..it's surprising that the entire Flo Radio cast said it should go to Carter.  I know it can't have anything to do with bias from needing access and relationships to PSU and NLWC, so it really is a funny coincidence

to be fair, Carter is the most dominant guy in interviews

i remember mark hall turning into a bratty child instantly when someone asked him about the controversial head gear pull the only time he beat Valencia.

Hall beat Valencia again on 12/14/18 4-0 in the Penn State vs Arizona State duals

Voting for Carter is reasonable. He had a better bonus percentage than Hendrickson (and, of course, won an unprecedented fifth title).

I don’t know how many times this needs to be said, but the Hodge trophy is single season award not a lifetime achievement award.

In reality Hodge voting is subjective. If it were truly about dominance, as evidenced by bonus percentage, MM would have won.

Hendrickson had 3 falls.   Starrocci had 2 T falls and 1 MD.    I'm not sure how that equates to a better bonus percentage.

It's also not a "granted a 5th year because of a logistical anomaly" so he stayed to get paid award.  Starocci is an all time great, but this year did nothing to enhance that already established fact.

Only recently has that become the case.  Before the criteria changed in 2022 it includes "Past credentials" as a selection criteria.  I am sure some voters still go by that.

Didn't it also include an emphasis on pins and sportsmanship?

Pre 2022 criteria for the award was a wrestler’s record, number of pins, dominance on the mat, past credentials, quality of competition, sportsmanship/citizenship and heart.  Now it is record, dominance, bonus-point percentage, quality of competition and sportsmanship.  Pins are still considered as part of the bonus-point percentage criteria.  Sportsmanship is still there.  Citizenship and heart have been removed as criteria.

Well he did move up a weight and beat the returning champ who is also an absolute stud. So there's that.

He bashed all of us after the old mat forum went down despite being a former board participant.  He's the dork who made a few cool friends or just one (Ben Askren) and then pretended like he never played dungeons and dragons.  I'm sure @Jon_Kozak can concur

This is a weird thread.  Are you seriously saying the Flo crew preferred Starocci to suck up to PSU/NLWC, as opposed to that being their actual objective preference?  Based on what?  I don't buy it.

I have my issues with the Flo crew, mostly that they hold their punches and are afraid to criticize a program since they're fearful of losing access to film.  But that's an across-the-board problem, and doesn't come into play with the Hodge.

There's no track record of pro-PSU bias. The other school is OSU, and they have every reason to maintain good relations with OSU/Taylor.  It's not like Starocci is an unreasonable choice; in fact it's the right choice, IMO.  Pyles' tweet is also correct:  there's a reasonable argument to be made for both Carter and Wyatt.

I get that Pyles grates on people, but I don't think there's any reason to think their Hodge preferences weren't honestly held.

If he was the right choice he would have won.  He did not.  He should have thought about his sportsmanship and his public persona.   There is no need to cry over spilled milk.  The voting is over and they chose Wyatt.
