I know as a fan, we want to see more matches and especially the marquee matches that we rarely see anymore until the Conference Championships or the NCAA'S.  Looking at it though, it is hard to argue with Penn State and Cael's success.  It definitely looks like the other top teams are following the same strategy also.  Most duals do not feature the top match ups when they are suppose to.

I've been a long time PSU fan and season ticket holder,  my only pet peeve is often guys enter the post season with 10-15 matches under their belt heading into B10s.  Most of them pick up a bunch of matches in March  They may get a half dozen matches in early season tournaments, Clarion, Black Knight and Journeyman etc  as well as 6-8 duals.    Rarely do you see a guy with 30 matches at the end of the year. Cael averaged 39 matches a year when he wrestled.    Mesenbrink has 9 matches this year so far and is the pace setter for the nits.

Lock Haven on the other hand always has guys that have wrestled over 40 matches every year.  Marstellor wrestled 79 matches his two years there.   LHU's 174lb Conner Eck has 25 matches already .

the same thing is happening in the NBA

the NFL typically rests starters in prep for the playoffs

i bet you see it more in college eventually, since they added the 12th game a few decades ago and now we are going to have actual playoffs (i wonder if conf champ games disappear)

nothing new, it just took us awhile to realize we dont always have to be tough guys

Why bother having a season? Just do one tournament in March. Tongue in cheek of course but it’s also the direction things are going.

exactly. there is a technical reason that the team title needs to be decided in a dual, that being that there is no other way to make the season matter at all.

people are beginning to realize that wrestling(and other sports) to provide other peoples entertainment and for those same peoples egos isn't really worth it, when it comes to their long term health

It is one of the reasons why football is so popular. Every single game matters.

It's just funky. Two extreme examples. Clay Carlson has no matches and is ranked #7. Chris Cannon has zero wins and one loss and is also ranked #7. Why should those guys wrestle any matches this year when they could duck everything and go into NCAAs seeded in the top ten?

Captain America - no matches ranked #2.

Some say the season is too long,  But the majority of the wrestling is taking place in February and March.

um..... so if the majority is Feb/Mar then why start in October? I think the point you made without trying is that the season is too long.

No, College wrestling is a business.  It's not a revenue sport for all schools, But for some it definately is.  the early season matches are just as important as Feb and March.

Is there a reason why you are on a wrestling board?  I imagine its because you lo ve wrestling.

You think fan bases would stick around if the season was shorter?.  The early season gives us a better lay of the land. (See Crookham).

Also,  say you are a #1 seed and lose in your conference tournament and don't place,  would there be enough criteria to guarantee a wild card if you have very few matches ( your conference schedule essentially) or havent wrestled the best competition?

Can you name those schools along with their revenue and expenses?

Do they?   Here is a report from Iowa.   If they’re not making $$$ I doubt many / any are

Not the point.  College wrestling is a product.  As a fan I would like to see wrestlers compete.  Some say the season is too long,  But the majority of the wrestling is taking place in February and March.   Fix only has 1 match.  Did he dodge Crookham?  Wrestlers need to wrestle.

To us the spectator it is a product.  To the wrestler it is about end of season performance.  Coaches and wrestlers are not the least bit concerned what we want.  Load management is the new norm especially at PSU.

The college season is way too long.  The only athletes who compete in a sport as brutal as wrestling with similar frequency are muay thai fighters, and they are  done and dusted largely within their early 20’s.

Also, the standard within most D1 programs is that if you are good, you should be competing internationally as well, even during the season.  That’s insane.

Folkstyle wrestling is great, but the season is waaaaay too long.  It effectively stretches from September through to March, for D1 guys it effectively never stops.  You either wrestle everyday until you graduate, or your body breaks.

Even at the D3 level “unofficial” practice 5-7 days a week starts as soon as school opens, and you’re flat out through NCAA’s.  Coaches are learning that it doesn’t pay to tell most wrestlers to be practice room heroes, it makes a big difference to be salty but fresh, and enthusiasm stays way way higher for different parts of the year because, if your coach tells you we have 4 major events this year instead of “NCAA champ or your soul is worthless!” like in the old days, it develops a better wrestler, a happier person and a healthier human being.

So maybe you are saying Uetake is still the GOAT and the SFOAT.   🤔
