Question: What team and what year had the most individual National Champs and did NOT win the team title?

Oklahoma was close in 1982.  They had three individual champions and a runner-up.  "Dr. Death" Steve Williams lost in the heavyweight title match to Bruce Baumgardner 4 - 2.  The Schultz brothers and Andre Metzger claimed titles for the Sooners.  However, the Sooners finished 3rd in the team standings that year behind Iowa and Iowa State.

Cornell in 2012 had three NCAA champions (Dake, Simaz, Bozak) and finished 4th.

Yes.  By 14.5 points.    Maybe it’s why they recruited over two of their starters who underperformed at NCAAs that year?   One lost to the 33 seed in the round of 12 no ?

Penn State seems to be almost locked in to a four year rinse and repeat cycle since 2010-11:

4 championships in a row (starting 2010-11)

Then "punt" (6th)

4 championships in a row (starting 2015-16)

Then "punt" ... sort of (2nd)

3 championships in a row (starting 2021-22)

.... and likely the 4th championship this season (2024-25)

Technically Berge did lose to Wyatt Sheets in the round of 12, famously the "34th seed", but Berge had to MFF the match (got a concussion in the quarters if I remember correctly).

when marianelli mff out of the tourney lots of people said that he underperformed…..    I dunno if that applies to psu does it?

That was when strategic recruiting, scholarships, and having said recruits pan out mattered. Now if someone doesn't look like a high AA threat, they can just bring in someone who is, whether that be a transfer or recruit.

And very, very, hard to say they punted in 2021 when they had 4 NCAA champs and started the best option on their roster at every weight. 

It just looks odd now to see PSU with "weak" weights because this was before NIL and the transfer portal which has eliminated that issue by and large for the Nits.

Clarion '73 had 3. I could joke that they didn't even make top 10!. Correct statement but only because they weren't in the University division and score didn't count. But not joking- they would have been 3rd IIRC. Iowa State had 2 and 4 other placers for 85. Oregon State had 1 and 4 placing 2nd with 72.5. Doing it in my head, I believe Clarion had ~67. Next was Michigan at 59.5.

the Sooners also had a 3rd placer and a 4th placer that year. great team.

They definitely punted in 2015 when Ohio St won their title. 2021 they took their shot, Iowa won. There was no punt there in my eyes.
As far as weak weights, it’s relative. The weights, 141 and 285, are weak relative to the rest of PSUs team, not nationally. Davis and Mirasola would likely start for 70 of the roughly 80 D1 teams and both should hopefully flirt with low AA (5th-8th)/blood round status at NCAAs this year. Lots of teams would love that level of weakness. And I’m entirely confident in 6wks when Davis is finally in match shape and gets Bailey again at Big Tens that result is reversed. That Iowa dual happened a month later or the 141 situation settled out a month earlier…that dual is a shut out.
