over the 30% provision.

All that said, we have seen the NCAA lose a lot of court cases on eligibility issues, so who knows. But as the rule is written, he does not qualify for a medical redshirt, and he is not particularly close to the cut offs.

Sparks only used 4 competition dates in 2022. The last was the Southern Scuffle, which was Minnesota's 7th competition. Sparks was under 6 competition dates (30%) and before the first date of competition of the second half (11th date of competition).

For goodness sake. They were this close to letting a guy with no eligibility left compete in the post season. No offense to him, he’s nowhere as good as AJ. If AJ continues his good behavior streak while still garnering eyes/views he might get it. NCAA is a business, more than ever now
