I really believe he is the most talented wrestler in college right now. I think his brain both physically and mentally seems to be the only thing holding him back. I watched the Ed Scott match 4 or 5 times he scored 4 takedowns with 4 different attacks and made them all look relatively effortless. Not entirely sure what the purpose of this thread is I guess to say hes my pick to win NCAA's and I just hope he is able to stay healthy.

The takedown which I referenced in the "Fastest TD ever" thread was his third.

Do you realize what a large caveat this is?

are you eluding to the fact that his brain must be large given he goes to cornell?

He's a special talent.  No doubt about that.

From the outside looking in it's hard to determine the cause of his occasional lapses.  At times I've thought recurring concussions, which is obviously scary and impossible to predict.  At other times it's seemed like he's healthy but collapses mentally when things aren't going his way.  Hard to say.

He's a guy that could bonus his way through the NCAA tournament on the right weekend, and those don't come around too often.

I believe nobody scored more bonus points in the NCAA tournament in 2024 than did Shapiro.

Correct. Three way tie for first between Shapiro, Ty Watters, and Keegan O'Toole on 7.5 bonus points.

I kept rewatching that to try and see what was the secret sauce.  Part of it is his insane quickness, but I think there is something there in the setups as well

which one seems mysterious to you?

I thought he had at least two go-behinds against Ed Scott.  The one that @BigRedFan had posted where he started on bottom, escaped and then went right into the go-behind was the one I was talking about.  It made Scott look like a fool (which I don't think he is)

I suspect that on the one I posted, Scott might have thought Shapiro was going one direction and Shapiro went the other, so perhaps Scott turned into Shapiro's go-behind.  That's the only way I can think he managed to get behind him so quickly.

Shapiro has one of the best ankle pick takedowns, and he didn't try to use it. I just hope he has foregone the upper body TDs and keeps his feet firmly planted on the ground.

If you were looking for commentary, the main things I notice about that one were that it was a full committed misdirection, meaning he wasn't chain wrestling or every really interested in the left side of Scott's body. I say that because you can see his right hand lands palm down, and also because you can see his right knee is already aimed across the body, meaning he knew where he wanted to end up.

So to expand on what I said, he's going all out to get an all out reaction, but he's already set his body up to change directions, producing the goofy affect from scott. Hope thats not obvious I'm sure most of the people on here have a handle on technque.

Cornell wrestling posted a video of his takedowns.  The one in question is the third one, and shows what hammerlock3 says and what I suspected:  misdirection and speed.  This video may disappear within 24 hours.

Who did he lose to last year at NCAA? Would be fun to see him and teemer go at it

It was Cardenas from Stanford in a 5-4 match. He got revenge in the consolation finals when Shapiro beat him 10-4 for third place.  Cardenas is redshirting this year for some weird reason.

Weird reason? Do you think he’s considering a fifth year at Stanford on an athletic scholarship? I know I’d take that opportunity in a heartbeat!

Could be that absolutely.  Could also be financial if he sees himself getting his Stanford degree with another year left of eligibility for the highest bidder.  Could also be health related even if not a true medical redshirt.  Saying weird reason from me was the wrong way of me phrasing it.  I was noting that it was an unexpected outcome, but the reasoning may actually be sound.

That was my thought. Do the Woods and Griffith move.. get your Stanford degree and go wrestle 1 year as a mercenary and make some money.

Not a bad way to start life - a Stanford undergrad degree - a graduate degree from another school, a couple hundred thousand in the bank, and all American wrestler on your resume.
