This board seems very split up on keeping Tom around or not. This deserves its own thread

The damage that has been caused is not repairable under this staff. Nationally we are becoming a joke at developing and it’s hurting us recruiting. Iowa and Penn state boards think it’s comical. The number one recruiting class ever tied for fifth place at ncaas( only bc steveson lost) with only one all American from that class, after being at the program for three years. Top overall recruit paddy 0-2, top 5 recruit kharchla 0-2, top 15 recruit Rotogotzke 0-2, Feldman got noticeably worst. Cannon got the best draw possible and didn’t place. So development is becoming a concern and people are taking notice.

Tom Ryan inability to adapt. Has got zero transfer portal guys while every other major program has got handfuls. If you can’t keep up with the times then it’s time to go. On top of that you lose one of your best kids to a team that doesn’t even need him. Rocco’s decesion was not financial. Why would Penn state offer a huge amount of money to Welsh? Ryder may be just as good as him. Rocco doesn’t bonus anyone and his best win is Ed Ruth who he is 1-2 against. Why in any world would Penn state unload a stack of cash for him? Mcennelly is the guy you go after if anyone. I don’t see him losing again honestly.

Tom is also getting a reputation as a crybaby. Every time something goes wrong or against them he immediately picks up the phone and gets the quickest interview to Flo. Transfer portal, nil, bad calls in matches, what originally happened with Rocco welsh. He has done interviews on all these things complaining about them. No other coach does that. Then he screamed at the Rutgers kid that he was a coward when he was clearly injured and defaulted out. Don’t get me started on how bad his brick throwing in matches has gotten either. Tom is becoming almost unhinged and a loose cannon.

Well if Tom leaves how do you know we can get a better coach? Easy answer it is one of the best paying jobs in all of wrestling. Number four exactly. The top three jobs aren’t opening up anytime soon. A job like this only comes around once every 10 years. Snyder, Burroughs, Dake, Lee. If any of these guys ever wanted to get into coaching this would be the biggest payday they could get for the foreseeable future. While a guy like Schwab has done great I think you need a youth movement to really attract the recruits like David Taylor did. Not to mention Ohio state has a world class facility.

So we have two choices put new life and energy into this program soon or let it slowly fizzle into a team that won’t be in the top 10 anymore. While our days of winning national titles are over with Ohio state can still be much more competitive with the right leadership.

EDIT: Now theres rumors of Feldman leaving too.

This is overly harsh. Tom Ryan is a great coach who has dealt with immense personal tragedy and handled it with grace.

He needs to go James he needs to go. Bring in some fresh blood and more lively asst. coaches.

that doesn't have anything to do with the productivity or progression of the team jimmy. those are his own problems outside of the sport.

If Ryan gets canned before Bono, I will riot.

The entire state of Wisconsin is putting out the best in-state talent EVER and he is the reason why they won't go there.

Bono HAS to go.  Does the AD not care about wrestling or what?

Tom Ryan is a good coach, but the times are changing and the buckeyes need to keep up if they wanna compete for national titles...I think there needs to be a coaching change.

You’re obsessed about that Rutgers match lol…. He’s not getting fired when he placed fifth this year and continually places in the top ten

You sure about that? Iowa coach Tom Brands is the same age as Tom Ryan and the Hawkeyes haven't exactly been killing it the past 4 years.  Gambling suspensions, injuries, underperformance.  Their best showing at NCAA in that time was 82.5 points which was only 55 off the champs. It would seem to me that Iowa fans/administration have been historically less patient than Ohio State's.

The worst was his challenge in a match they were winning, and the challenge resulted in losing points and eventually losing the match.  That might have been the most active negative I've ever seen from a coach in a wrestling match.  If he just skips work that day Cannon beats Fish.

Seroulsy doubt that AD's have the same rabid passion for details of AA placers and team standings.  A lot of other concerns and benchmarks for success about the program and its health and leadership.   I do not root for this program and am not particularly a fan of Ryan, but do not see that he must go.   He's had a lot of success and its a tough sport with ups and downs.

I would not have challenged had I been coach. My wrestler is up by 3 with a minute to go. My wrestler is not tired, there wrestler is. I don't want to give their wrestler a lung break. But to be honest I don't see how they took away 2 points away from Cannon. I really didn't think Ryan would win the challenge, I never thought he would lose 2.

It seems like Logan has done well with Mendez. Not sure about other lightweights (McCrone, Bouz, Cannon). Similar to Iowa, programs like tOSU really do need to build up their RTCs. Anyone who can convince a pair like Dake and Snyder to move their training grounds is going to benefit big time. However, inserting these guys directly into a major coaching role doesn't seem like the right move. Burroughs might be the exception.

Who should replace Tom Ryan? Who would do a better job than him? If Dake is in the market to be a head coach, then they should do it. All of the other recent medalists are not in the market to be a coach.

So please, tell me who ?

Well 4 of the confirmed 5 aren't even starters...so that's not necessarily a big deal.  But Feldman and Bouzakis would be.

Like six months ago people were saying what a great coach and mentor Ryan was after getting Sammy Sasso back on the mat. Then tOSU finishes in the top 5 (2nd behind the big 3) and a bunch of folks start freaking out. Fans need to take a deep breath.
