Anyone else enjoy Tom Ryan ripping Pyles a new one on FRL today?

I really like Christian I do think he fence sits way too much and think hes a bit preferential to the big two programs but hes media so I can't exactly hate on him for that. It just seemed like a very odd topic to take a stance on with Tom Ryan.

trying to stay contructive but yeah he drives me nuts. They start talking about portal stuff and his first move, which is very much anti-college wrestling, is to start playing down the idea that coaches are actually cheating or being unethical, then he walks it back by saying the obvious "but sometimes people cheat", and it takes 5 minutes to get those nothing ideas out....

Cliff notes version please

Essentially Pyles tweeted that all the top teams are involved in the portal. Someone replied and said not tOSU. Pyles said that's wrong. Tom Ryan took that as Pyles saying tOSU is doing shady things and basically called Pyles out for it.

Wasn't Joey McKenna a portal guy?

His point is the NIL era is significantly different than the era when they had to recruit utilizing the 9.9 scholarships allocated, which all of his transfers came in during that time, including McKenna. McKenna took over a portion of that 9.9, whereas the recruits now can simply be given a bag of cash from boosters. They haven't picked up a portal guy in the NIL era where the 9.9 essentially becomes unlimited if you have the funds. Pyles was comparing apples and oranges. I did think it was a good discussion though.

Looks like he transferred in 2017, portal began in 2018.

Yep.

Ah. Makes sense. TOSU still would have NIL in full force too, though.

It was a good discussion overall, but seemed contradictory at times and they were kinda arguing past each other and repeating what they said on x/twitter.  They were both partly wrong.  I was expecting them to apologize to each other but they were kinda still making the 2 different arguments on the show.

The original story is Ryan got mad because he thought Pyles was equating “going after transfers” with NIL/portal.  Pyles technically never said NIL, but the original post he was replying to talked about Michigan “buying” guys (probably why on FRL Ryan said something about “go read the original tweet”).  Advantage Ryan.

However Ryan followed up by saying “your post said McKenna & Tate were in NIL era,” which it didn’t.  Advantage Pyle.

On the show Ryan did acknowledge they go after guys in the portal, and that any team should, but for the most part denied that they reach out to any guys not in the portal, but made a point to say that wasn’t against the rules as long as it wasn’t a coach.

Here was most of the original convo:

how about the fact that at no time in this boring interview no one bothered pointing out that the portal in itself is a bad thing.

I listened to this just now, and disagree with the representation in this thread.  Ryan was being weaselly and assigning statements to Pyles that Pyles never said.  There might be some merit to a discussion as to the value of Pyles' original statement that ruffled Ryan's feathers, but on the points of discussion here, Pyles was right, Ryan was wrong.

I think Pyles did ask something about this but Ryan demurred.  Also, Pyles gave him the opportunity to make clear his vague allusions to other programs and how they handle it vs. Ohio States "beliefs."

i'd summarize as: Pyles said nothing, Ryan took the opportunity to posture as morally superior (inspired by dresser no doubt), and then they took the chance to sit around and not talk about it.

I agree, Ryan claims the moral high ground, and maybe he can, but he also admitted that he lost out in the battle for Mesenbrink so he was trying and his argument sounds like sour grapes.  The transfer portal and  NIL has changed the landscape, we could argue if that is good or bad, but to me the bigger question is, maybe he's just not as good at the NIL/transfer portal as other coaches/programs.  His saying there needs to be an asterisk next to PSU points record adds to the feeling he is struggling with accepting he just isn't as good at this new way of doing things.  He kept preaching about culture. "We are not going to compromise our culture." Good for you, but you may then need to know, in this day and age, you may not do as well as other teams.

Ryan has some serious michael scott vibes...mixed with mike pence and the guy james woods played in casino.

Why is the portal a bad thing?  The portal in itself is a good thing IMO, it’s only when it’s combined with the current iteration of NIL that it becomes “bad.”  NIL as it was intended is not bad, but it’s mostly become “collectives” paying guys to go to certain schools, which is pretty much the opposite of what NIL is supposed to be.  I do think Ryan was basically saying NIL in its current form is bad, because it means you have to pay specific guys to get them to stay (not really based on their NIL) and that money could have otherwise went to support the program as a whole.

It is interesting to hear Tom Ryan say (for the millionth time) that Gable had no clue who he was when he went from Syracuse to Iowa.  That was not my understanding.  My high school teammate wrestled at Syracuse with Ryan and he called the transfer probably two years before it happened.  At the time, I did not believe him... but it ended up being true.

Ryan did assign statements to Pyles that he never said later on (which I mentioned in my post as well), but the original post that Pyle responded to was talking about Michigan “buying”guys. I think it’s reasonable to assume the overall conversation was implying recent years. However, it was odd to me that Ryan would go out of his way to say they haven’t had any transfers in the portal error (while he was on vacation even), when he acknowledged they’ve gone after portal guys they just haven’t succeeded in getting them.

I took it the same way. Pyles likes to twist arguments and toe the line so that he's technically not wrong, while making provocative / bold statements online for engagement. Ryan was wrong about his statement that "McKenna and Tate were NIL era" but the rest of his stuff seemed factual. I think his main point is that Pyles tweeting that Ohio State is going after these guys could stir up rumors in the room (oh shit, did he go after Cardenas too?) and degrade his culture. Overall, kind of a nothing-burger from both sides.

Just because Ohio State hasn't landed a portal guy during NIL doesn't mean they are using the NIL to land recruits. Their big three they landed two years ago were helped by NIL. Ohio State has a massive NIL collective and one of the strongest athletic programs from top to bottom. They choose to use their NIL for incoming freshman instead of transfers so far, but don't think they wouldn't use it on a top transfer in a spot they need.
