PortaJohn Posted January 23 Posted January 23 (edited) Our annual National Dual debate is upon us! Glad to see that some things never change. If given the choice would you rather be a One Time NCAA All American Wrestler or a 4 time Team Champ Edited January 23 by PortaJohn I Don't Agree With What I Posted
Voice of the Quakers Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Team titles seem to be dominated by streaks - earning one often could be as "easy" as walking on to the right team. Individually, every AA has to earn it the hard way. 2 1 1 Dan McDonald, Penn '93 danmc167@yahoo.com

666 Posted January 23 Posted January 23 I've never been on a championship team, I'd go for 4 team titles.
PencilNeck Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Are you kidding me? One individual national title versus one team title might be a more interest question. Even though tournament scoring is not always the best yardstick (as discussed on other threads), Wrestling is absolutely as much (maybe even more so) a team sport as an individual one. While even just getting on the podium at NCAAs is a huge accomplishment, and one that teammates should be proud of, I'd imagine sharing a team championship with the guys you wrestled with for four (or five) years would be a bigger deal. Another question that i think might be more interesting could be a team conference title versus individual AA honor. Again, the team success would be an easy choice for many. Might depend on your past experiences with being a part of successful teams though.
JimmyCinnabon Posted January 24 Posted January 24 4 Team titles. Let everyone else carry my ass to a ring.
Dogbone Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Do you contribute to the team title at all or are you a starter who was either a non qualifier or went 0-2?

D3 for LU Posted January 24 Posted January 24 (edited) As much as I like to be on a winning team... wrestling is (truly) an individual sport. I'll take being an AA one time... even if it's EIGHTH PLACE, over being on a National Championship team 4 times... (How would you play it, when you meet up w/ a hot girl at a bar, knowing you didn't start AT ALL in your four years on those teams? Hmmmmmmm... ) D3 Edited January 24 by D3 for LU Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Caveira Posted January 24 Posted January 24 I know the spirit of the poll. But what are the odds a 4x starter is a 0 time NCAA all American? In today’s day and age they would have been recruited over. I like the idea of the poll though.

I forgot to add one piece of detail. On a team that wins 4 natties in a row. With a starter on said team not an AA. Apologies. I think the pure math is ~0.6405 but I don’t think the math factors in they should be getting better over time Edited January 24 by Caveira 1

No, several starters. I was just saying in this hypothetical anyone of us could have been the starter at 125 for PSU and won four team titles. It just might have taken an amputation or two to make the weight.

A transfer. Penn State trails Ohio State and Iowa for transfers brought in from 2014 - 2024. Iowa is second now, but will be top of the heap after counting this season. This narrative that only PSU recruits over, or even does it the most, is incorrect. Edited January 24 by Wrestleknownothing Drowning in data, but thirsting for knowledge

And he is proud his school won the dual state title while he was there…. And didn’t start that year.

You comparing survey results from a wrestling board where prolly 83% don’t fit either category to vote ? I.e. how many on here were on a champ d1 team and or vs a AA? same guy I’m talking about wrestled for a top 1/2/3 d1 wrestling school. He didn’t start there either. I just am too lazy to see if they won a d1 title that year. I am 83% sure they did but didn’t want to reference this…. Hint they won a crap ton of titles.

To be fair, how many NFL fans take pride when their team wins despite having literally no direct involvement with the teams success. Of course if you wrestle at a school, your are going to be happy and proud to be involved. You spend time with these people every day and grow strong bonds through the grind of a wrestling season. It's interesting to me that some people would choose to be a weak spot in a championship line-up rather than earn the title of D1 All-American. Every time I look at a wrestler's profile and it mentions, "member of 3 high school state championship teams," my first thought is "oof, they had to bring in team success to fluff up the resume."

I voted AA brother. is this another thread to gain support for a national dual championship? I dunno. as to my comment. It’s just a dude I know. I was just called bizarre for saying there are humans who would dare to want the other side.

I just need to go on the record and say I can't make 125, *maybe* 141 if I avoid eating a sleeve of Oreos like I did an hour ago.
