Since everyone is apparently okay with using the term “Okie State,” I propose the following name changes. They are all equally lazy and childish as “Okie State.”

Penn State - Pennie State

Iowa - Hawkie

Iowa State - Hawkie Lite

North Carolina - Unkie

Virginia Tech - Hokie

Nebraska - Huskie

Pittsburgh - Pittie

Oklahoma - (had to make sure they still had a program) Soonie

NCState - Wolfie

I'll be the buzzkill... Grew up in Stillwater and still have a community of family and friends there... I literally never heard of "Okie State" until I joined this forum. "Okie" is a loaded term, the older generation still remembers it being a derogatory term. You can use it but you handle it with respect and know your audience. It's kind of like, I can punch my little brother but you cannot punch my little brother lol

 

"OSU" works always. "OKState" works in print (OKstate.edu is the college website and on various branding). "Oklahoma State" works always. It's not complicated.

 

I do love the wordplay though let's be honest. Too bad Okie has other connotations

c'mon bro. Ok-la-ho-ma state is too many syllables. That's why people shorten it to okie. Besides, it's endearing. 

I do like your list though. Change Penn State to penne alfredo and we've got something special

The only one of these that fits the same pattern would be Unkie, I kinda like that one hopefully it catches on.

Don’t people sometimes say “Nebby” though?

I guess you could change PSU using the same pattern but it wouldn’t be a very polite word

Oh god.

We have been through this, guys.

Repeatedly.

Even Ohio State calls themselves tOSU.  Google Ohio State University.

Then OSU (Oklahoma State) has the trump card that gives them the say so.

The school of The Ohio State University calls themselves The Ohio State University.  That is the trump card before the trump card.  Oklahoma State (OSU) has the most championships and champions in any sport - ever.

I remember a friend of my parents calling someone an Okie and then quickly clarifying to teenage me that it was not a polite thing to say. I’m sure it will lose that power over time but it’ll always have a little piece of that Dust Bowl era discrimination history with it.  

By itself it sounds endearing and charming. For the older generations though its laced with hatred and mistrust, like a big ‘ol FU.

So you're the guy when your co-worker says he wants to be called "Jacob" rather than "Jake" you still call him "Jake" aren't you?  The Ohio State University itself has coined and thrown out in to the world that they want to be called tOSU.  Who are you or I to challenge what the actual university has dictated and put out in to the universe as requested law?
