PSU at Iowa Predictions Thread

Recommended Posts

Starting in 2021 on TheMat, I started accumulating predictions for the Iowa v PSU dual. While this year looks a bit less interesting than the prior three years given the disparity between the teams and Iowa's latest result, I wanted to see if there is interest in tracking this again this year.

If so, post your predictions here and I will assemble them alongside predictions from Go Iowa Awesome and Happy Valley Insider to come up with a wisdom of the crowds consensus pick as I have done in the past. As always there will be valuable prizes after the results are known.

@Barracuda141 already got things started with his predictions in another thread on Thursday. Though since we all have more information since then, feel free to update your picks at any time up until mid-afternoon Friday.

I will go next:

125: Ayala Dec over Davis 3-0 Iowa
133: Nagao Dec over Schriever 3-3
141: Bartlett Dec over Woods 3-6 PSU
149: Kasak Dec over Rathjen 3-9 PSU
157: Haines Dec over Franek 3-12 PSU
165: Mesenbrink Dec over Caliendo 3-15 PSU
174: Starocci MD over Kennedy 3-19 PSU
184: Truax TF over Riggins 3-24 PSU
197: Brooks MD over Glazier 3-28 PSU
285: Kerkvliet Pinfall over Hill 3-34 PSU

I am very uncomfortable with that final score. I just do not see Iowa getting beaten that bad, but here I am. I expect Iowa to go with the 2023 Nelson Brands / any year Will Lewan strategy of committing to center control, hand fighting, blocking, relying on the CHA crowd to call for stalling on PSU before they get off the bus, and hoping to get to ride outs and win 2-1 with +1 second of RT. If they can then a number of matches could go either way. Certainly 133-165 qualify.

125
Davis, PSU over Ayala, Iowa via Decision
PSU 3-0

133
Nagao, PSU over Teske, Iowa via Decision
PSU 6-0

141
Woods, Iowa over Evans, PSU via Major
PSU 6-4

149
Voinovich, Iowa over Kasak, Penn State via Decision
Iowa 7-6

157
Franek, Iowa over Haines, Penn State via Decision
Iowa 10-6

165
Caliendo, Iowa over Mesenbrink, Penn State via Decision
Iowa 13-6

174
Sta(l)rocci, Penn State over Arnold, Iowa via Decision
Iowa 13-9

Both teams get a deduction here... IT IS LOOOOUD!!
Iowa 12-8

184
Truax, Penn State over Kennedy, Iowa via Decision
Iowa 12-11

197
Brooks, Penn State over Glazier, Iowa via Tech
Penn State 16-12

285
Kerkvliet, Penn State over Kueter, Iowa via Pinfellery
Penn State 22-12

I think there will be a little gamesmanship, some odd coaching decisions, and an all-around badass dual atmosphere... add in that I think Iowa will wrestle with a chip on their shoulders and this is going to be a fun dual.

I would actually expect otherwise and that Penn State absolutely blasts them to the tune of what @Wrestleknownothing predicts above... that said, I want to have a little fun inside Carver...

I also fully expect Arnold go go, FWIW.  That would put Kennedy at 184, unless Arnold goes 184.  I think Arnold wants a bite of Sta(l)rocci, though.

In the end Brooks destroys Glazier and Kerkvliet destroys Kueter.

I’m calling it early. Iowa gets blanked.

You're actually calling it late.  A lot of folks have been calling for it since Friday's beatdown at the hands of Michigan.

Welp..I'm going to do it..

Davis dec 3-0

Nagao dec 6-0

Bartlett dec 9-0

Kasak dec 12-0

Haines dec 15-0

Messenbrink MD 19-0

Star MD 23-0

Truax dec 26-0

Brooks MD 30-0

Kerk MD 34-0

I'm sure Iowa will get one or two, but I'm not predicting it.  IMO there are pickems at 125, 141, 149 and 157..but based on what Ive seen, I give PSU slight edges in each

I called it in the Michigan thread aswell. I may actually have been the first to call it.

If I were to lobotomize myself and go full homer, I'd pick a 5-5 split with decisions only and with 125, 141, 149, 157, and 165 going Iowa's way. Iowa gets the criteria win.

More realistically, I think 3 wins would be good and 4 would be great. Iowa gives up bonus at heavyweight and most likely at 174 but I believe Glazier and Arnold (at 184) keep their losses to decisions.

You're crazy.  Better chance Messenbrink bonuses than losing to Caliendo.  He'll break him mid way through the 2nd period

I gave three to Iowa, but I can see any or all of those results go the other way. Iowa is almost assured to show better than they did against Michigan, but it won't be close to enough.

I'll agree with others who suggest that we see back-ups in this dual. I think a lot of us would love to see Arnold out there, but I don't think T&T will put him out against Starocci

I have lobotomized MrPB in, but I do not have enough info from realistic MrPB to enter.

I think we might see a few backups wrestle, particularly on PSU’s side.

As a single travel date (and assuming PSU does not use their one time exemption) they get to bring 3 extra. Do you think we get all 3 wrestling? If so, who is most likely?

Quite a few pickem matches

125, 133 (Nagao is the slight favorite), 141 edge Iowa, 149 (Kasak could get Carvered), maybe 157 but I doubt it & 184 (if Arnold goes)...Iowa matches up well against the Nits

I doubt it.

I was screaming it at my television after Lemley destroyed Woods.  I am a bit slow to the plate, too.
