I was looking at the new Selection Criteria Grid for this season and I noticed this addition:

Eligible Matches

Only results from nontraditional events that are registered in the NWCA Optimal Performance Calculator (OPC) system by September 1, and contested before January 1 of the respective academic year, shall be considered for selection and seeding for the Division I Wrestling Championships.

Additional Comments

This modification clarifies that the committee will not consider results from nontraditional matches that have become more common later in the season. This is consistent with the value the committee places on traditional formats, (dual meets, individual/dual advancement tournaments), and conference tournament participation to meet the selection criteria.

Iowa State created a tournament at the end of the season I thought that was for the benefit of inflating match counts for those in need.  If it's extra matches in question, that's not it, but that's what I thought was being alluded to.

Ok reading it closer I think you’re right.  But it says that a tournament is a “traditional match,” so seems like Last Chance Open is still legal?

Kinda sorta. But I'm cool with it. NCAA should update it's RPI to reflect reality, until then I'm okay with "last chance" tournaments.

The NCAA did update the criteria for what gets included in RPI.

A follow up question to this:  when considering At-Large NCAA bid after conference tourneys, when they consider win percentage, is that before or after the conf tourneys where most guys needing at large bids will take 2 more losses?

But isn’t it just saying the tournament needs to be on the schedule by 9/1?  So if Dresser just plans for a Last Chance Open every year he’d be fine?

It also says it needs to be completed by Jan 1.

What I am unsure about is who the registration requirement applies to, the event or the school attending the event. The notes from the meeting suggest the budgetary impact is that schools will not have the added expense of sending athletes to something that had not been budgeted or planned for. Since these last chance events are "pop up" events, I imagine they are not on anyone's schedule. This makes me think they are targeting the events through the schools' registration of schedules rather than the event being registered. But I may be reading too much into that unclear wording.
