Didn't VT get screwed over by another school a few years back too?

I think you’re right, I just can’t remember what the heck it was

Agree but there’s a right way to do the recruiting process and committing and backing out isn’t it.

The coaches invested a ton of time in getting him to commit and likely passed on other recruits interested in VT.

This. Kind of a BS move when kids commit and flip like that. It's supposed to be a gentleman's agreement.

Not a gentleman’s agreement. It’s actually a signed contract. But not until you sign.

Right. I thought NLI wasn't a thing anymore though and that things are sort of up in the air with the whatever-will-replace-NIL agreement until the House Settlement is finalized.

I don’t know how NIL works, but NLI is the contract between schools and athletes that identifies specifics for the scholarship.

Thanks, as always, for the substantive addition, virgin.

It is truly mind boggling what's going on in Happy Valley. They literally just under-performed and set a new points record and then a few days later added an absolute hammer in Ono and a top recruit for 2026 while having what might be their best recruiting class ever in 2025.

As a VT fan and more importantly, the sport of college wrestling, this sucks.

Don’t verbal and then sell out to the highest bidder. That is disingenuous and not respectful to the program you verbally committed to.

shut up. if the kid can get paid, he deserves to get paid. don't be a sour grapes weirdo.

I just don't even know what to say at this point. I'm sad, disappointed, and find it hard to see any change on the horizon. I can't help but think that between NIL and the freedom of that transfer portal, the reason we all have loved college sports is gone. Commitment.. gone. Loyalty.. gone. Parity (even the little we once had in wrestling).. gone. It's similar to this past week in March Madness. Because of the poaching of athletes from mid-majors, this was the first time in 17 years that every single 1-4 seed won in the first round. March Madness has lost a significant part of the madness because with the freedom of the transfer portal and the NIL money, talent is constantly funneled into the stronger programs with more money to spend. Until we can find some form of regulations in college athletics, this is what we have to look forward to.

If you don’t see the problem that the kid created, not by getting “paid” but the manner in which he did it, then you are clueless and hopefully not procreating or raising or mentoring boys to be men.

so tired of this.  psu is the yankees of wrestling.

I'm not sure how someone who isn't from PA or lives in PA can be a fan of PSU.

Isn't a monopoly illegal? 🙂 Really where does he fit? They have world champs like Sealey as backups. Some of these guys have to transfer right? If so who? I was a PSU fan but no more now. This is not good.

I think kids should do what's best for them.  And I won't tell this kid what's best for him based on my rooting interests or what I think is best for college wrestling.

agreed.. coaches will flip and take a higher paying and better job so why not the athletes.

There was clearly tampering, but since tampering is legal now, it doesn't matter.  When the whole Vega/Cornell/OSU flareup happened, I mentioned that this was unethical.  I still think it is unethical, but I got a ton of pushback, and there is a good chance this comment will get some pushback as well.

As an NC State fan and booster, I am concerned about a couple of our guys in the off season.  I know it is different, but the same idea.  The Pack has already lost two guys who had verballed this year, but not nearly as good as James.

As a fellow ACC guy, I feel for you. (My wife was a Hokie)

To the people that believe he did not get "paid" and I would like to preface this buy saying more power to you get your money I just hate when people talk about Iowa paying guys, but PSU does not. The rumored figure for Bassett from V-tech was 2 million, this was after Jayden had Verbal'd, so he had whatever offer he was getting. I think it would be insane after v-tech did not land Bassett if they were aware that Jayden was being offered to not throw some of that Bassett money at him to try and keep him as he is the next best thing for the 2026 class. So, I would assume PSU at least came close to whatever figure they were willing to throw out.

I think you are safe with V rob he made a post about how NC state was the only team that wanted him to come visit. He seems like the type of guy that something like that means a lot to him.

Certainly sucks for VT but I feel like they still have a strong class coming in the next couple of years.....

Prior to this you could have certainly argued they had the best combined recruits for 2025/2026 either them or Okie state.

DT allegedly went hard after Ryan Burton last year, but we were able to hold onto him.
