Greco is the most popular international style

I suspect in the most populous countries especially India and China neither FS or GR is widely popular.

I have read that even in Russia wrestling is a niche sport and wrestlers are mostly unknown except in the Caucus regions.

I bet the national participation in the USA is the highest in the world.  I would further bet it is the highest by a good margin.  We just push athletic participation at a much higher rate than most large nations.

This one's far from scientific and is based solely on events I've announced since 2015. I have a pronunciation spreadsheet that has 3,019 unique names in it. There could be a small degree of duplication due to some names being with a middle name or a common misspelling like when translated (like Ukraine, Belarus), so I was curious how long my list was by style.

On the men's side, I have 1,188 names registered to MFS. I have 1,015 registered to GR.

So I've got more unique MFS names than I do GR names. Could mean there's less volatility in the entries on the Greco side, but if anything, it's just another number that I've got in my records.

Insert catchy tagline here.

Sounds like definitive proof MFS is more popular.

Admitting I have a problem is the first step...

I thought getting far too intoxicated was the first step, following by a deep consumption of eleven to twelve pounds of well marbled Delmonico?

I am failing to see any issue at all.

What could possibly be wrong or go wrong, some folks are just silly.

I prefer a great cabernet w/ my rare to medium rare steak, myself.

Back to the topic at hand... don't you think this talk about greco/freestyle and what's more popular internationally, would be better suited for the likes of Bugs & Daffy arguing over it?

(Picture Bugs for Greco vs Daffy for Freestyle... )

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Using participation numbers at the highest level tournaments in the world is not a good metric for how “popular” a sport is worldwide.

How many are attempting to qualify? How many kids participate?

How was the fan attendance for Greco vs freestyle at the Olympics?

Its anecdotal, but I was encouraged to wrestle Greco at Fargo despite not being interested simply because it was “easier to qualify”.

1. No data available.
2. No data available.
3. Every session sold out for every style. Doesn’t mean there weren’t empty seats but ticket availability was scarce across the board.

Insert catchy tagline here.

Unscientific, but in the lead-up to the Olympics the UWW had a poll up on its website asking which style people were most excited to see. Greco had an overwhelming # of votes, close to 70%, more than MFS and WW combined. Dunno what the final results were, but I do recall that the vote count was not trivial (n well into the hundreds or thousands).

Greco did have one of the biggest story lines of the 2024 games - Lopez winning a 5th gold.  This may have influenced the poll.

Kudos to you for your professionalism and effort here.  Getting the name pronunciation right is no easy feat.  I expect it gets easier with practice but early on I also expect it was pretty tough.
