Then clearly the biggest beneficiary of transfers is easily PSU if you go back far enough. They have 2 straight up NCAA champs that I know about that transferred in: MM and Kerk.

Are we just talking total points from transfers this year?  If so, it’s probably OK State (Hendrickson, Hamiti, Amine, Spratley, Jamison, Fish).

Mesenbrink is a straight up runner-up. But he appreciates your vote of confidence.

I did this at the start of the season detailing returning points and their source. Since it is returning I only detail this year's transfers (so no Kerkvliet, Mesenbrink, Caliendo, etc.). And no Ferrari since he has not scored in a few years.

I suppose Teemer+Buchanan+Caliendo could have a shot to top OK State if Teemer and Buchanan win and Caliendo gets 2nd

The teams with the biggest NIL pockets.

That team in college wrestling would be Ohio State or Michigan. Unfortunately for OSU they blew their wad on paying football players over a million bucks per year and they didn't hold anything back for the wrestling program!

Super heavy lift would be going back to 2018 (technically 2017) YOY when the portal began to settle this question once and for all.

Byproduct answer to the likely follow-up question would be 2021-present when NIL began.

Do it before Flo steals it though now that this is in the open

Funny you should mention that. I just started looking at it. I should have something this afternoon.

Except colleges don’t pay NIL $ to athletes.

Is there anyone still in college in D1 wrestling that would have entered college before the transfer portal existed?

I guess Iowa could argue they didn’t need the portal to get Teemer and Buchanan… (IIRC, Parco did actually go in the portal.  Sorry forgot him in my list of point scorers earlier)

Splitting hairs.  It’s anyone outside the college…. Which defo included alumni.   Small businesses…. Gas station owners….. if large companies are in the area maybe ads / commercials.  I think some sell shorts, shirts, or other merch etc.     there is a super cringy vid of the pinto doing like dead lifts and promo’ing steaks or something    Screeeeeeams nil to me at least

But a specifically  “schools” don’t pay the nil.  When folks say xyz has a lot of nil $$ that’s not really factual.   In theory the quality of the grads and how much $$ they make prolly factors into things.  Having a wealthy wrestling fan in your ecosystem is very relevant.

OK. Let's crowd source this thing, Intermat posters.

I have a list of 86 wrestlers who have qualified for the NCAA tournament for at least two schools between 2014 and 2024.

That does NOT include wrestlers in a couple categories:

  1. Transferred before wrestling for the first school. I know about Kerkvliet but who else qualifies?
  2. Transferred after redshirting at first school. I know about Mesenbrink, but who else qualifies?
  3. Did not qualify for the NCAA tournament at the first school. I got nobody. Help fill in the blanks.

Edit: Bonus points if you can name the three wrestlers who qualified for three different teams during that time.

Thanks for Spratley and Jamison.

Parco and Buchanan have not yet qualified for Iowa.

What exactly are we trying to find out here?  As you alluded to the list won’t be relevant to this season because it wouldn’t include anyone that is in their first season at a new school

This is the list of wrestlers from 2014 - 2024 who have NCAA qualified for more than one school (plus Kerkvliet, Mesenbrink, Spratley, and Jamison) aggregated by school with the points they took with they when they left, and the points they scored after they arrived. For the three three timers their points at school two go into the in and out column.

image.thumb.png.3cea1466980b217ee04662f1436c41c4.png

  • Stanford has paid the heaviest price, losing 12 wrestlers and 90.5 points without gaining any wrestlers.
  • Northwestern is not far behind with -8 and -64.5.
  • On the flip side are the usual suspects, Iowa has brought in 10 wrestlers who have scored +116.5 points for them while losing 0 NCAA tournament qualifying wrestlers. Both those numbers will change significantly this year with all the ins and outs.
  • Speaking of a school that will see significant changes, Arizona State has been a big beneficiary of the transfer portal, right up until they were not. They have gained +74 net points and 6 wrestlers.
  • Penn State is number 2 on the gains list with one wrestler, Greg Kerkvliet contributing 69 of their net +96.5 points gained.
  • Michigan is number 3 with 7 gained and 1 lost for +74.5 net points gained.

I already did the returning points that shows you the effect of this year's transfers on the schools losing wrestlers. We wont know the impact for those gaining the wrestlers until mid March. So there is no sense including this year with past years due to the incomplete data for this year.

It will not be relevant to this year.

We're finding out which teams have benefited the most through use of the transfer portal through the 2024 season, and it can be updated to include through 2025 after NCAAs results are determined.
